Nanci's lovely version of this Bob Dylan song. Nanci Griffith - Vocals and Guitar Jerry Douglas - Dobro Donald Shaw - Piano Accordion Danny Thompson - Double Bass Tommy Hayes - Percussion
I read where Nancy asked Dylan's permission to cover the song, and Dylan asked to hear it and sent it back with the harmonica part dubbed in and his blessings
I was grounded in folk play 6 silver strings and mandolin was lucky saw Nancy live once was 1st ever knew of her stole the show loved the music love it still she had impeccable delivery on the songs. PRINE in prime need I say more
The band gathered around her is the 'house band' of the amazing tv series 'Transatlantic Sessions' featuring the best of artists from both sides of the Atlantic. Just search youtube 'Transatlantic Sessions' 😊
Her haunting voice has moved on to the next life at a too early time. One of the great songs from the Transatlantic Sessions. Jerry Douglas’s dobro adds so much. The rest of the players are also so good
Nanci is one of our true musical treasures.......her songs, her voice, her storytelling, just awesome. This version of Bob Dylan's song is priceless. Love her!
The fact that it was written by a man gave it a lot of its original power. Remember the man was the one left behind. Who else was writing songs like that back then.
The 303 Bob Dylan fans who gave this the thumbs down can rest assured that Bob thinks they are ridiculous. Rest easy Nanci. You were a true gem. X And every songle person involved in this performance is as good as any musican will ever be.
There’s a good video with Jerry Douglas and Molly Tuttle i’m glad I’m old enough to remember when this album came out had it on cassette in my car for years
one thing we've got in common, is that we're all different. her voice is so piercing and true. i think danny on bass really carries this track. exquisite
Just one of the precious gems from the much missed transatlantic sessions broadcast on the UK BBC4 between 1996 and 2012. How I miss these. Today's pop garbage is a poor poor substitute. Nancy you are the sweetest singer I have ever heard.
Nanci Griffith has been keeping me sane since...forever. In chemotherapy a quarter century ago, her music lulled me to sleep every night (on a disc-man--remember those?) in the hospital. When I got home, as the months of chemo ground on, preparing to go to her concert (at Wolf Trap, Virginia) kept me moving ahead. And I went to that concert. I was so thankful to be there (with my boyfriend -- he is my husband now), that I sat in my seat, and wept. Tears of gratitude and joy. Thanks for posting--this is one of my very favorites.
PASSING OF A LEGEND The great, beautiful soul that was Nanci Griffith has flown into the eternal. I fell in love with her when I first saw this video back in 1987. I loved the fragile grace of her voice. I have loved her music ever since. Like many artists, I didn't share her political views (she was very left wing), but she was passionate and articulate with her beliefs. I have no problem with someone's political views (right or left) if they ground them in philosophy, ethics and faith. She was incensed at those who would take advantage of others -- regardless of the reason. She was sometimes filled with righteous anger and still her grace and love for her fellow man bled through in her face and in her words. Rest in peace Ms. Griffith. your music, your spirit will be missed. And yes, there IS a light beyond these woods Ms. Griffith.
When US citizen ‘s says someone is «far left», to the rest of the world this means they’re In center of the political spectre. But we can agree that Nanci was a great artist. My favourite song by Nanci has to be Trouble In The Fields , witch makes me cry much to easily. I am not sure how big she was commercially , but I for one will miss her !
I've been listening to Nanci Griffith since before I could walk, and have always loved her music. As a kid, this was my least favorite of her songs...I found it boring and didn't understand it. But now as an adult, I relate to every word of this song on such a deep level. I can't listen without crying. And now, I see this as her best song.
I'm sad to say I've only just discovered Nanci via a duet with John Prine. Wow, what a loss they both are, I'm so glad I've discovered her music albeit rather late. RIP
Godspeed, Nanci. I saw her in Austin, then in San Francisco, then in Austin again. An absolute American icon and a real genre- melder. Cannot believe she has left us.
Dylan may be great, but this is the best version of this song out there! No other has the combination of Nancy's voice and Jerry's dobro, either one of which I will seek to listen to by itself. Together is just gold, IMO.
I love Jerry Douglas dobro playing, and yes, Ms Griffith is classic in folk genre. I have to say that I prefer Mandolin Orange doing their cover though....IMO :)
I do love Nanci and her song stylings. And I think Jerry Douglas is absolutely wonderful! I love everything he does. But when I heard Mandolin Orange do this song, they took it to a new level for me. Just have a listen.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iOHkyZ62jjQ.html
I remember her on austin city limits when she was a skinny young gun with a guitar and voice to match. Thank you Nanci for the joy you have provided all of us who love your music and your spirit. Folk rock on baby!!!
Don't feel bad, John. I was brought upright by a souvenir seller in Bar Harbor about 20 years ago who, when I asked, "who's that on the in-house?" She answered with a sneer Nanci Griffith of course. I bought whatever she had on hand and have never looked back. She rarely tours in our area but I was able to catch her on the Vietnam LP tour in South Fl - I'm a vet and it meant a lot to me.
I do like Nanci's version, but I have to say I think Dylan has the gruffness and emotion the song requires. And that's unusual as Nanci usually has emotion in spades - so please don't jump down my throat!
The muisc world and the world in general lost a little piece of its soul when Nanci passed. She was a gentle voice in a world of too many bombastic or narcissist individuals. Yes, she will be missed. "And acquired taste"? Perhaps, but once you have embarced it, it haunts you and comforts you. . .Rest in Peace, gentle songbird.
I've been a music fan for over 60 years, and I can not believe I'd never heard of Nanci until recently. She is FANTASTIC -- I now have over a dozen of her albums, from her first to her newest.
This is chillingly good. The song's brilliance is in its simplicity and Nanci nails it in this version. Also, perfect accompaniment by Jerry Douglas (et al).
Pros, yikes. I got addicted to her fair summer evening for years, still great, from a cassette from another guy who was addicted to it for years before that. This is terrific.
So sad she left us. She represented such purity, innocents and the good simpler times in America that sadly are harder to find and unfortunately rare these days. RIP Sweet Angel
RIP Nanci Griffith. Heard her the first time at Bob Dylan's 30th anniversary celebration in 1992, singing this song. My favorite version. This...my second favorite.
Bob Dylan got coveted Nobel Prize. Love the song and much more the artists, presentation and thanks Nanci such a miracle making it flawlessly through to end!
WOW......what awesome performance by Nanci......Jerry Douglas [worlds best Dobro picker] knocks it out of the park with his fantastic performance picking in the back ground......
Joe U said exactly how I felt..what a darling little face and such innocence to her tone..I've learned to play the fingerpicking.. It's the very same as " Girl from the North Country" only latter is played a bit faster..Viva Dylan!....it would be great to hear what Dylan thinks of her interpretation. But something tells me he ain't sayin'....I love much of his lyrics and instrumental work, but that privacy stuff seems like a " man of mystery " affectation. ( I hate that term " cover" what the hell does that mean anyway?" No offence to you..it seems its just a word not quite as true as " interpretation, " ) Ciao Paolo
I'm 37, so I'm still part of a generation that appreciates real music. Though this artist was way before my time, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to her while I was flipping through the channels and I ended up on a local PBS type channel broadcasted to Brooklyn New York. The channel had a similar look to channel 13's broadcast. The name of the show was, "Music City Roots!" I believe they were playing out of Nashville Tennessee that night at a cafe / bar / Club called the Loveless Cafe. If you have a moment, Google the show on RU-vid and you will see tons and tons of artists you are most likely not familiar with. The music leans towards indie-country and indie Bluegrass and a traditional sound as well. Many artist sounds a little bit like Alison Krauss, but each one has their own definitive and unique look. I have absolutely fallen in love with her songs! I'm so glad I stumbled upon her you older guys we're fortunate enough to experience the real deal music era. I only caught it on the tail end and I enjoyed it! Have a great day and please comment if you've seen the show, #musiccityroots . Her other grade song is called, on the radio! The only version of it though that I like from her is the one that is on Music City Roots but of course that is subjective so please check all variations out. Have a great day. Dave.
Danny Thompson's amazing , warm and strong bass give wonderful structure to this lovely song performed by all of these fine performers . George Lewis, Sr
Sublime. The whole production of this perfectly summed up as ‘less is more’. Perfectly measured genius if Gerry Douglas and simple shadow of percussion and a wisp of accordian allowing the delightful uniqueness of Nancy….aaah sooooo endlessly endless beauty.. I’m a 76 yr old Aussie…
Sensational. .. tone and pace...spot on...and the way she says Barcelona with her Texas twang....jasus love Nancy Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for the memories,.....
A most appealing voice. A refreshing uniqueness... alluring so much so that despite wanting to move onto others in this genre, I could not stop listening to her sing this song to the end.
