One of the biggest factors in my decision is that there is a Harley shop in almost every town. Polaris, Honda Motorsports, etc... seem to be hard to find and they are all selling 4x4s and snow cats. I owned two BMWs and the closest shop was 130 miles away. The Harley shop here is about 5 miles from my house.

It’s true, usually pretty easy to find a Harley shop close and along your travels.

I think the biggest point you missed, that combines all those you listed and adds a little more...its an icon. Its iconic. Its not just a motorcycle, it's not just transportation. Its a Harley Davidson. Its known worldwide and coveted worldwide as the gold standard of what cruising bikes should be. You pull up somewhere and get off your bike, someone walks past and says "nice bike...ohh thats a harley, yeah that thing is nice." Even non bike people know the name. Its a name recognized worldwide and that name comes with a certain level of respect from even non riders. Its a name that carries a certain amount of weight and respect.

I love my Harley and i got into them because of the culture and the people, the customization, no matter what i want to do, someone makes it and lastly the availability of dealer support or aftermarket support. I have 3 Harley's how (well the Tri Glide belong to my wife)

Like many, I started riding back when I was in my teens, but on dirt bikes. Then, when I became and adult and found most of the guys I use to ride dirt bikes with were no longer riding, I decided to try a street bike of some kind. My first was a Suzuki Intruder. I only had that for about a year because it was only 800cc’s. I upgraded to a Yamaha Royal Star because it was 1300cc’s. It allowed me and my wife to go on an overnight trip or two on it because of the saddlebags. Next, I realized I was buying metric copies of Harleys and neither sounded or looked as good. So, after a year or so on the Yamaha and discovering I liked two-up trips, I traded for a Harley. That was 17 years ago. I’ve owned 8 Harleys since then and my wife and I have toured 14 states together. We are working on more each year.

I wanted an American bike, I like the feel of it, I like the way it makes me feel out on the road, I like the fact that I could make it my own to fit me. I love my bike and I don't work anymore so now I can really enjoy the bike I have had for 22 years and that makes me even happier 😊

I can tell you really love Harleys and that’s great. I’m happy for you. And I think you’re right about the reasons people buy them, although wrong about “can’t resist them”. Most of us bikers find them antithetical to what we enjoy about a motorcycle. They’re big, heavy, noisy, old technology and of course there’s that lifestyle thing you mentioned. Most of us have no interest in pretending to be Pagans or Hells Angels. I love Triumphs but still have no interest in mimicking The Wild One or the Fonz. And it would be nice if you guys didn’t imagine there was something superior about your bikes, and beyond that, even better if you embraced being part of the larger biker community. I don’t even waste time waving to Harley riders anymore, tired of being ignored. Nobody else does that. And not every single Harley rider either. But it’s enough that it’s not worth putting yourself out there only to get burned by some clown with a death’s head face mask.

I bought my first Harley in 2005. I wanted a American made motorcycle. At the time the Gilroy Indians had gone belly up and so there was only Harley left. I'm still riding Harleys. I agree with your thoughts also!

All of the 5 reasons are valid and I’m on my 6th Harley(‘05 Road King) but they are marketing and living off of history and tradition but it would be great if they would provide support for their older equipment. I had the CPU go out on my RK and I had to find one on eBay because the stock CPU was on back order obsolete until 4/24! I found another one when they couldn’t at the dealer and I’ve been rolling ever since. I love Harleys though.
@Touringmidwest
@Touringmidwest 5 месяцев назад
That is true, when I was working at the dealership for a short time I can confirm that there were several occasions where we couldn’t get parts from Harley due to them being on back order or obsolete, and we’d have to have the customer get something off of eBay or go aftermarket. That’s why so many dealerships are only servicing bikes back to like 2008 or whatever and won’t even touch anything older anymore.

@@Touringmidwest it’s gonna be a booming business for independent shops… I have one near me and I do all the work I can on my own bike. Now the BMW GSA is so full of tech there is no way other than very minor stuff. The Harley though is stone primitive and I love that about her. Two totally different rides but both so great.

The Pan America is the first H-D I've considered owning. Other than to add skid-plates, heated grips or accessories I have no desire to customize a motorcycle. I don't understand H-D tradition, culture, life style or history. All companies have histories. I always feel really bad when riding a noisy motorcycle because I know I'm imposing myself on others. When my car develops an exhaust leak, I feel bad because I look bad. Noise annoys.

Cost is always a determining factor And longivity I dont get swayed by nostalgia Old outdated tech is cool to remind ya of the technology it took to get where we are at right now And the lifestyle and culture is based on racism and superior attitude.

I have both Indian and Harley. Indian out of the box has better suspension and is lighter, making them more maneuverable. They are great bikes, but the fit and finish could be better. The chrome trim could be better, and the aftermarket world could be more robust. I have had four Harleys in my lifetime. I bought a 2022 Ultra Limited last year to do two more 2 up-riding. Fit and finish is just better with Harley Davidson. The parts are of good quality, and the build is solid. Where Indian gets Harley is out-of-the-box comfort. The Indian suspension is far superior to the Harley suspension, making the Indian ride on a cloud. Although the Indian come stock with more chrome parts, the chrome finish sucks. Between the two, I don't see a big difference in power. Both pull well when it comes to power to the road. Harley pulls ahead when it comes to parts availability and dealership locations. When you ride cross country as much as I do, that's a big factor. Love what your doing brother, keep it up!
