It might be a trend but it’s one I’m dang well hopping onto. The Eternal Dynasty Oni released this month on the One Page Rules Patreon [Link Further down] are a good opportunity to try this style out, a style I’ve wanted to try for quite a while now. So I took one of my favourite characters from Borderlands and copied his colour scheme. It’s certainly a lot of work and effort, but it’s hard to argue with the results.

The moment you started "blacklighting" the edges, the whole cellshaded look came together. Outstanding.

I am so glad to see another painter using acrylic gouache. I have been using them for two years now. Love what they do. And pretty versatile especially when used with mediums.

They do definitely need to be used with mediums, and take some getting used to when it comes to thinning them out, but the rewards is you can have a much smaller collection of paint that you can do a whole lot with.

Those black line are crisp! I'm not at this level yet. I still do uneven lines and it drives me crazy! Great looking mini!

The interesting part is that you are just following the lines already there on the model. For the recesses the tip of the brush follows the inside edge, for the edges you use the edge of the brush. Very few times do you ever have to actually make the line strait youself :D

This is really nice. I'm encouraged to try this on my space marines, necrons and votann. I love the style and I want a paint job with contrast that doesn't take Golden Demon levels of time to execute. My only constructive comment would be to cel shade all of it, not just the yellow. But maybe you did that later and I haven't seen it yet. New to your channel but subscribing!

It is all cell shaded, but because the dark metals are well, dark, it doesn't show up as vividly as it does on the yellow. But rest assured every edge and point got a line of black!

Great video, thanks for walking us through that. I might be encouraged enough to paint my GenCon Monster Fight Club Claptrap now! :) Or maybe use this paint style on my Craftworlds Start Collecting box... Or my Mantic Asterians... Or... :)

The asterians I think would look pretty stealer with this sceme. Or better yet. Same style but the Eridian colours!

I think blue will work fantastically, specially if it's light or vibrant.

Awsome Vid, I have always wondered how to get to this style and I might even give it a try now! how would you do organic shapes in this style?
@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying 2 года назад
I was actually looking on the borderlands website and they have some cosplay templates of all the characters which is a great reference. So things like hair they have black streaks running through the solid strands, for hands and stuff they just have the black on knuckles. So I'm sure there's a way to do it just following the examples they have and applying it to miniatures.

OPR also has some dwarf models that make for some good practice for more organic shapes. I suggest priming them and just doing the black lining for practice. This way you can just try it a bunch of times in quick succession, and you'll get closer to the look your going for every time. It took me about 3 or 4 tries before I got something workable. When you get comfortable with the technique start fresh and paint it up following the order of operations in this video.

This is fantastic but care to tell us the brand of the acrylic washes you used please?
@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying Год назад
Looks like what I did was add a bit of blue ink and medium to the teal mix. I use Scale 75 inks, but any ink should do as well as your favorite medium thinned with water or thinner. I did do a video on making pallet washes that are about this kind of thing, but it's just using my normal paint that's already on the pallet usually: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c9gKex6iBG8.html

Hello, thanks for the video. I have a question regarding the acrylic gouache paint that you used in the video. I bought the same set and I'm having issues with getting a solid coverage with the paints. How did you get solid coverage? I keep getting streaks when I use these paints
@PaintmanJourneying
@PaintmanJourneying Год назад
Do you mean the Turners Acryl Gouache? For the most part most of them do alright for me unless watered down a bit too much. Some colours are going to have some transparency regardless of how much pigment is in them because that's how the pigments works. So yellow red etc. So starting on a lighter undercoat should help. That's why I base the yellow parts grey first again. I also use an airbrush to get more even layers with my basecoats sometimes too. One other thing you can do is just squish them around in the tube a bit to make sure they're properly mixed with the binder.
