Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf | FIRST TIME REACTION! 

Steppenwolf was a Canadian-American rock band from 1968 to 1972. Their biggest hits were "Born To Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride" & "Rock Me" but other songs are "Straight Shootin’ Woman", "Hey Lawdy Mama", "Who Needs Ya", "Move Over", "Monster" etc. Both of their songs "Born To Be Wild" & "The Pusher" were used prominently in the 1969 cult film "Easy Rider".

Memories when this song came out...I remember a group of motorcycles driving down my street very casually, and this song was blasting from one of the bikes. What an image!!! Some say the term "heavy metal" came from this song..."heavy metal thunder".

Absolute legends from that great age of music, late sixties/early seventies. Magic Carpet ride should be your next listen but they had lots of hits.

That's John Kay singing and playing the guitar. This was their first major hit in the sixties and they continued into the seventies. My husband and his friends saw them in 74 I believe. Magic Carpet Ride, The Pusher and many more hits from these guys!

Every time I hear this I'm reminded of when I was working at a mental health facility. This particular evening, I was working with the Children (under 10). We had this little blonde headed boy who had behavior issues. His father was a big guy, a biker with tats, always wore a leather jacket, terrifying to see but he was a great guy who dearly loved that boy. Anyway, on this night the boy had an issue and became uncontrollable (kicking, screaming, hitting, throwing objects, etc.). He was placed in a time out room to relax, which he generally did quite quickly. On this night we were standing by the door (procedure, never leave a person in time out alone) and this clear, ringing little voice rang out "Booorn to be wiiillld!". We all just lost it. We all dearly loved that boy to.

These guys started in Yorkville as Sparrow and they have some other great songs also. A couple were used in the movie Easy Rider if you ever get a chance to see that one.

This came out in 1968. The mid to late 60s, early 70s, was a great time to begin listening to rock music. Everything was new. We had the Beatles, of course, and the emergence of the Who, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, CCR, Pink Floyd, the Allman Brothers, the Doors, the Kinks, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, to name a few. These bands and many others laid the foundation of rock music.

FYI: The term Heavy Metal was not even heard of or uttered before the eighties after rock died. Rock died when the artists lost all control of the studios (late 70's.)

Steppenwolf was progressive rock WAY before progressive existed. This was the theme song to the movie Easy Rider. Good movie.

It featured in the late 60s/early 70s counterculture movie, Easy Rider, about a couple of young men (played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper) who set off on their motorbikes to see America. Two more great songs from the soundtrack that explore the movie's theme of seeking freedom are The Ballad of Easy Rider and Wasn't Born to Follow, both great tunes and full of gorgeous, mystical/ fanciful, liberating psychedelic imagery... My brother had this LP when I was a kid. I tried to buy it later on CD and got the wrong disc. I thought it was a greatest hits album. But it wasn't. It was Steppenwolf's first album, from January 1968. Everything on it is great. The Second album though has what should be your follow-up with the song Magic Carpet Ride.

"Back in the day" Records stores had categories for music. Classical, Country & Western, Soul, Jazz, Folk, Contemporary, ROCK. Sub Genera is a new school distinction, we did not need back then.

John Kay's music reflects his and his mothers escape from behind the iron curtain. He is not shown on the album cover in this video but it is his voice. It was a time when other members of the original band stuck out and used Steppenwolf as thier name. Big law suits, John won. Check him out, see what a rough life he overcame.
