A few months ago, I bought a Teslong with the screen. It is definitely hard to know what you're looking at in the beginning ;when everybody that shows you a barrel on RU-vid looks like a mirror. I saw cracks in carbon and thought it was fire cracking until I cleaned it. thank you for putting things in perspective. my buddies wanna borrow it and I tell them you will see things you don't wanna see.

Several years ago, I bought a used rifle. The bore seemed to be okay, but it never shot very well, no matter how much I fiddled with bedding or load combinations. It wasn't until I acquired a Teslong borescope that I saw the problem- the throat was completely trashed, with severe fire cracking. Had I had the borescope when first looking, I never would have bought that rifle.

Great video. For setting focus: I use an empty cartridge case for the barrel being inspected. The neck of the brass is going to get you the correct focal length of the mirror. 😎👍

Even the budget friendly generics can be a huge help in cleaning and solving problems but don’t be frightened by what you see as opposed to what you expect to see, even some bad looking barrels can shoot great! Ultimate reloader, I have the one you need to show what Drain cleaner does if you aren’t careful. Bought it second hand and it looks like lava rock!

I have seen many people destroy barrels trying to get that mirror finished barrel. While carbon can and will fowl your barrel, copper actually is beneficial in many cases. Obviously carbon is harder than your barrel and therefore will only cause a source of buildup for pressure issues, but copper is softer. It will fill in the defects in the barrel and increase accuracy. And because its softer any coper buildup that is too high will essentially be wiped away as the next bullet passes by. its like spreading spackle against a crack on a wall. The first few times you wipe a large lump of spackle against a wall the crack will fill in. But after so many times there will be no more spackle getting applied no matter how much you apply and smear using your spreader. It just continues to wipe off. The wall is harder than the spackle so it simply wipes off. I have seen many people use horrifically caustic materials to dissolve the coper and they wind up dissolving bits of their barrel while they are at it. The solvent will find its way into those imperfections the coper previously filled and will often make those imperfections larger and larger as they find more surface area to dissolve leading to the need to clean your barrel more often and wear it out quicker. The effect is what you describe. lava rocks. If they are not careful with it they could ruin the barrel very quickly. But people are in a panic because they are not seeing a shiny polished barrel and we are conditioned to think that a clean barrel should look like its brand new and never fired. All that is needed is for the carbon to get removed. The coper can stay. it in general is doing more good than harm. With coper, if a wire bush cannot dislodge it, it isn't doing you any harm.

Second best tool I bought next to a chronograph. After you look at a few barrels you quickly learn a good barrel from a not so good barrel. What is amazing is how rough one barrel can be and still shoot a "few" phenomenal groups when it fouled the right amount.. lol

Been using scopes since medical endoscopes were the only 'quality' option (early 80's), and a selection of scope tube diameter o-rings are invaluable for centering the scope in the bore of you aren't going to change the mirror. Or your bores are larger than biggest mirror. LEDs are a HUGE improvement over C-cell powered incandescent scopes. I'll be ordering a Lyman tonight. Few of my rifles have throats as pristine as the rifles you showed, and my original 300 Jarrett barrel was plenty accurate until the "alligator back" erosion had migrated over 4" down the bore. Thanks for the video. You definitely sold a Lyman 2.0 to this 62yr old hunter.

Good video! I've had a Lyman borescope for several years now and it is definitely scary to look through... But, for a low resolution, wired unit, it all performs well. Some of my older barrels look absolutely horrible but still perform their job well. I looked in an older pistol when I first got the borescope and had a scare. Giant, long crack along with some smaller ones! I ran a patch through it to get a better look and the cracks were gone. Pocket lint! 😂 Beware the hair!

My mid '60's .257 Weatherby that was purchased used w/o the benefit of looking down the barrel with a bore scope wasn't grouping at all. I wondered what condition the barrel was in & bought a Teslong & ran it down the barrel. That 1st look was SCARY! It had a lot of copper & carbon build up & serious 'alligator skin' look to the throat, as well as quite a few squiggly lint like pits in the barrel (nothing like his 6.5 Carcano!). After a very thorough cleaning with both Carbon & Copper solvent & a little scrubbing with JB bore paste, he alligator skin is still in the throat & squiggle pits scattered through out the barrel, but at least it's shiny & shoots acceptable groups now.

Gunsmith here: I once had a customer with a bolt that was locked up. He had placed the rifle in an after market stock and the front action screw was interfering with the bolt on that particular model. After re torturing the action screws I used a borescope to count the number of threads I needed to shorten the screw. I know there's other ways to do that job that's just what i happened to use since i already had the bore scope out.

Gavin I love my Arisaka’s. I bought a used sporterized hunting rifle Type99 in 7.7 Japanese. I couldn’t get it to shoot worth a damn. Got a bore scope and, oh no!!!!! There’s a huge gouge and burr halfway down the bore. How it got there is anyone’s guess. As I got towards the muzzle I saw what looked like a bunch of spiders webs. I wish there was a way to send you the video! I was freaked out!! I finished cleaning the rifle, double checked it, it was still there. I put the rifle away and haven’t touched it since. The cracks look like spider’s webs, or a cracked eggs. And how does a gouge and burr that big get halfway down a bore? Any help is appreciated!

Recently bought a Browning B78. 22-250 chamber. Barrel is in really bad condition lots of rust and some pitting. You mean using JB paste do you also use Kroil oil? My plan is to start with that combination and have been soaking the barrel for about a week with Kroil oil. I’m going to use a 20 caliber Iosso brush with patch wrapped around it and gradually work up to the.224 brush. What do you think about my plan. Any suggestions would be appreciated greatly. Thanks

I once cleaned an old .284 Winchester, soak the barrel with hoppes for a day, then scrub and patch for half an hour, repeat every day until no more copper on patches. I think it took about two weeks. You didn't need a bore scope to see the pitting! I reckon I could have smelted the copper on the patch into an ingot! Never did find out if it shot any good after that. My two cents is: start with a new barrel and clean after every use, even if it was one shot or an un fired hunting trip. Oil the barrel for storage, and make sure you clean the barrel before shooting. That's all about steel barrels, stainless probably less maintenance. Hope Gavin replies to you.
