After restoring my old Swedish Mauser i had a beautiful military rifle but she had a pretty dark bore, question was would it still shoot ? well i went to the range and to my surprise she was a tac driver, gotta love those old 6.5 mm's, and i learned that day that a dark (pitted) bore is not a show stopper.

Very nice Mark. Sometimes best not to know certain things until justified. Myself I have a 224 Valkyrie barrel I bought and after installation learned it has chatter tooling marks the length of the barrel. Not necessarily a major issue but working to develop a handload it certainly bothers me just the same. All said it’s caused me to prepare a lapping exercise with Tubbs bullet series to see if I can improve the condition of the barrel. Take care.

I've used Tubb's Final Finish on three rifles. There was no detectable gain or loss in precision or accuracy. The system did remove chatter/tooling marks in one bore almost completely and in another it only had minimal effect. I would bet this is due to the "hardness" of the bore steel and how thoroughly you clean the bore between shots. Ultimately I found Final Finish speeds up the break in time by causing more wear per shot.

stuckindakota4311 Thanks so much for the contributing comments! Do appreciate you helping to set set possible expected/unexpected outcomes to the Tubbs system. Chasing an appropriate load for my Valkyrie is frustrating when first knowing the tube you’re putting copper down isn’t already perfect to start with. Hopefully I’ll know more soon. Love knowing good folks are out there with good experience of paths already traveled. Thanks again!

@@johnblythe8229 Also, I did find several 90 gr. projectiles mixed in with the 69 gr. bullets in each set (.224). Make sure to use appropriate reduced loads.

stuckindakota4311 No Way - Really??? On my end dealing with handloads I weigh bullets and match to like weighed brass as well. I’m about to take the next step and move into volume brass weighing with a mixture of water alcohol. I’m not a bench shooter nor beyond a 1000yd as Georgia USA’s landscape doesn’t allow. My focus is precision shooting at the highest degree that I can financially. I’m very aggravated about the Valkyrie barrel chatter tooling marks but not much I can do beyond twisting the barrel off and replacing. Hence my interest in testing the Tubbs treatment. Preliminary factory load testing indicates the Hornady 88grs seem to do best. That said I plan to do the Tubbs treatment and test all loads again (Reference compare my baseline to post Tubbs treatment) then pursue latter testing on handloads. Again, thanks for your insight.

I bought a cheap USB borescope for my rifles a few years ago and that was interesting, but I found it to be more useful for looking Inside my ears and in my throat. There's a Japanese home colonoscopy kit but that's not my idea of a DIY project.

Great perspective, I have heard people state that a dirty bore causes inaccuracy, but really I have never seen a difference in how any of my guns shoot, that is to say, I have never found that my guns shoot any different with a fresh cleaned bore as opposed to a bore that has been dirty in my safe for a couple of days because I did not get to it since my last shoot. I don't do rapid fire either so I don't really see a spread with bore temperature either. Put it this way, if one of my guns is not shooting well, it is because I am having an off day!

Yes I think that most if honest would have say the same, us, the shooter is the big deal and the barrel/rifle is rarely that biggest concern, but commonly get most the blame, Cheers and all the best.

Mark, you keep talking about the "end of the barrel" that is important: I have found that the throat is important in the last four (4) barrels that I have "worn" out. Please tackle this issue also as I think a worn throat is the main cause of drop in performance.
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 5 лет назад
Yes as said, wear in the throat can cause a drop in speed, not so much in accuracy, but lots of details, will do more videos on wear done the track, Cheers
@brunoterlingen2203
@brunoterlingen2203 5 лет назад
@@markandsamafterwork Thank you for your reply Mark. I have not done any Chrony work after the throat is worn, so I can't verify if the velocity does drops off, but I can tell you the pattern of loss of accuracy in the last four (4) barrel - all the same pattern re loss of accuracy. This has happened in a 5.56x45, a 25-06, and two 22-250s. I suggest that you post some images taken with the borescope and post them on your channel so that those of us who can't afford the cost of a borescope, can see the results. @@brunoterlingen2203 really quiet simple, if you have put lots of rounds threw a barrel, at some stage it will be too worn, time to re-barrel, faster with a high velocity cartridge, still no need to bore scope at that stage, but for those that need to see... But keep in mind, some that like to clean a lot, do more damage to the barrel than the rounds. All up, trying to say don't worry too much about a bit of rough look in a barrel on a new rifle, really not entering into all the different things that cause accuracy problems, that can be for a different video/s, Cheers
