Glad you nailed it in saying no one particular round for extreme long range. Myself I do lean toward the 7mm Ultra but it’s also a barrel roaster 🔥 generally speaking. Have examined a few a few barrels with a bore scope and interesting to watch the spider cracking and barrel erosion. Keep doing the stuff you do... We all enjoy living vicariously through you two. By the way, several in Georgia, USA have indicated they want to purchase an adjustable rear bag rest. If sales come through pls know I’m preaching your concepts. Still wanting to purchase a 4 port muzzle break for me 338 Lapua Mag

Would be awesome to see ultra sub moa at 1760 yards. The infamous 1 mile shot, ultra sub moa project would be a great series to for you and Sam to do. Most of us wil never even get to attempt a shot at 3500 yard and beyond. I would define ultra sub as 1/3 moa or less. Consistently getting 6 inch groups at 1760 yards and then going into what is needed to do it. I hope you guys will consider doing some kind of project in this category. I truly believe it would be a huge series you guys can do. I also think there are so many people that have the opportunity to shoot at 1760 yards, and with that I also believe that the now infamous 1 mile shot is what most people believe to be the benchmark of long distance precision rifle. Thank you for the great content and I look forward to seeing episode 1 of the infamous 1 mile shot, ultra sub moa project.

Hi Aaron, groups at those distances depend more on conditions than equipment and shooter, you need very stable conditions, because you can not have wind readings over the range that are affective, the bullet simply travels too high over shot to be able to use flags. Here is a video of us with a factory rifle and Sam ends up with mostly the right conditions at almost a mile, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SSlfGO1ggtg.html Cheers

That was a great shot. About 12 second flight times give or take. That loop is still amazing to me. You guys are making those shots with relatively light rifles. Our rifles weigh 60 pounds and use highly customized machine rests. Has anyone been “eccentric” enough to play with any old or modern 20 mm cartridges. If SKS industries are still in buisness, they could make a shorter case like the JDJ. JGS would make me the reamers. Maybe later.

If you’re interested in a 7mm cartridge that shoots a 195gn @ 3000fps, check out the 7mm-300. It takes a 300wm case and necks it down to 7mm. I think it pushes a 180gn Berger @ 3150fps with a 26” Barrel.

Your comment on smaller calibers not giving as good feedback is spot on, I like shooting 22lr myself as my best so far has been 600 yards, so pretty much subsonic from the moment it leaves the barrel. Great point that larger calibers may show bigger splash and dust in the air which helps getting on target. I am always learning watching your videos, I may need a Charlie for my longer shots

If your shots are just above the speed of sound when they leave the barrel, it might be a good idea that they are subsonic from the barrel, to avoid the transonic funkiness.

Another great perspective on ELR! This is why I mostly shoot .223/5.56 in my area: if I only have 1400yds MAX then why waste the powder pushing a bigger pill? The concept of shooting that far with a .223 is no different than shooting 4k with a .338. And what you learn by shooting beyond your caliber's reasonable expectations is transferable to the bigger guns/shots--if you ever get that chance. I encourage my students to start with a .223 or .308 because you can learn these same lessons without taking out a second mortgage or selling your child's kidney.

Mark and Sam - first off , I love your teamwork! So thank you for sharing your videos ! I really appreciate watching other people do what I enjoy doing with rifles. Going waaaaaaayyyy outside the standard “effective range” of a cartridge and running the numbers and having a blast while doing it ! Now that I’m moving up in the world (caliber) . I was hoping you can answer me this - at what range is your typical zero when you set up your rifle before you run it out to past 2000 yards ? Do you do something as simple as 100 yard zero so the math going up is predictable and the velocity and drop is still close to what it was at the muzzle ? Or do you run it at 300-600 for the initial zero ? Thank you and I wish you and your wife a happy and successful 2020 ! -Taren

Hi Mark and Sam, great video and very informative as always, I’m currently looking at a couple of rifles chambered in 338 lapua magnum, I’m doing some research for various equipments to go along with it, I have a question seeing as you use this cartridge in your Sako TRG, what dies do you use for case prep when reloading? more specifically, brand? Part number for a set would be extra handy, there’s a few out there, but I’m finding mixed reviews on most of them, you don’t lead people up the garden path and I trust your view on these things, Cheers from Melbourne

Hi mark nice vid. What FPS SD do you usually aim for in your hand loads and how many shots do you take to measure it? I’m getting a tikka t3x superlite in 7mm rem mag for mainly stalking but also want to take it out to 750m if I need to in a hunting application. I know the barrel is super skinny so I don’t plan to sit there and have 10 shots. Is a 15SD good enough for that? I haven’t started loading yet but my .270 win was averaging a 12-20SD for the handloads I made for it

The best is the one you've invested time into to learn and can afford to shoot. Going to make a much better distance shooter if you get out every weekend to sling dozens of 30 cal rounds than if you save up for a .50 and can barely afford to feed it, or worse, never actually stretch its legs far enough to learn how to shoot at its further capabilities and actually learn wind.

Hello Mark, I really enjoy your videos. Lots to learn. I am contemplating my next rifle build for quite some time now and would love to read your thoughts on it. I have a 2.400m range nearby (lucky me) and want to have a rifle build to reach farther than with my .300 Win Mag. The calibers in question are .300 Norma Mag and .338 Lapua Mag, both rifles otherwise being quite similar in weight and suppressed. I am currently leaning towards the .338 Lapua Mag because as far as I read up on it it would be affected less by wind and distances are known. I would love to read your oppinion on it. Thanks!

So My Take Is .50BMG Would Be The Best Universal ELR Rifle Caliber For 2Mile Shooting Because of The Ballistic Coefficient of The .50 BMG 😮🙂
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 4 года назад
Well......nope, not even close, lol....sorry, will explain, Cheers
@DominicPaz
@DominicPaz Год назад
Long skinny bullets have much better ballistics for long range shots. 50 BMG is actually kind of tubby for long range because it's designed to obliterate hard targets, not to be accurate. The 416 Barrett is a more refined caliber based on the 50 BMG case. Passed 800 yards it carries more energy, and remains super sonic all the way passed 1 mile. I think that would be my choice if I just wanted to buy the longest distance mark I could. His whole point is that ELR is all about consistency and shooting passed the point your bullet becomes transonic though, so it's kind of beside the point.

That tops out at 3200 westtexordnance.com/7mm-300-norma-improved/ He’d need something like a shortened cheytac, probably a 338 enabler necked down to 7mm. Its going to be massively inefficient on powder charge and a super long barrel to get to the 3800fps he wants. I wonder if a 195 will survive that launch, I’d look at the 151 warners at 4k+. You can go with a necked down 33xc, but that doesn’t fit with his short fat testing (6.5 saum v 6.5-06). I’m pretty happy with the 7 saum (184s@2920) and focusing on low velocity spreads.

Yes as said, not necessarily a do-able thing, just a thought at the moment, and I really like the 6.5 SAUM, Cheers

@Abeene 5 лет назад
@@markandsamafterwork Paper says hit percentages going up as you increase the case volume, with B/C of heavier bullets more than offsetting velocity of lighter bullets. I get that from an enjoyable day shooting, a smaller caliber will give you potentially more enjoyment and opportunity to test your abilities. I much prefer shooting a 20+ round f-class strings from my 6xc than a 300 win mag. But, from an actual hit percentage (or group size), has your testing shown the reduced recoil to mean increased hit percentage at a certain point? E.g., do you have a smaller group at 2500 yards with the 6.5 saum vs your 375 Gibbs? I'm wrestling with this question as I decide to shift into 338AI or continue working with short action magnums.
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 5 лет назад
Well you already know the answer, you can group better with less effort behind your 6xc than with your 300wm, that is not that the 300 is less accurate, it just moves you move, so takes more effort to group well, we, the shooter have more influence than we might think. That said, getting good at dealing with hard hitters can sometimes make you even better at shooting the nicer ones, as always, all in the details, Cheers

hi Mark, ever think of shortening a 50 bmg and necking it to 375? should be more efficient than cheytac and faster if it's possible to do. might make that 5000 shot easier. Also I'm building a 6.5 saum and I'm wondering which mdt chassis is your favorite, the mdt acc, ess, or lss gen 2 xl, and also I was wondering how much lighter the lss is than the ess. Thanks and happy Easter!

Hi Paul, not sure if you got the gist of what I was trying to put forward, less whack makes easier shooting.... and yes that round is being developed as we speak (not me). As for the MDT chassis's all good, and weights are listed on there site, but I don't make recommendations, sorry, Cheers.

My 2 cents for most peoples' range and budget limitations is a 243 or 6 Creedmoor in a 24-26" heavy barrel with a 1-7 or 1:8 twist. 6mm bullets in 105-115 grains are capable of terrific accuracy out to 1200 yards and ELR fun out to a mile or more, all with little recoil. If you have a lot of $ or a range longer than a mile then you are lucky and the sky is the limit!

They do make rails that are angled to add MOA or MILS “to your scope” essentially. I’m sure you could find one that you could mount up to give you some more elevation.

Mines already mounted on my bergara, just send me over with rifle and scope. FYI my arken passed tall target test after level, and has reliable turret adj up to 523yds but haven’t stretched passed that. I can’t give a real review of glass I’m west Texas after 12x and above because of the 95-100deg days. But for $450 I’m not complaining. I have a 20 moa base, and zeroed at 100yds I still have 89moa up to play with

Heavy artillery takes rotation of the Earth into account. Is that an issue for ELR?

For LR hunting here in Nevada I chose 6.5 PRC in 143 gr. Hornady Precision Hunter (ELD-X) cartridges. VERY accurate in my Browning X-bolt Pro rifle. Great on 1,100 yard steel at my range in Boulder City, NV but only for the 1st three shots, until the skinny barrel heats up. But hey, It's a hunting rifle and I should not need more than 3 shots on big game.

I don't know if you heard about the Canadian sniper who killed an ISIS member from 2.2 miles using 50 cal A MAX. I still can't believe it but it is already a confirmed kill from the first shot. from what I have experienced, the 50 cal become unpredictable after it goes subsonic and for the marksman to hit from 2.2 Miles, it would need like 3 to 10 shots depending on many factors. On the other hand, I never tested 416 Barett or Chaytac but both of them claim to have better stability on long ranges far beyond what 50 cal can do. Chaytac claims that with one cold bore shot, you will be able to hit the target. While Barrett claims that cheytac requires a special computer to really give you the precise calculations of elevation and winds while their 416 Barretts can be easily calculated by any ballistic software accurately which makes it the best ELR bullet ever. While both claims to be the best, you see the longest 3 confirmed kills were all done by 50 cal. it makes me so confused to figure out if I should stick to 50 cal for ELR or to try also the 416 Barrett and Cheytac. what about if I have to pick one of them ( either Barrett or Cheytac ) which should be the best choice to pick? A question that I am struggling in finding an answer for.
@markandsamafterwork
@markandsamafterwork 5 лет назад
Well, simple thing is claims and facts are not always the same, hitting something on the first round once is great but doesn't prove accuracy, certainly the 50bmg and the Amax are just not that accurate, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen, sometimes lucky it better than good, or to put it another way, a broken clock it still spot on twice a day. Beyond that I haven't used the 416 yet, I plan to later this year, I will make my call then, Cheers
