This songs comforts me. My daughter was killed in a traffic accident almost 3 years ago (April, 2017). As a mother I kept asking over and over "where is she?" I am learning to let the mystery be--and return to this song over and over as needed.
Your comment has added such depth to this performance of this special song. I already loved it, and for many years. Now it brings me tears. My heart goes out to you.
Your wisdom- foisted on you to find it maybe by the greatest tragedy, and I'm so sorry- it's admirable and I won't forget it. I realised today that we each have a threshold, beyond which are the stars, and we discover alone where that is.
I am currently watching The leftovers. I know very few people are watching it and feel sad about it. This show is such a masterpiece and deserve a good exposure.
I mean it was on HBO and got 3 seasons. The common person wasn’t watching it but common television watchers made Big Bang Theory and Two & a Half Men the top shows in the country. Ratings don’t mean shit.
I am! I've been listening to it on other platforms and had no idea it was a live recording. I'm listening to "Our Town" with Emmylou Harris backing and it's also insanely good. The musicianship in this session is just incredible.
Yes Natalie, the sound engineer that laid down this track with these artists, deserves more than a Grammy. I've watched / listened to this in high-def on Spotify and I can say with certainty it may be the most profound recording I've ever heard in my 50+ years of being an audiophile. Even more impressive is he accomplished it in someone's home, not in studio !!
@@bjfishermusic Stunned, amazed, overwhelmed by the experience. I know exactly what you mean. Jay, Russ, Molly, Donal, and Iris, and the sound engineer are in my audio Hall of Fame, and if this tune didn't grab a Grammy, then the Grammy's don't know what real music is.
I hate to sound like a troll but the main point behind everyone disappearing was that they ended up in alternate universe in which the other part of the population was not present, so no one really disappeared....
I'm an atheist and I also enjoy some gospel music. It's very inspiring and meant to promote feelings of spirituality so it succeeds there. It's a great feeling.
I grew up watching Iris sing along with her family members at our small Pentecostal church in Norwalk, California back in the late 1960's, so I take special pride in the work she's done over the years. I think this song is my favorite.
Little did she know, 23 years later this would become the theme song of the most somber, depressing, thought-provoking, and amazing show on television. Funny how things work.
Season 2 and 3 were less depressing than Season 1. Season 3 is a riot. Laughs for days. A Frenchman submariner uses the power of yoga to launch a nuke at a South Pacific island because he thinks a demon egg resides there. International Assassin remix is funny "We fucked up with Nora", ya think?
I find Dark, The Wire and True Detective to be more depressing and somber. S2 though was one of the best seasons of any show, that's for sure. But it wasn't nearly as somber and bleak as S1. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of the intro credits as well
Iris deserves much more fame than she has, once you discover the purity of that voice, the beauty of her songwriting, the beautiful simple folk picking. Just blissful stuff.
It's very possible Iris never wanted "much more fame" - the compromises that seem obligatory in achieving fame and fortune seem inimicable to her in my opinion. I would posit she deserves exactly the level of fame and fortune she wishes, whatever that might be.
Just a simple singer of folk songs. A voice right out of the bones of the nation. She sounds like she could have sang in the time of the Dust Bowl. Wonderful bit of Americana here.
Oh yes, this is what I seem to Know :) The NDE's -some of which just cannot be doubted, are enough evidence that there is something. But if not (if a 'scientist' thinks that is merely 'the lack of oxygen', when what about those when were actually dead for a while and came back!? Many 'Scientists' are not really rational, but support their materialist viewpoint quite irrationally! But, failing that, we have our own being to delve into... I think we all know it unconsciously, I would wager... But it may be deeply buried..! Some of my own evidence, and I am no 'New ager', or Buddhist/Hindu, is that past lives have come tome when I was working on current problems... I was not and still don't seek them out! And it is almost also like it is 'not me' as well! But like the song suggests, it is still good to keep an open mind and let people believe what they want to :)@@loriosterweil982
I remember the first time I ever heard this song. I was driving down I-95 near White Marsh MD listening to Prairie Home Companion when she started singing the song. I literally pulled over and stopped my vehicle so I could listen to the song. I was FLOORED to put it mildly! The purity of her voice combined with the earnestness of her songwriting is something to behold. Even now, whenever I listen to this song it sends a shiver down my spine.
I discovered this song five minuites ago. Miss my parents often these days. I think I'm going to listen to this song very often. Because who knows if and where they all are. She's so upbeat about it.
+James Thompson True shit. I've been watching this show from day one. And I'm still as confused as the assholes in the show! How about last night's episode huh? I think we got a hint at what's going on!
This is my comfort song. I put on headphones so I can hear the full body of the instruments. I love the violin sounds ahhhh. I don't know why it makes me feel so much better. I think just let the mystery be.
Hello 👋 Marie. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Everybody's wonderin' what and where they they all came from Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go When the whole thing's done But no one knows for certain And so it's all the same to me I think I'll just let the mystery be Some say once you're gone you're gone forever And some say you're gonna come back Some say you rest in the arms of the Saviour If in sinful ways you lack Some say that they're comin' back in a garden Bunch of carrots and little sweet peas I think I'll just let the mystery be Everybody's wonderin' what and where they they all came from Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go When the whole thing's done But no one knows for certain And so it's all the same to me I think I'll just let the mystery be Some say they're goin' to a place called Glory And I ain't saying it ain't a fact But I've heard that I'm on the road to purgatory And I don't like the sound of that I believe in love and I live my life accordingly But I choose to let the mystery be Everybody is wondering what and where they they all came from Everybody is worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go When the whole thing's done But no one knows for certain And so it's all the same to me I think I'll just let the mystery be I think I'll just let the mystery be
I normally hate this kind of music, but I actually play this intro for The Leftovers every episode. It's so bizarre how this was written before the show ever aired but fits so perfectly.
77 years old, a singer myself (classical and opera), a bluegrass fan for decades...and I only just heard of Iris Dement . Caught her on the soundtrack of True Grit. Never before had a voice pierce right past every filter of musical experience into my heart. What a gift! Her song, her voice, her soul...wow!
Thought I'd tell you're not alone. I too am in my 70's and playing and still performing mostly Bluegrass and this week is my first exposure to Iris. She and Nancy Griffith("Love at the Five and Dime"), voices are very close. Now I have two favorites to listen too. Yes, I'd love to do a performance with Iris. :)
I'm glad to see there are more of us who don't find the certainty in traditional answers to big questions, and just let the mystery be, thanks Iris and friends
daniel M, I'm sorry you were abused as a child such that you cannot discern music from white noise. I guess all of those slaps around the ears have left a permanent impression.
I love Iris Dement so much!! She's my hero. I've been a fan since I was like 9 years old, and I screamed when I heard her song as the leftovers theme song.
+Vincent Rubino That is so 'effin awesome. Isn't it great when others discover talent you have been hooked on for years? It's great to share brilliance.
I'm so proud of Iris for unapologetically representing Appalachian culture. It means so much to me to look back at this and take some pride. Im about to leave home and everytime im surrounded by yankees i play iris. Hearing her accent can bring me to tears. I miss my family.
@@lynnbaker6331 she clearly borrows our culture and represents it well imo. Her manner of singing is appalachian. I'm glad she was inspired and adopted it.
I know it's been 2 years since your post, but you are wrong. listening to this song for 1000 times would take over 46 hours. You could listen to it about 514 times a day.
I swear that I enjoy watching Iris sing just as much as I enjoy hearing her, and that is a lot. She's adorable! And what a fantastic crew of musicians that she is working with here......
From the Transatlantic Sessions with Jay Ungar, Aly Bain, Russ Barenberg and many others in Scotland many years ago - check them out, Iris did several sessions with them - all to be obtained on youtube . . . I still hope!!!!
I respect your sentiments. Truly I do. But it’s not fair comparing her to Bob Dylan. There is no one that surpasses Bob Dylan when it comes to folk singing..But you are correct she is right at the top with the best; Iris and Greg.No that would be a whistle stop tour!
I love this song too. It makes me laugh, especially since I was raised Catholic. It reminds me of a saying from the Tao Te Ching: The wise man points at the moon and the fools stare at my finger. This song is on my list for my funeral, which is hopefully a long time from now :)
Hello 👋 Cate. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
This was my observation exactly. The expressions of each musician is blissful content and satisfaction with what they were doing at that exact moment. Total serene satisfaction 100% with they were laying down in this session, and their love of the art
This version of "Let The Mystery Be" was the opening theme music for some episodes of the 2014 mini-series "The Leftovers". I had never hear the song before, so I searched for it on RU-vid. I love the song because it reinforces my belief that life and death are mysteries which may or may not ever be solved.
Let's not push our beliefs on others. She nailed it again with her wonderful song writing. After all it is really a mystery. Maybe we all will see our loved ones again.
All of these artists are the best at their game. And yet we see they are in awe of Iris. Especially, Jay Ungar seems to be playing a layer of love on this song. The year of this video, Iris was the musician you should have seen and experienced. Her shows were visceral and raw, emotive and unparalleled...Etched on the memory eternal.
Came here because of The Leftovers. The opening to the show with the missing people is so emotional especially with this song added. Wonderful show, wonderful song, and here delivered with so much personality. Love that the band is just enjoying playing together and having a good time, like a Saturday night party.
Quite simply, without hyperbole, this is my favorite and the most emotionally compelling video on RU-vid. When Iris was in this phase of her career, she was intense, vulnerable, unbelievably powerful; and even unhappy, nervous and disturbed. She would sit in her dressing room alone for 30 minutes after a show, composing herself. She's the only artist I ever saw that made grizzled bikers blubber :) What a genius!
Five years ago I commented on this song. I guess no body read it. That's sad for us all. I still have hope regardless. Never the less here we are even worse off. God help us. Five years from now I pray for better times. Until then...stay strong and do the right thing.
Well, I just read this one. I only discovered this song about 18 months ago, and it is now my #2 song on RU-vid. If you don't mind, please consider reposting the original comment, or what you can recall of it. I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about it.
Evil is all around us now...WE WILL BE THE VICTORS................God is in control not the Democrat Party and RINOS lol MAGA PATRIOTS RISE UP AND UNITE WITH GOD
Never heard this song before but since watching the Leftovers I really like it! It's great how Tv shows can introduce you to songs that you would not normally listen to

This is one of the most profound wonderful songs ever written. I love her voice and all the stringed instruments ! Props to Natalie Merchant for mentioning this song in the 90's which put it on my radar.
Well that was just sublime! You think the ladies in this video ever think about "equality"? They live it when they perform, and they love those talented men. Return to sanity, America!
You and me brother. The College Station crowd should be right up your alley. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e0iXfnyAZhs.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2GK462XnRjQ.html 😉
This song & Iris Dement is just pure comfort. Lost my daughter 17 years ago --- she had just turned 21 days before ---- Have learned to let the mystery of life & death just be ---
@@Harriet1822 Thank you. 2023 has been a bad & sad year. Feel her loss so much & hope we see each other in another time & place. This song is a beautiful, gentle hymn.
