I finished the Bootstrap Custom Dress Form! While the first half of the dress form instructions are fairly easy and make a lot of sense, I have to say that the second half definitely does not. Hopefully, this video will really help to clarify what every step means, or at least, what I did on every step. Overall, I think I am happy with the Bootstrap form, but it's definitely not an exact copy of me, and my form will still need a few tweaks to get there.

I know I'm late to this but just thought any future viewers might want to know about the seam you were talking about. It's called the Flat-felled seam. A flat-felled seam is an extremely strong closed seam that is often used for items like jeans. Love you @LadyRebecca and your videos are AWESOME!

I just made my Bootstrap form. The interfacing is important, it keeps the stretch factor to a minimum and stiffens the fabric a bit so Its not so squishy. I’m very happy with mine and it is very similar to my measurements. My clothes fit it well.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Was the bust on yours in the correct place, too? Because although the overstuffing probably is due to not interfacing the fabric on mine, that definitely wasn't what caused the bust to be so low. I'm glad yours turned out great!

I made a boot strap dress form about 5 years ago and absolutely adore her. Mine is called "Anne-Marie" after two ladies that lost their heads (Anne Bolyn and Marie Antoinette). However, I have now lost 11kg (24lb) in weight with, hopefully, more weight loss to follow. Instead of making a new dummy before reaching my goal weight, what I am in the process of doing is following a hack that I saw over on "My Bucolic Life" where you make a skin tight princess line dress for your self with a long centre back zip and place the dress over the dummy to bring it to the correct shape. I am using an extremely heavy weight denim which I have had sitting around for a long time and sewing it with strong thread. Once that dress fits me like a second skin I will place it over Anne-Marie and zip it up to force her into my current measurements. I have had great success with Anne-Marie and cannot praise the dress form highly enough. I hope you have been getting lots of use from your form.

Cutting cardboard.... I shook my head and rolled my eyes when Hubs bought a "cardboard cutting knife" off Amazon....a whole $8 bucks wasted.....or so I thought. Man, that thing cuts like butter through any thickness of cardboard! Used it for the dress form pieces and am SOLD! Just thought I would put it out there for any future cardboard cutting needs with patterns.

I've been sewing for more years than I want to admit (let's just say I'm well past the half-century mark) and I have to compliment you on your costumes; they are exquisite. I made a Bootstrap custom form a couple of years ago and I love it. I used similar fabric to yours and it worked out very well. The bust on mine turned out a little too big and somewhat low, plus the under bust was a little big as well. So-o-o-o, I rechecked my measurements, got out one of my handy-dandy upholstery needles and some heavy thread. I marked the form on either side of the bust seams on the front beginning a couple of inches below the bust to just under the bust point. The lines began close together and became wider on the underside of the bust then narrowed again at the bust point. I then hand stitched a ladder stitch from the bottom up, pulling the stitches together as I went and voila! My bust line was higher and the under bust measurement matched mine - problem solved. And as far as the stand is concerned, I saw something (don't remember where) that some clever girl had bought and used a wheeled IV stand for her dressform. I thought that was quite a good idea so I spent around $35.00 for one on Amazon. You have to do a little finagling to "fatten" up the top of the pole where it goes into the form (quilt batting wrapped around it works well) but it makes it SO easy to move around the room without having to hold both the pole and the form. AND, the pole height is adjustable! Win-Win!

I stuffed a set of fake people and fiber fill made them way to squishy. However, using 'cabbage' made them heavy - very heavy - but that worked for the show. Perhaps a combination would make the form stable, but squishy enough? Just ruminating. I have been looking at the bootstrap pattern for a while and it is an entrancing idea. :)

I am the person who wrote you saying I ended up with an extra pattern piece when sewing the Bootstrap pattern and I am glad that you had the same issue! The instructions don't say to use both of those pieces. I'm glad I wasn't going crazy not understanding what was happening. Thank you for the extra tips so as I go along, I can refer to your video for help. The Halloween projects look great and I'm looking forward to seeing how they come together. The trip to the garden was amazing. I could be in there wandering around for hours. I noticed the gloves you were wearing. Do you remember where you got them, or do you have any idea how I could find them online? You are quickly becoming my fav costuber. You are so open and down to earth in your presentation and believe I am seeing the real you. It's like dropping by to see a friend who happens to be sewing a project during the visit. Thank you for that.

Yeah, it's so weird how it seems like it totally ignores those pieces in the instructions! As for the gloves, they are actually vintage gloves, which I found probably at an antique store, or possibly an estate sale (I can't remember). For a while, I just bought vintage gloves anytime I found ones that fit (so now I have a bunch to rotate through). And thank you so much for your kind words -- it means a lot! :)

That's a really intriguing method! And I chose the plus size form. To be honest, I'm not sure what the difference is, since they're custom patterns, so I found it a little weird they had both!

box cutter or sheet rock knife or linoleum knife. You could use an indoor flag pole stand ( maybe at office supply or local hardware) and a wooden curtain rod. or for the base use a 12 inch long 2x10 and attach a 6 inch 2x6 (both laying flat) if and drill a hole for your wooden pole (if the fit is good, use wood glue and glue it into your base.

@@LadyRebeccaFashions yes, I know. It will fit like skin. I made the stretch bootstrap version for padding an existing mannequin and it needed many changes to really fit me despite custom measurements. A couple of suggestions : put wheels on the base to make moving her easier. Though that would affect the height. And maybe sew in the side seams a bit to adjust her to your measurements. Unless you leave them as is to account for ease.

Love your plans for the daisy halloween costume and strawberry dress. Can't wait to see that. I am really not keen on the Bootstrap body double. Looks like its going to be something you are going to have to keep fiddling with to make it work. I have an older dress form from the 1980s that use to fit me once upon a very long time ago. I recently pulled it from the attic, expanded it to the max and now, I am padding the outside with sheets of fiber fill to match my stout figure measurements. I also used an old bra to establish a bust size and placement that is now firmly pinned into place. Once I get this done, I am going to cover her over in a heavy weight muslin. She should look very similar to your bootstrap form in the end. This is the current project on my board. LoL. Thank you and all the rest of the CoCoVid people for welcoming me into your homes and sewing projects. I have learned so much from all in this costuming community. This is super helpful. I think for some of the projects I'd like to try a dress form would be really helpful and I've been eyeing bootstrap.. I'm not sure it would work better than the duct tape and t-shirt method so info about the process to avoid frustration would definitely be helpful.

I felt the bust was a little low on mine too. I also stuffed the form quite a bit tighter to my amount of body squish. I used a Pvc pipe for mine and built the bottom stand with PVC as well because my wooden one was just too wobbly. The wider pipes together turn, but not nearly as much as you form moved about. My next one will have the adjustments made to the bust area and I think it will be all good. I also want to make some adjustments to the neck so that I can insert a wig head in the top so my dress form will have a head that can be put in and taken off. I also want to work some arm tops in the shoulders to make sure the sleeve fit is right too. Thank you for your tips and tricks from your build.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
I love the idea about the wig head on the top! I've been thinking about doing their arm pattern, too, but I think I really need to fix the shape of mine first - there's something going on around the neck that is causing things to not fit right on it, but I haven't yet pinpointed what that is.

I'm about to embark on my second Bootstrap dress form and I couldn't agree more on the instructions... First one I made to my actual measurements. Turns out - that was a stupid idea if you plan to use the form for making historical dresses which are worn over stays. So now I'm making a second version with the measurements taken in the stays. I am NOT looking forward to the last steps of this process (trying to figure out how the internal stabilizer goes in had me SO mad the first time...). Thanks for this video!!

@grisusweetie
@grisusweetie 3 года назад
@@enablingcuriosity Alternatively - and this is the route I will probably take when adjusting my second dress form - just leave out the cup section of the pattern so the form is "flat" and emulate booblage via the good old bra method. For me the place where my bust sits changes a lot between different types of stays and corsets and this should give me some flexibility. The waist part of the form can probably be cinched - but not as much as on a real person. Bootstrap tells you to stuff the bust really firmly so there def is no chance of moving that part with a corset.

Thank you so much for talking in detail about the pattern piece placement. I have the paper pattern cut out, I'm just waiting on my IV Pole to arrive before I purchase the PVC pipe. I have so many questions....did you iron your interfacing onto your fabric before cutting the pattern out?.......did you use muslin for the pole support pattern pieces?.......what other pieces of the pattern are placed on the fold beside the pipe casing......I am so thankful you showed how to sew that part because I most likely would have struggled with it. I know that I will be referring to your video often to follow your tips. Thank You!

My cousin ordered the custom fit plus size Bootstrap dress form pattern and had the same problem you did. The bust was way WAY to low. Like 3" to low! The bust looked like some sort of strange 2nd belly. Alien, so very alien! There's no way to adjust that kind of extreme discrepancy. Not even mentioning the assembly/sewing instructions really sucked. She also bought the arms add-on & that pattern was way off also. So we contacted Bootstrap and their help ( I use that word loosely here) was horrible. She's fighting to get a refund now which feels like it will be impossible. 4 days wasted on that thing! We ended up making a duct tape dress form for her instead which is exactly what we were trying to avoid sine she has back problems & can only stand for about 10 minutes at a time. What a waste of time & money.

They add a note for plus sizes to add measurements for custom fit...it is the second tab when filling in measurements. I wish they would allow us to save those measurements too, but they don't. I wrote mine down to use for other pattern orders. These measurements determine the bust placement on the chest.

If you were going to make another bootstrap form, how would you address the “squishy” issue? What would make it firmer, just a different type of fill? Also how do you plan on fabricating the daisies for the new dress?
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 4 года назад
I think if I were to make another from scratch, I would probably use larger seam allowances in several places, particularly the upper back, waist, and hips. I'm not too worried about the squishyness - more that it's too large currently. For the daisies, I tried an experiment that I found online cutting coffee filters into petal shapes, and it turned out really good, so I'm going to attempt the same thing with cotton organdy, I think, and see if that works.

I wonder if instead of the pole going all the way throw the form a short one could be used inside the dress form, the cardboard replaced with MDF and then a separate pole attached to the base like on a table? Working on the inner tube sleeve/back/front patterns. I am still unclear why I cut two of the back and front?? Also, I am still unclear where I am stitching them "to". Plus, why are we doing the quilting AFTER stitching them to the tube area? Wouldn't it have been simpler and easier to do the quilting/stitch lines before attaching to the tube sleeve? Need advice please on this part of attaching to the main dress form. Have watched your video over and over.....
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
I think the reason there are two of each is just for strength. If you mean where on the body they are stitched to, it's the center front and center back seams. I think the quilting is done after attaching them to the pole because then you can also quilt over the seam allowance if you want to.
