1. Yes, he was sued by a huge proportion of the people who appear in the movie 2. The participants were told this was a filming of a documentary about a russian (yes) immigrant, to explain the presence of a film crew, and signed releases agreeing not to sue no matter what happened. Most still sued. 3. Only 4 people are acting. Sacha, Ken Davitian who played Azamat, Pamela Anderson and the woman who plays the prostitute/wife Luelle 4. The reason most people seem to take a long time to crack is that from 450 hours of footage they picked only the very best "stooges" 5. The "hometown in Kazakhstan" is the supposedly poorest most remote village they could find in rural Romania. Those people were locals who were also told it was a documentary and occasionally given small directions ("hit the floor" or "pretend to kiss Borat") 6. Kazakhstan eventually realized banning the movie was counterproductive and embraced the joke. Their tourism slogan is now "Kazakhstan. Very nice." Really. 7. The people appearing in the film (other than the 4 actors) were not told. They all found out when the movie became HUGE and everyone was quoting it
@@7Link7 i really didnt realise pamela anderson was in on it and acting, I always thought he genuinely tried to put a bag over her without her knowledge, but honestly it makes sense that they got permission after
Would have thought most of this would be obvious too…like why would you think there acting just cause the camera is in there face? The are getting interviewed, of course there would be a camera.
absolutely - the genius of SBC is that he just goes and does stuff and sees what happens - the vast majority of everything is real and those unbelievable moments are super cringe and real..
You should definitely watch the 2nd which is maybe more impressive with what it achieved and who they were able to get in the movie (no spoilers but if you have seen the sequel you know what I am talking about) all while taking place during the 2020 election year and the start of Covid.
If you liked this you absolutely should do the sequel too. It's at least as good as the original, it feels a lot more pointed and intelligent in it's satire and Maria Bakalova, who plays Borat's daughter, is an absolute revelation, she's hilarious and she basically steals the whole movie.
George, Simone, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the pair of you laugh so much. This one was a joy to watch! Borat was originally a character on Sacha's "The/Da Ali G Show", which aired here in the UK in the early 00s. Both Ali G and Borat are equally hilarious. If you've not watched any episodes of The Ali G Show then I highly recommend them. Some of the interviews he does on various topics are absolutely brilliant.
I live in the Bible Belt and watched this in the theater. It was so fucking hilarious and what made it even better was the amount of people who got up and walked out 😂 the fight between Azamat and Borat cleared out about a dozen! 😂 I was in tears with laughter
Most was not staged, he did get sued afterwards (the frat guys in the RV sued him, for instance), and story goes the only one who was in on the joke from the start was Pamela Anderson, though of course the escort he marries is also an actress. The recent sequel is also pretty solid.
@@sodem2810 that is an excellent question…I’m not totally sure though, I just read that somewhere that that was a direct correlation to their divorce 🤷🏻♂️
yeah its actually a pretty common thing, human tend to froze in place when something unthinkable happens if you dont believe me, go ahead and pretend a kidnapping with your friend in public, 90% of the time people would just stand around looking not doing anything
@@lumi_projectthat is the case in public, but at a celebrity autograph sighning, with multiple security guards there with their 1 and only goal being to protect Pamela Anderson, no. No, they wouldnt freeze if she was attacked in front of them.
From what I remember, Kazakstan, especially the president was really offended when the movie came out but after a few years they warmed up to the satire it was because this movie single handedly put the country on the map and promoted tourism.
They took our full page adverts in the New York Times trying to refute the movie, but in the end they decided to go along with the joke and invited Borat to come back home.
Я хоть и не из Казахстана, хотя последние пол года жил там)) мне тоже не нравиться что они приплели его к фильму, хочу добавить что от Казахстана в фильме только флаг.
This film is so incredibly funny. Sascha has balls of steel. Most of these people had zero idea this wasn't absolutely a real person and a real documentary. To do these scenes and put himself in actual danger, especially in the sequel, while pretending to be the character is amazing. All worth it to expose these people's ignorance to the world, however.
That's a pretty bold statement. What for example has going full nude through a hotel atrium and dining hall to do with exposing the people's ignorance there?
2018 ... Pro-gun activist duped into sucking sex toy to fight terrorism in latest Sacha Baron Cohen show "Who is America?" ... he did fool several right wingers in that show . What comes to this Movie , over 90 time were cops called and even FBI team was following him , USA was a bit paranoid back in 2006 about people looking middle eastern .
so glad people are finally reacting to this, and especially that it's you two. i have never before or since had a movie theater experience to rival this. people were laughing louder than i'd ever heard, screaming, just pandemonium. wound up seeing it three times with different people, and the third time i thought my mom was gonna pass out from laughing so hard. i think for a minute it might have seemed a little dated to the mid 2000s - plus it was * so * popular that i think people got a bit burnt out on everyone quoting and referencing it constantly - but it very clearly holds up as an all-time comedy.
Same. There may be funnier movies (although not many of them), but I have never, ever seen a movie get the kind of reaction that Borat did when I saw it in theaters. The naked wrestling scene was just utter mayhem. People couldn't breathe. We weren't even laughing, we were just screaming.
I've never been on the floor rolling around and laughing in a theater before or since. I've never seen so many people (like 25 old people) walk out of a movie. Fantastic.
The Borat character originated on the Ali G show where Cohen played multiple characters. As Borat he went to a Tucson country bar and got everyone to see along to his song “Throw the Jew Down the Well”
Borat 2 was a huge disappointment. Cohen came up with all those outrageous situations, but people didn’t react as funny or inappropriate as they did in the first movie.
All of the people you see in the film outside of Kazakhstan and his producer, are real people, not in on the joke, and not payed actors. Sasha was sued dozens of times for this movie, none ever made it far, but a lot of people tried. Everything you saw people doing in reacting to was absolutely real.
In case you guys missed it, during a sports event in Kuwait, shortly after this movie was released, when Kazakstan won a medal they accidentally played the "anthem" from this movie during the medal ceremony. Was epic.
It was the 10th Arab Shooting Championship in Kuwait held in 2012. Maria Dmitrienko has won the Gold Medal and they played the wrong version of the National Anthem., In the end, they had to restage the ceremony.
In a deleted scene on the DVD they’re pulled over by cops while driving the ice cream truck. Borat and Azmat stay in character while the cops are walking towards the truck. Azmat suggests Borat should offer to have sex with the cops to get out of trouble
Borat is a comedy masterpiece i love the secret footage, Borat looking the p***y magnet in the car, and driving instructor, the feminist scene is hilarious, I can't watch the rodeo scene without laughing and cringe at the same time, and I always skip the fight between him and his manager even though it is funny as hell but its really gross once was enough LOL. Amazing reaction
Growing up in the UK there was a late night channel 4 programme called the 11 O clock Show. Its claim to fame is that it's 2 main presenters both had careers that quickly died but the guy they had to do the pre recorded sketches for the first few series was Sacha Baron Cohen. When he left for his own series they got a pre Office Ricky Gervais to replace him. Was so proud both of them went on to huge international success as they were the best part of that show
I've just read that they did the Pamela Anderson scene twice. *"The first time we did it at a book signing and I grabbed her over my shoulder and ran out with her and no one did anything.* *"I was like, 'What kind of fans are these?'"* *The second take sparked more of a reaction with fans stepping in to try to help their idol.*
@@Don-ii4vm I'm sorry, but the scene you're referring to did not lead to the divorce of Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock. Anderson and Rock were married in July 2006 and divorced in November 2006. The movie "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," which includes a scene in which the character Borat kidnaps Anderson, was released in November 2006. Therefore, it is not possible for the movie to have caused the divorce, which had already taken place.
@@UrbanNilssonOssian Gotcha. So actors dont get to see pre screenings? Could you let Sacha Baron Cohen know? He said thats what happened in a 2019 interviews. He also mentioned Anderson losing a bit of jaw bone?!? As you say though, kid rock claims thats not the case.
I genuinely think the second movie is just as good. I know people have a nostalgia hard on for this one. But the second one is fantastic, and doesn't skimp out on the uncomfortable funny humor the first has
I Found the 2nd One great too, and also: Maria Bakalova was a revelation as well (She’s also the One voicing for that telekenesis dog on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special).
My girlfriend told me she wanted to see this because she loved SBC in Talladega Nights... I warned her.... When we stepped out of the theatre her first words were "That was more nudity than I was expecting!"
this reaction was gold... George laughing his backside off and Simone jumping between disbelief and fits of giggles 😃 and that's Sacha Barron Cohen's work in a nutshell for ya lol
27:10 Out of all the face our brave reactors pulled during the film, this one by Simone has to be my favourite! The best example yet of a silent “Jesus, George!” Also, dammit Simone, actors are people too! 😁 As others have said, I’ve never heard people laughing as much as I heard them in the cinema while watching this movie. It was an incredible, unforgettable experience, and when the nekkid fighting started… wow wah wee waa! And yeah, legal fees must’ve been the biggest part of the movie’s budget. I think most of the suings came from people being embarrassed about the views they espoused on camera (especially the frat boys, if I remember correctly. Sure, they were clearly inebriated, but as they say, in vino veritas). While it was still in cinemas there were quite a few stories in the news about people bringing suit against the film, and that only made more people go and watch it!
YES, the segment on channel 16 morning show was REAL and legit ( at 9:15) as I was watching this LIVE in jackson Mississippi on WAPT16 morning show!. it was funny as hell!.
Never had an experience like this in a cinema before or after. Everyone was roaring with laughter from start to finish. I could barely hear the dialogue in the film from all the noise in the room. People left with tears down their face and aching jaws. A true masterpiece of comedy.
I was in junior high when this came out and you couldn’t take three steps in the hallways without hearing someone say “my wife”, “very nice”, “great success”
Seeing this movie in theaters was a very strange experience. I laughed my ass off for the entire run time and then when it was over I felt dirty for having seen it. Very strange feeling.
Apparently Pamela was also behid the jokes, especially on the kidnapping scene. When Borat was taking her, they had to shoot it again since no body came to rescue her
In 2012, Mariya Dmitriyenko won the Amir of Kuwait International Shooting Grand Prix, and the parody anthem from this movie was played when she was being presented with the award.
Every interaction Borat has with a person is 100% real and not in on the joke except for Pam Anderson. The drunk frat boys, the horribly racist guy at the rodeo, are all real, and Cohen wanted to hold up a mirror and show how awful a lot of the people in the US are. DEFINITELY check the sequel from last year which I think is even BETTER since the world has gotten so much worse since 2006; he's in much more hilarious/dangerous situations (like the far-right Trump rally he attends)! Also the story/character arc in the sequel is a lot better!
27:07 - somehow you managed to have a moment here worthy of the film. Seeing her response to face-sitting is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
He did (kinda) lose one suit... Macedonian Romani singer Esma Redžepova sued the Borat producers for €800,000, claiming that the Borat movie used her song “Chaje Šukarije,” but she never granted them permission to do so. Unlike some of the Borat lawsuits, this one wasn’t thrown out - instead, Redžepova was awarded €26,000. While she did get compensation, she got much less than what she asked for since Baron Cohen had requested permission from her production house to use the song, but she was never notified. Ones that got thrown out or dismmised include - 2 of the 3 guys in the RV... Claiming they were told the movie would not air in the US. Their suit was later dismissed in 2007, and although they sought an injunction to keep the film from premiering in DVD, it was also denied. -The Vllage of Glod, Romania, the villagers took legal action and asked for $83 million in damages, alleging they were only paid $70 to $100 each, or even three lei (the equivalent of $1.28 US dollars in 2004) to appear in the film. -Michael Psenicska, the driving instructor, sought over $100,000 in damages after the film was released. He was initially paid $500 to give Baron Cohen as Borat a driving lesson, but he thought he was taking part in a documentary “about the integration of foreign people into the American way of life.” His case was later dismissed in 2008. - Jeffrey Lemerond, who is included in both the trailer and a 13-second clip in the film, sued 20th Century Fox for using his image illegally. In Borat, he is shown running from the camera and yelling, “Go away!” as Borat tried to hug strangers on a New York City street. A judge deemed the clip “newsworthy” and the case was later dismissed. -The etiquette coach, who tried to help Borat with his manners, Kathie Martin sued Baron Cohen and 20th Century Fox, claiming Borat “tricked into being part of a childish prank.” The Supreme Court in Alabama turned the lawsuit down, citing the release form Martin signed before appearing in the film.
They actually had to film the scene where Pam Andersen gets kidnapped twice because the first time they filmed it not a single person in the crowd or her security team (who all weren't in on it) ran over to try and help her. So they had to reshoot the scene on a different day with a different crowd and security
So, I actually met Bob Barr a few years after this movie; we're both brothers in ΤΚΕ. Quiet inebriated, I said "Brother Barr, I loved you in Borat!" He sighed and said with a grimace."I don’t even get royalties for that sh!t."
Kazakhstan's national tourism board made "Very Nice!" their official advertising slogan a couple of years ago, so at least to some degree they've embraced it.
this film is amazing because there are people who laugh at it because of the european and cultural stereotypes not realising it’s actually making fun of their views
The village scenes were actually filmed in Romania. I've read that when the movie came out the people of Romania, and particularly in that village, were very angry. The people of Kazakhstan, however, were just thrilled to have the attention.
as a romanian ,we didnt care . The movie was filmed in a gipsy village and the local population was told that they are filming a documentary ,but when the movie came out they saw themselves being called rapists ,prostitutes ,abortionist ,etc so some of them were angry ....but the new borat movie was filmed in the same place i think and they seemed fine ,so ...peace ?
Some humorless idiots might have been offended, sure, but as a Romanian, i didn't care, we're generally not touchy and overly sensitive like people in the west. I was "very excite" to see the movie and found it hilarious. The depiction of the gipsy village is accurate, though.
Only made it about 7 minutes in before I came to my senses and decided to watch the full length. This one is too good to miss out on the whole reaction!
I was 18 years old. Year was 2006. Me and my best friend smoked a fat blunt behind Brendan Theaters in Vacaville Ca. Saw Borat, and we died. To this day I have never laughed so hard in my life
The frat bros were absolutely real. The Gamecocks are the mascot of the University of South Carolina and it gets commonly abbreviated to, well, you know
He's lucky he didn't get killed in all honesty. The Weatherman and driving instructors deserve Oscars just for being such good people. Great success! Very nice!
Bruno is a very underrated sasha movie its not as good as Borat but its still hilarious and its also him playing a character and messing with real people
