My brothers first girlfriends father had part of this exact real to real tape but I had never heard the entire roast. This is awesome I have been looking for this since 1972. Thank you 😊

😂😂😂 I was also surprised that the 8-track had such good sound! According to what Johnny said, Don Rickles was married three years when this was recorded, which would make it 1967, so I have to confirm the year somewhere, but it sounds about right. Glad you enjoyed it!

Rickles was a legend. And a fanboy. He giggled every time his peers acknowledged him. You could tell he just loved being a part of it. If you watch any of the Dean Martin celebrity roasts you'll see what I mean.

Almost equal was if he has a beautiful head like Don's he would get it circumcised.

@@fonso1030 He was the one who said that following Shelley Berman's hit albums Inside SB, & Outside SB he was looking forward to "Up SB! (Shelley thought it was someone else, maybe Rickles, but I set him straight since I actually have a recording of it...)

@@kenlieck7756 jack E was fantastic. And Joe E Lewis stated that same joke on his album “It is now Post Time” from 1961. They don’t make comics like that anymore

@@fonso1030 Ah, you're right, it was Joe E and not Jack E -- I get the similar names reversed sometimes. Would've loved to have seen them in person, but between RU-vid and their old LPs being easily obtained for peanuts, I can have the next best thing. I consider myself very lucky to have seen Bob Newhart work "blue" in the 90s, had long phone conversations with him, Soupy Sales and Stan Freberg, and worked & played with the intense and amazing Shelley Berman in the 80s (my girlfriend, otoh, got to hang with Jerry Lewis and Elvis as a perk of being childhood besties with Donna Butterworth). Oh, and back on the subject of "dirty" humor, Shelley, being a friend of Lenny Bruce, had nothing against comics dropping the F-bomb as long as it was funny and not just a crutch, although he himself had no use for it and sadly felt that the modern boozy comedy club atmosphere in general was not one he could comfortably work in -- though we did pop down to the Austin Laff Stop unannounced once, where he treated the fortunate patrons to a short surprise set which went over just fine.

Carson tells you when it takes place, 1968. He mentions that Rickles was married 3 years ago, and since Rickles was married in '65, that puts it in 1968.

This was actually the standard for roasts, even in the 50s, the public just never heard it.

@@cryptsubKay Armen was an Armenian American singer of the 40s and 50s and a fairly popular celebrity. She played a lot of nightclubs and Don was known for dating all the singers he worked with at the start of his career.
