the media on the GKI is thicker than the bosch.. so that makes up quite a bit.

The Toyota dealer in Westbury, NY left old oil in my Gen 2 Prius crankcase. When I went to complain, the manager said they don't desludge and "Have a nice day." What scumbags all these dealers are.

The GKI seems to be a pretty well made filter and I do appreciate how they were prudent wit hthe glue, Bosch is supposed to be a premium brand but seems to lack in a few areas like thinner media, leaf spring and a rubber ADBV. I do not like the rough side of those holes touching the media on the GKI, though. If forced to choose, though I'd stick with the Bosch and make sure I changed my oil at 5K on the dot, but if given a choice I'd pick something else like a purolator PureOne.
@SlikLizrd
@SlikLizrd 10 месяцев назад
The Bosch oil filter pictured here is their "economy" model -- NOT representative of the Bosch Premium model at all. Notice that the Coil Spring goes with the Thicker Cannister. When manufacturers switched to the thinner cannister (less waste, lighter weight, environment), thye found that the Coil Spring distorted the cannister, causing failures. They designed the stamped-steel "Retainer", which locates the filter element and holds it in place -- it's cheaper and more effective than the Coil Spring, and, technically, it's not really a "spring" at all -- but people still call it a spring, anyways. Even Fram calls their retainer a spring. America has become a nation of slow learners.

Yeah, Mark, but it doesn't do any good unless you know the Flow Rates of the Matching Oil Pump at different RPMs. No sense in paying a premium price for a Hi-Flow oil filter if the pump doesn't deliver the desired Gallons-Per-Minute.

It's double the price because that bosch is coming from Rock Auto which you have to add $6 shipping if you don't have a bunch of other stuff included... they have basic Premium Guards for $1.77 that easily blow away this Bosch.

YEP. Micron Rating is what oil filtering is all about. These 2 filters show NO Micron Rating. The Bosch Premium Oil Filters (NOT this "Workshop" model) have a 20-Micron rating, a Silicone ADBV, and are more than adequate for a 5,000-mile OCI.

The GKI looks identical to the Philtop filters. Same weird bypass, thread size stamped on the base, same inlet hole configuration, same coil spring that's thinner in the middle. It's not a Premium Guard, that much I can tell. Little bit lower quality but not bad. Looks quite similar to the PG filters but not bad. Would have liked to see a silicone anti-drainback at that price considering you can get a Proformer (NAPA made by PG) with a silicone anti-drainback for around the same price.

The GKI filter media looks like it was assembled better than the Bosch and it has my preferred coil spring but it has less filter media than the Bosch. I've never heard of GKI before. Neither has a silicone anti-drainback valve. I'd pass on both and get a different filter.

Disappointed in the Bosch. That name used to mean quality.
@SlikLizrd
@SlikLizrd 10 месяцев назад
It still does. The Bosch model being tested here is their LOWEST quality oil filter. I would not use or recommend EITHER of these oil filters due to the Nitrile Rubber ADBV -- The Bosch PREMIUM Oil Filter is of a better quality, with a 20-Micron rating that's RARE in the oil-filtering bidness. Notice the thicker cannister-coil spring combination -- The coli springs were used often with the thicker cannisters, many switching to the stamped-steel retainer when the thinner cannisters were introduced. The coil springs could not be used for the thinner cannisters as the thin cannisters would distort and leak. The Retainer distributes the force out to the edges of the cannister -- for a lighter filter with a leak-proof cannister seal.
@donwyoming1936
@donwyoming1936 9 месяцев назад
The funny thing is the flat spring is superior because it helps elimates tilting of the filter in the can, but everyone likes the inferior coil spring. 🤠
@SlikLizrd
@SlikLizrd 9 месяцев назад
YES -- and NO !! First, it's technically not a SPRING. Real springs (like the Coil Spring shown here) are made of expensive "spring steel". It's a RETAINER -- (no springing action) that holds the Filter Element securely in it's place. The Coil Spring is not "inferior" -- It's used on filters that have SHORTER elements, because the Retainers are too short to hold the shorter elements. Also, notice that the Filter with the Coil Spring has the thicker Cannister, made necessary by the use of the Coil Spring. The Retainer allowed for a thinner-walled cannister, thus reducing wasted materials. As we could see in this video, the Coil Spring is used with the shorter element (less filtering area), and the Retainer is used for the longer element. This is true regardless of brand or price. One "spring" is no better than the other -- they just have different characteristics, geared to element size requirements. Also, note that the Bosch oil filter in this video is of their "Jobber" (cheapest) model, which is NOT indicative of the quality/performance of the Bosch "Premium" model, which has a 20 - Micron rating, Retainer, and a Silicone ADBV.

Great video Whip. Between the two I would have to go with the GKI. China's QC by far is better than Mexico' s QC. Never really been a fan of Bosch. Their filters are over priced and way over rated. I think that I will keep using Napa/Wix filters. They have not failed me since the early eighties.

Bosch for the win. It has more filter area and thinner media so as not to unnecessarily restrict oil flow. More thread grooves make no difference in functionality. China has EARNED their bad reputation for poor-quality products and I avoid it as much as possible. Bosch may farm out their production to Mexico, but it does so with strict specifications to ensure the quality expectations of the consumer are met. GKI? Who TH is that? Go ahead and take that chance if you're willing to suffer the potential consequences.
@JamesMcMullen-wj8rs
@JamesMcMullen-wj8rs 10 месяцев назад
My only concern is the lack of the brand name and description on the packaging and filter. How do you know if it is genuine GKI or a fake. I agree that the cartridge should have been wound so that the rough edges of the holes be on the inside. That could have been easily manufactured correctly
@randywl8925
@randywl8925 10 месяцев назад
More filter area means oil will flow through the media at a slightly slower rate.
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 10 месяцев назад
That kinda depends on the quality of the filter material, some have a lot of tiny holes.
@randywl8925
@randywl8925 10 месяцев назад
@@WhipCityWrencher Oh definitely. It would be interesting to do a flow test..... Something simple like gravity feed. Cut a 1 inch or 1 1/2 diameter circle from each media. Using JB weld, glue the filter media to the end of a 2 or three foot long piece of PVC pipe. Fill the pipe to the top with oil and count the seconds it takes to either drain the entire pipe, or to fill to a predetermined level in a clear, graduated measuring cup. .....or a shot glass, I mean hey, it's a Saturday night. 😁
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 10 месяцев назад
@@randywl8925 That's a great idea, I think I would use some kind of clamp so that I could reuse it instead of glue, quicker to set up too. I'll try and make something like that this winter when I have more time. Thanks for the idea👍

GKI has a little bit less media but the thickness overcomes that IMO.. but also the build of this generic GKI just embarrasses this bosch which looks like it was made in a third grade class in mexico. , and there is no way that bosch is 99% @ 30 IMO with that paper thin material.
