This guy's actually looking after us all, without these tests how would we know what's going on inside out filters? I'm cutting all of mine open from now on. (when their done, obviously!)
Thanks for these videos. Oil filters are like the kidneys of the engine. Looks like Mann & Hummel's quality control has tanked, while Fram has really improved. Interesting how things change.
The kidneys don't filter really. That's the liver. Kidneys get rid of excess fluid, waste and help maintain electrolyte balances. Your evap tank and return would probably act more like kidneys. So yeah, oil filter is like the liver, air filter is like lungs exhaust is your intestines and the exhaust tip is your anus lol
Thats crazy that It had a tear in it. You need to be able to be trusting of the manufacturer that the next one you put on your car is going to be made well. even if the one you got before it was good, your next one may not be.
I love Friday as I get to watch your filter Friday. Affinia Group purchased Man and Hummel in 2015, then acquired WIX in 2016. Suspect the changes in quality started after they started merging manufacturing facilities.
At 12:58. 99% at 20 and the other at 99.9% at 40 microns. I wonder does the cheaper filter filter 100% at 40? Or 99.999999% I mean that is a double size particle. Personally, I want the smallest particles filtered because that means it catches all the big ones also.
I know it's very confusing and doesn't make sense, Check out the RockAuto links below the video and see what it says on their website. I'm just quoting their numbers.
@@WhipCityWrencher Yes sir. The 40 rating on the Distance is a no go for me. Bosch doesn't show the distance anymore. If you search their site, all the distance filter links are dead.
@@GT-mn3bx Yep, starting Next year, I might stop posting micron and filter media info. It ticks me off, I find a posted micron rating on a website only to find later they deleted or changed it.
@@WhipCityWrencher Or just say at the current time this is what the site says...at least Wix Reg/Napa Gold has stayed 21 and 10K for as long as I know. Not so for the XP/Platinum which used to be 20 or 21. Now 30-35 if you call them.(Not published for the latter anymore.
@@GT-mn3bx Bosch stopped making the "DISTANCE +" oil filter. I don't know why. Personally, I have no use for the so-called "extended life" oil filters, since I change oil & filter at 5,000 miles.
I had a Baldwin filter that had a bigger tear in the same area as this Bosch filter. I noticed both the Bosch and the Baldwin that I cut open had shallow end caps where the filter media is glued. Maybe this is why they developed a tear during the manufacture process. I have noticed filters made in Thailand, Korea, Vietnam and China don't have this messy glue deal going on. All of the Napa and Wix filters that I have cut open have been very well made without any of the excess glue all over. Both of these filters are owned by the same company Mann Hummel. Maybe it is the plant where they are made that makes the difference.
Who cares if the filter has a lot of messy glue. Looks aren't important, as long as there's more than enough glue to safely hold and seal the end caps to the filter media.
@@bobby1970 You're right Bob. As long as he glue isn't covering most of the filter element. Just makes me wonder how carefull they are in the manufacturing process.
@@davidsacco4860 for a filter that retails for $4 what can you expect for that money. People.who manufacture these are probably getting paid minimum wage or even sweat shop wage. If you are looking for a good quality filter and assembled very neatly, I would conside buying the $10-15 ones...
well, that's not good, I was going to buy a bunch of those on sale at rockauto, but this video made me change my mind, also I notice some rust on the base plate under the anti-drain back valve, I wonder if the media is the same thickness? if they are, It is only branding and marketing. thank you for the video, you prevented me to do a big mistake.
@@WhipCityWrencher wow unbelievable, they sell this filter as a premium filter and you get the same media as a cheap filter, yes the can is thicker and the base is thicker but have you ever seen a can burst? or a plate with a stripped thread? I personally never saw that in 45 years even with a cheap filter, I will follow your recommendation and go with a Fram ultra synthetic. dzięki!
@@budblack3588 You really can't go wrong with the Fram Ultra. If you have some time here's an interesting read. bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/would-you-all-like-to-see-iso-4548-12-oil-filter-lab-testing-comparison-efficiency-capacity-pressure-vs-flow-bubble-point-and-burst.334882/
I just changed my oil and removed one of the Bosch premium filters that i purchased and installed and cut it open. My filter does not look like this on the inside. No metal crimp on filter media and NO bypass/relief valve at all. It is very disappointing that I did not get what I thought I was purchasing. I now have several of these that I am not sure I have the guts to use.
I would open another and see what it looks like, also check the date codes. No bypass valve? Maybe your engine already has a bypass valve and doesn't need it.
@@WhipCityWrencher I actually called Bosch. They said that the car manufacturer doesn't call for a bypass on this application. Maybe there is one already in place. However I was looking for a metal clip which the filter did not have. Again thank you for your videos and for your correspondence. It is much appreciated.
The extended D filter looks to be fine esp for the approx $6 it costs. The std filter is ok gor 3k mile oil changes & the D longer distance filter I max st 5k oil change. But to say you would not use the longer distance filter yourself seems extreme because gor $6 it’s h go ot silicone gasket & ADV along with nice metal core, baseplate, case & decent amount/sq “ of what seems to be decent type/design filter Lego’s too. On the cheaper $4 filter,I think that Nick in the pleat was not something that happens often so on avg I’d say that filter is ok gor 3k mile oil changes .
This is an older video and the oil filter prices have changed some, but both filters are fine to use. I shouldn't have stated my personal use. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take the D3325 filter. For my personal use, I like filters that have a backing to them, metal or polymer screens. Thanks for your feedback!👍
I was using a Fram Ultra XG8A. Right now I'm using a Purolator Boss. I like the strong filter media on the Boss, but I think next oil change I'll go back to the Fram Ultra. I will be getting an oil analysis after each oil filter change to see if there are any differences.
Surely can't see where 3 more pleats can hold so many more grams of dirt that they advertise? They sure do a good job of advertising for this, I would of felt good putting this on a sister of mine I don't see for about 8 months and change her oil. I have a friend who tops off her oil for me , where she lives... Heck just as well off with a Super Tech 10,000 miler, if you ask me... Great Videos and Truth revealed again by WCW 👍.....Thanx; Jethro
The Bosch oil filters are disappointing, Bosch oil filters are usually ranked in the top three filters on many of the lists you see online. From what I am seeing on several reviews the STP filters are very high quality, I have used STP oil filters before and may continue in the future. I was really surprised to see that both Bosch filters had the stamped steel spring.
did you happen to find the blue one's filtering percentage % for 20 microns? I"m just looking for apples to apples here. I me the different microns just throws everything off unless it means something to you. I mean what, they could say 99.999999999% at 100 microns? lol
It's confusing to me also. If you go to their website it looks to me the Premium has a better micron rating but they say the DistancePlus traps more dirt., which doesn't make sense to me. Here are the links to their micron ratings. It seems to me if they want to confuse people, then their micron ratings are probably not that great. www.boschautoparts.com/en/auto/filters/premium-oil-filters www.boschautoparts.com/en/auto/filters/distanceplus-oil-filters
The premium is able to trap more smaller particles. But because of that, it also clogs up faster. The distance allows more of the smaller particles through, allowing the filter to take longer to clog up. This is how all extended performance filters work.
Exactly. It is marketing. They don't even have Distance on their site anymore. The Premium shows 20 micron. I have ran those but they are double the cost of Wix Reg/Napa Gold at 21 micron.
yeah bud your not going to be able to see diffrent micron ratings of the filter paper with your eyes your talking about 20microns to 40 microns 1 micron is 1000 mm so thats incredible small dust is like 80microns
I was just simply pointing out they looked and felt the same. I'm not totally convinced about what they state the micron rating is. In the oil filter world, 20 to 40 microns is a big difference. Thanks for your feedback!
Man i would try to get a refund. I know you didn't use it but fluid takes the path of least resistance so that tear could turn into a bigger hole which could negate the filtering of the oil. At least let them know they may do a recall or at least i would hope they would. Great video though.
