Anyone else suddenly feel like they belong in a museum when they see reactions like this. Sir Rod Stewart is a music legend young man. Rod is still playing and performing today at 78.
Ironically it seems that a fair number of "reactors" have had limited exposure to a wide variety of music yet the possibilities available to them online is far greater now than when the music they're reviewing was created. I think that a lot of it is due to "niche marketing" but that still doesn't explain their seeming lack of patience in accepting and understanding the music that they're being exposed to.
This guy is either a moron, or just trying to get clicks. Regardless of age, he would have come across this song at some point in life. It is an iconic song--not a 70s song.
@@michaelwduffy It will be all the women he had including several miss worlds; I remember watching a documentary where they interviewed a lot of his former girlfriends they all basically said the same thing, that why would you not be still friends with the man when he was a god in bed,
Rod Stewart is a HUGE star...He tours and makes music in 2023 and draws a ton of people to his shows. He is a chapter in any history of music book.....It is hard to believe that you have never heard of him.
I think this guy is fill of crap claiming he never heard of Rod Stewart and he makes the same claim on several videos about many well known music artists. He is merely one of many of his generation who are putting out videos like this. Probably easier to do this than to get a real job. Time for a lot of these " music commentators " to move out of the basement, get out from under the rock and start actually being productive members of society .
Rod Stewart is a British rock & pop singer, songwriter with a distinctive raspy singing voice. His music career started in the 60's. Rod Stewart was in quite a few groups before going solo. He was in "The Dimensions", "Jeff Beck Group" & "Faces". He had a lot of great hits such as "Reason To Believe", "Mandolin Wind", "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "You Wear It Well", "Sailing", "Tonight's The Night", "You're In My Heart", "Rhythm of My Heart", "Hot Legs", "I Was Only Joking", "Some Guys Have All The Luck" & many more.
@@eturfrey Sorry mate but Rod was in The Faces. Correct, he was not in The Small Faces. The Faces were The Small Faces + Ronnie woods And Rod and minus Steve.
His real name Roderick. His career of rock blues rock soul spans almost 6 decades. He is one of the GOATS singer/songwriters. Maggie May is based on his quick deflowerment by an older woman
He does not have a bad song….his voice is a classic ❤️ Anything from Hot Legs to Forever Young. Keep traveling down this rabbit hole, you won’t be disappointed
Yeah, all of us old-timers just about lost our dentures to hear you describe ROD STEWART as "classical". I'm still trying to recover! While you're on Rod Stewart, you should check out "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?". That's another of his classical tunes. Bless your heart! You're so young! I have socks older than you!
@@michaelwduffy Yeah, I’m not even sure. I’ve got boxes in storage that I haven’t opened since before you were born. 🤷♀ What can I say? Life doesn’t always go according to our plans.
Released in 1971. It was a hit right from the beginning. He has a lot of wonderful songs. But this has always been a favorite. His voice!! What can I say??? Thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories. Love and Blessings!
Rod Stewart performed in front of the largest crowd ever, 4.2 Million, at Copacabana Beach on December 31, 1994, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. And this song dominated the airwaves when it came out. ✌️❤️🎶
Hi, Yes! An ICON, LEGEND...he is, really happy someone requested this, Rod Stewart has many iconic, lengendary songs. WOW! I love first reactions. Enjoy the journey.👍☝️🤓
FYI. Rod is singing about an older woman that introduced him to sex. Not the first person to confuse love with their first time experience. True story. Love Rod❤.
Definitely a dark tinge to the song he and many people didn’t pick up on. Far darker now, as back then a teen boy was considered ‘lucky’ to meet an older woman (clearly at least in her 40s or 50s, as several lines hint at) who gives it to him. Not nowadays.
Boy, does this bring back memories! At 69, I was 16, a junior in high school when this came out. I still have the 45, the other side is "Reason to Believe;" another great song!
At 68,I was 17 from London and this is THE record that I remember from my first holiday abroad from England in 1972 in Lloret-Del-Mar,Spain which millions of British people invade every year for the guaranteed summer sun.
One of so many great Rod Stewart songs, a massive back catalogue of superb music. Try "Downtown Train", "Reason to Believe", "This Old Heart of Mine" and my personal favourite "Mandolin Wind". The instrument you asked about is a mandolin.
Rod Stewart is British and is one of the biggest rock stars on the planet with his distinctive voice and a career spanning several decades. Glad you have discovered him.
Sir Roderick David Stewart CBE is a British rock and pop singer and songwriter. Born and raised in London, he is of Scottish and English ancestry. With his distinctive raspy singing voice, Stewart is among the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 120 million records worldwide.🎶💃
Rod Stewart does not have a bad song! My 4 favorites are "Reason to Believe", "You Wear it Well" , "Hot legs" and "Tonight's the Night". Fun fact, when "Tonight's the Night" came out in 1976, it was considered a somewhat risque song. I was a senior in high school and when it came on the radio, my very strict Italian dad said "what the Hell is this" and turned the radio off, LOL!! Boy how times have changed!! 😄
You have to listen to The Killing of Georgie (full version). Rod has reinvented himself every decade since the 1970s. He still tours to packed out stadiums even though he's now 78 years old!
I used to laugh and brush off the old metaphor that a lot of Reactors use about "...living under a rock", but Dude, you've been living under a rock. You seem to have a lot of catching up to do. Keep up the adventure. You're gonna enjoy it.
Just a little tip , much of the 70s music wasn't straight up R& R. There was Southern rock , a blend of rock , blues & country..Bands like the Allman brothers were absolute fire . CCR, Marshall Tucker band , all highly influential, check them out . Then there was Motown , mid 60s through the 70s, Disco with hot groups like the BeeGess . The deal is 70s music can't be narrowly defined as just R& R. And the talent range back then was incredible with singers & groups who played multiple instruments & had amazing vocals . No auto tune, or computer gimmicks either
You are wearing a University of Edinburgh shirt, in this video, which is fitting, because Rod Stewart is a Scottsman. The secret to his success, I believe, is an impeccable taste in which songs he should cover. This sense of his has served him tremendously. One example is "Handbags and Gladrags". Many other talented and famous singers had covered it but gotten nowhere with it. But Rod's version made it into a big hit. Rod the Mod!
A legend, an amazing artist. Back in my day when you followed your fav artist's you had to literally follow them, this was before computers, internet, cable music channels, social media and cell phones. All we had was Albums, 8-track tapes, cassettes, Am/Fm radio and concerts. Music was more real, raw and had emotional power. I love the classic's, 60s, 70s and 80s. Thanx for the memories, Peace
You can spend hours listening to Rod Stewart and the songs keep on coming. " Forever Young" This song is later in his career and is a masterpiece. " Do you want my Body" " Hot Legs " show another side. He also released albums of classic 40's and 50's songs.
Just to bring in some perspective for those who are commenting about how shocked they are that Rod Stewart wasn't already known, how many of you were familiar with the stars of the 1920s back in the 70s when this song came out? This song, which I have loved all my life since I was born in 1974, is about 50 years old. Why would he be familiar with Rod Stewart? It's great he's interested in understanding more about the awesome music we had when we were young!
His father is Scottish, but he was born in London. He wrote so many panty-droppers that he’s a legend. It’s a shame the young people no nothing of what has come before they arrived.
Surprising you've never even heard of Rod (short for Roderick). One of the biggest rock stars. Period. The instrument you think sounds "classical" is a mandolin. If you really like Rod, lucky for you and all of us, he has a 50+ year career of incredible music.
I cannot believe anyone's so young as to not know Maggie May!! I'm 59, old enough to be your mom, maybe your Granny, but sheeesh, I feel OLD! God love ya, young man.
No the intro is very folky and somewhat classical. Back then everyone was into multiple styles . That’s why the music was so fantastic. You’d love Rod and guitar god, Jeff Beck doing Ain’t Superstitious.
Sir Rod Stewart, a legend in the 70's, still going strong today. You have a life time of his music to enjoy. At the time of Maggie, Rod was enjoying a successful career as lead singer with the Faces, as well as his solo career. Much of his music at this time featured the Mandolin as heard on Maggie. I like most of Rods work over the years, but mainly favour his early work. Try "Brocken Dream" recorded with Python Lee Jackson, but make sure it's the original version.
Rod Stewart a music legend, originally from Scotland, brought a whole different vibe to the rock music world in the 70's and is still performing at 78. So glad you had the opportunity to hear him. Loved your reaction, especially the surprised look when he really kicked off. The instrument you were asking about is the mandolin, played in most Scottish folk music. Rod was ahead of his time. PS, might want to check out "Forever Young" by Rod, it is amazingly beautiful.
My absolute favorite Rod Stewart song. I was 12 when this came out, but I have a sister who is 3 years old and a brother who was 5 years older than me. All these new releases were played Non-Stop LOL. So I had an advantage at a very young age. I think I was introduced to Led Zeppelin in the '60s at the ripe old age of like eight or nine. My mom would have killed my brother and sister LOL. ✌❤😎
I can relate. I was 14 when Maggie May came out but had two brothers - one 3 years older and another 2 years older than me! Love Maggie May, and so many other songs of his. My older brother was getting me to listen to Uriah Heap (I think that’s spelled correctly) and Black Sabbath as well, although I didn’t necessarily like those groups all that much. 🤣. He did introduce me the Tommy The Who album which I actually liked! But give me James Taylor, Carole King, Dan Fogelberg, etc.
@@steveandtammyb My best friend in the neighborhood's older sister introduce me to Carole King and James Taylor and Carly Simon and Cat Stevens etc when I was about 11 or 12 ✌❤😎
Did you get the part where Maggie is actually a much older lover (than the "protagonist" singing the song: "The morning sun when it's on your face really shows your age ...")? Another great early Rod Stewart hit to react to is "Sailing" ...check it out next, I recommend!
saw him in concert several years ago, I think he was 74 at the time, still sounds just as good as he did in 1971 when I first heard the 45, Maggie May and Reason to believe. He has so many hits, definitely worth checking out. Loved your first reaction!
Hello from Cody Wyoming! This song was on the jukebox at the bar I used to go play pool... I've heard it a hundred times and never gets old! Good for you😊 you're awesome by the way
Great Reaction, Michael and a couple of words of advice from this 68-year-old Londoner.:) Firstly do what most reactors do and use the "5-second Rewind" button for continuity as it is easy to miss the significance of a line when it is broken up by a pause. In respect of Rod. He is a great VISUAL Artist so, in the future, go with the Official, accompanying, videos, as he is a great Showman. During this song, they used to play Football(soccer) on stage during THe Mandolin solos:) Good Luck.
I graduated high school the year this came out! One of the best concerts I ever went to was Rod Stewart's Tonight's the Night Tour!!!! He wore a pink suit with a pink tie and pink tennis shoes!!!!! Love me some Rod Stewart!!!!
I saw Rod Stewart before he became well known. He was lead singer with the Jeff Beck (ex Yardbirds) group, along with Aynsley Dunbar ( drummer) and Ronnie Wood ( now Rolling Stones) . They were a stand in group as Procul Harem couldn’t appear due to exhaustion. This was here in Cambridge UK in about 1967. Great for a stand in group.
Rod S' is in the Rock Hall of Fame, two times, as a Solo Artist, and as a member of The Faces. He started in the Sixties, singing for Jeff Beck's band (Beck erectly just died; phenomenal guitarist) He then Joined The Faces, who had been the Small Faces -and toured with them, and did solo work. When the Faces broke up, members joined The Rolling Stones and The Who, in the late 70's. Rod has a tun of hits, and still recording and touring. Roderick David Stewart, born 1945, had a Scottish father, and sometimes used to wear the Stewart tartan as part of his attire, even a scarf or trousers. Rod was also known for some gorgeous woman in his life.
It's not an intro, it's a separate track called "Henry". Pretty much an album filler, the total track time had to be at least 30 minutes so they had to fill it up somehow. Maggie May though, pretty much a perfect song. Mandolin was by Ray Jackson from Lindisfarne, famously mimed to by the legendary John Peel on Top Of The Pops.
@@anyflippingthing Thank you! (And you too, rubroken.) It was nice but not even remotely familiar. It sometimes catches me off guard when a reactor is surprised by classical music or an orchestra or even a violin in the background of a song from the sixties and seventies. I think it’s because many of those musicians were raised listening to music that had those influences and they probably also learned classical pieces when they took music lessons. That’s true of some of today’s younger musicians, I’m sure, but not nearly as many, and it’s not what the music industry is looking for.
Hi again! I've only just discovered you and it was reacting to a Pink Floyd song... I actually bought this album of Rod's when it came out. I was working in the Light Entertainment Department of BBC television in London. I was able to do down to the studio and watched Rod perform...the hair, those tight leopard print leggings, it was unforgettable!!. It's really good reading the comments of others and to know we all feel the same, lucky to have been around in those days! They've filled you in on his amazing career, so I'm sure you'll enjoy more of his extensive catalogue!
Fun fact about Rod. He almost had a career as a professional footballer. He played for Brentford (now in the Premier League ) for a short time back in the 60s.
That VOICE!! Captivating. I have a cat with a deep, gravely meow, told if Rod Stewart was a cat he would sound like him. Cat's name is Thomas Benedict Cumbercat.
Rod Stewart began as Jeff Beck Group's first vocalist, then became a highly acclaimed solo artist for 4 albums (this is the 3rd - "Every Picture Tells A Story" - a masterpiece) before he took a right turn into pop schmaltz and disco. His first 4 albums are all worth hearing. I think this song is about his affair with an older lady that he thought took advantage of him. ETA - those are mandolins at the end.
I saw Rod singing with Brian Auger Trinity and Long John Baldry in "The Steam Packet" -- Might have been just a bit before Jeff, but I'm not really sure. All this Brit musical explosion was happening at that time. Alexis Korner. John Mayall. Peter Green. Clapton. Beck. Jimmy Page. Stones. Beatles. Who. The list in unbelievably endless! I was lucky enough to be a mid-teen in South London when this was all going on.
Rod Stewart was a great songwriter. It’s a mandolin playing. He’s very good. I get this a lot because my name is Margaret. Maggie is short for me and I’ve heard this my whole life.
I was 12/13. Iconic. I danced to that in the local youth club. My whole life ahead of me. Child of the 70s. Wouldn’t change that for the world. Children of the Revolution for sure. Raw and iconic music.
Maggie May was Rods first solo hit record in Australia...... but he was still the lead singer of The Faces at the same time. The Faces did perform Maggie May in live performances and many more of Rods solo efforts. Rod joined The Faces when still called The Small Faces, along with Mick Taylor. Mick Taylor left to join a little unknown group named The Rolling Stones. Ronnie Wood joined The Faces and together with Rod shot them back to world wide recognition........ Wood also joined The Rolling Stones and for many years was lead guitarist for both The Faces and The Stones. Now...... The Small Faces was fronted by legendary guitarist singer Stevie Marriot. Known as a psychedelic rock band, they also pioneered heavy and hard rock, as many psychedelic bands did. Those with a memory might even consider that heavy metal came from psychedelic rock. lol When Marriot left The Small Faces to form Humble Pie, the Small Faces lost their singer and guitarist..... so they hired Taylor on guitar and Rod on vocals. The original band members were already famous, soon they all would be. They changed the band name to The Faces when they realised that neither Mick nor Rod had a small face. lol Sir Rod has a back catologue of over 100 poppy songs for young girls and the top 40 lists. If you want his good stuff try his early soul and blues years.... Good morning Little School Girl. or Street Fighting Man..... a Stones cover. or Downtown Train.... a Tom Waites cover.
Rod Stewart has an amazing catalogue of songs. Listen to them !! Sailing; I don't want to talk about it; You wear it well; handbags and gladrags; forever young; The killing of George....to name a very few
This song was a classic long before you gave it your seal of approval.😀 One of the finest songs of the early 70s and stands the test of time to this day. Rod (and a bit rude about the name?) is Sir Rod Stewart and he's a legend. There are so many to choose from - but my personal favourites are Tonight's the Night and Sailing. Can't go wrong whatever you choose.
I was 12 when I first listened to this song in 1971. My favorite radio station here in New York City, 77WABC played this song in a constant rotation. On 77WABC’s Top 100 of 1971, Maggie May was the #3 song for the year. Great song then and still a great song today.
I believe that's a mandolin?? 🎶🎵 My fave Stewart song is If We Fall In Love Tonight. Don't cry for Rod, he's done alright with the ladies over the years 😉
So cool seeing you react to a song that came out when I was 11 hearing it for the first time, I think I'm starting to feel old now. You look very much like my son, he's 40 now. That's something that you have never heard of the Legend Rod Stewart.
