Croatia's Peljesac Bridge is a prerequisite to enter the borderless Schengen Area. In doing so, however, the project risks undermining Bosnia’s tiny coastline.

The height of the bridge is not questionable simply because there is no sea depth for large ships ... for safe passage. The only option would be for Croatia to dig the seabed in its waters ... but that will never happen LOL

@scottwarthin1528
@scottwarthin1528 3 года назад
Seriously though: San Francisco Bay Area wouldn't be the international trade power house that it is today if the Golden Gate Bridge was 12 meters lower than it is today. That mere 12 meter difference determines what long term future Bosnia has of having a significant port or not. Containerization dominates every country's future... which sucks. Its like I'm the only 1 making comments who thinks this is a very real, very grave problem for the long term future of the Balkans. Unfortunately, he did not figure out that such large ship could not turn inside the tiny and shallow Neum bay.
@HL.208
@HL.208 3 года назад
I am Bosniak myself. As far I I can notice, the whole political and media crap about this bridge is total stupidity. Neum is small town of 5.000 people. They ALL live by tourism and want to stay like that. Neum sea area IS NOT suitable for sea port. If there is ever gonna be a big sea port it would destroy natural habitat and tourism of that area, and nobody wants that. So, Neum WILL NEVER BE a sea port. Simple as that. There is port of Ploce, as is mentioned in this video. Bosnia and Croatia signed a special treaty upon independence so Bosnia can use port of Ploce to transport goods from there to its teritory. Same as all people in Neum live from tourism, all people in Ploce live by revenues and transport of Bosnian goods in their port. So, port of Ploce is enough for sea transportation of Bosnian goods to Bosnia. Even Croatian membership did not change anything regarding this. When it comes to transport of people from one part of Croatia to Dubrovnik region, it caused anxiety to both countries, because traffic jams and border checks were just impossible to handle. Neum is very small town, it has too many tourists who stay in town, plus people who are doing transit from Ploce area to Dubrovnik. It is just too much with 4 border checks in distance of 20 km. Peljesac bridge will be good for Croatia to cpnnrct its two landmasses and for Neum and Bosnia to give themselves a break and invest in tourism in Neum more. There is already ongoing construction just northern of Neum where Bosnian authorrities in Federation are biilding a tunnel that will shorten distance between town of Stolac and Neum. This will bring many many more Bosnian tourists to Neum. And with Peljesac bridge in function Neum will be able to enjoy full potential of tourism and not be overcrowded always by cars that are just transpassing to Dubrovnik. Both, Bosnian and Croatian, politicians are just using this matter to promote their own agendas, same as they use anything else. Ordinary people in both countries are totally aware of potential of this bridge for both countries and do not waste their time arguing about nothing.

As a Civil engineering student with background in Bridge engineering, I can say that the height of the bridge (55m) is within its rights for the safe passage of freight under it the longest bridge in Europe (Øresund between Malmö and København, which I recently did a dissertation on) is 57m above sea level and has a sea lane under it (even if most are diverted around it) also I would assume that the 67m of the Golden Gate bridge is in line with Americans codes of practice rather than Eurocodes hence the discrepancy
@kolobara08

As far as I know, the height of the bridge is not an issue but the shallow water underneath the highest point of the bridge. Yes, it's tall enough but ships can't sail it so the height becomes irrelevant and useless and that's the whole issue with this bridge.

Almost nobody in Bosnia and Herzegovina pays attention to this anymore, so this issue is much more relevant for Chinese-EU relations due to Chinese involvement in construction works. Secondly, Bosnia and Herzegovina has FINALLY decided to connect its Adriatic coast with inner BiH with building a modern highway (you can even see it around 3:06) that will bypass Croatia. So, Croatia is bypassing BiH, and BiH is bypassing Croatia. For your information, the main connection between the BiH coast and the rest of BiH was through Croatia (you leave BiH, you enter Croatia, you leave Croatia and then you enter BiH again). And finally, if you wonder: Bosnia and Croatia are super friends and something like cousin/brother countries. So no drama here. :) Croatia is the main EU entry point for Bosnia and Herzegovina and on the other hand a significant portion of BH population are actually Croats, particularly in this part of the country where the bridge is being built.

@@user-gt1uy9cj6g you have to separate diplomatic relations between the two countries and internal issues in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Firstly, the wire is gone. Secondly, the case of two schools under one roof is not a Bosnian product: it was proposed by international community (OSCE) in early 2000's and unfortunately implemented by ruling political parties in Bosnia. Let's not forget that is one side of the story: many people are absolutely against this, two years ago you had protests in central Bosnia organized by Croat and Bosniak kids who didn't want to see their school separated. And finally, relations between Bosniaks and Croats are not homogenous, they are good in one part of the country and not so good in another part of the country. Croatian guy here. Look the Pelješac Bridge project has no alternative. I'm not defending Croatian politicians, they are nepotistic, unskilled and often prone to corruption, but compared to Bosnian polticians, be they Bosniaks, Croats or Serbs, our guys are honest and hardworking people, Bosnian and Herzegovinian politicians represent probbably the most incompetent and corrupt rulling class in Europe, excluding places like Moldova, and since they insist on three different political stances, there is just no disscussion with them. If Bosnia and Herzegovina collapses at a certain point then that will make this entire project pointless, since Neum is populated almost exclusivley by Croats and is located in the Croat-mayjority part of B&H, so it would get annexed by Croatia, also before someone starts to rage I'm not calling for Bosnia to be dismembered, I'm just saying that that is a plausable reality for a country as dysfunctional as Bosnia. But, anyways ships will be able to pass below the bridge, eventough Neum isn't a large port, but connectig the exclaved territory of the old Republic of Ragusa with the rest of Croatia for us Croatians has no alternative.

Your very right! But remember how Bosnia got to this point. The way Bosnia was set up after the war is the root of the problem! Also if a new war starts in Bosnia it will have huge negative impact on croatia, like it did in the 90's. Also if croatia does try to annex the territory it will lead to countless more bloodshed like in the 90's. The problem with that part of the world is that religion dictates loyalty! Bosnia being upset by this is dumb. 1. The bridge has a max height of 55m and the tallest cargo ships are around 38m (including the section of hull that is underwater). 2. There are no major seaports (including Neum) on the Bosnian coast. 3. The area in question is too shallow for cargo shipping and hasn't been dredged. This is basically like telling your neighbor that they can't have a pool in their yard because your cat might drown... but you have never actually owned a cat.

For instance, even headline is incorrect since it is insinuating that Croatia is gonna block BiH although there wouldn't be construction of a dam but transparent bridge whose ceiling of 55 meters has been requested from the BiH experts and complied in bridge design. There are also some other inaccuracies but I don't have time or will to go further in-depth analysis.

Current ships can get under it but 50 years from now may be a different story which is the main problem with it. Especially since Bosnia has future plans on making the port bigger which means bigger ships. Shouldve been an underwater tunnel and this wouldnt be an issue but of course dumbass politicians in the EU think cheaper is always better. Bosnian politicians are also being retarded cause if they went to a table with Croatian officials to seek a deal where they could help them fund the project if they would make it an underwater tunnel/bigger bridge than that would've helped unify the Bosnia and Croatia as neighbors and unify the Bosniaks and Croatians living in Bosnia. Sadly current government leaders around the world are the most greedy dumbasses who are litterally setting up stages of conflict which will lead too wars as they intentionally divide peoples.(Imo on purpose cause war is profitable) Edit: Apparently its too shallow too even build a port there some are saying. @@Ffhh391 Croats do live in Neum, and in entirety of western Herzegovina, they are of Croatian origin, they identify themselves as Croats, in all sports they celebrate Croatia's win, and don't care at all about Bosnian games, etc etc... The reason why BiH is so confusing is because it isn't a normal country as most other countries (Italians live in Italy, Germans in Germany, Russians in Russia...), but rather it is a mix of 3 peoples (Croats, Serbs, and muslims called "Bosniaks") and artificially drawn border where nobody is happy with the solution. Why this way in particular? Because in 1995, the US and EU wouldn't allow fully muslim country in the heart of Europe, so they draw borders to include Croats and Serbs into the mix so that everybody in this "country" remains angry and poor. (This is the simplest possible explanation of the situation)

For instance how exactly is Croatia gonna "block" Bosnia-herzegovina by building bridge with ceiling of 55 meters above sea-level and five 250 meters wide passages, something that is extremely large for all Adriatic region let alone tiny and very shallow waters Neum bay?! Author is giving false impression as if Croatia is building another Hoover dam, not the bridge with large passages intended for maritime traffic! Also, he doesn't mention that Croatia and BiH have conducted negotiations for over 10 years and agreed upon bridge construction details! Also, Croatia is building this bridge on undeniably it's own territory including internal waters! There are also some other issues.

We care about our half of it, the Republic of Srpska. Right now, Republic of Srpska (literally: Serb Republic) is as much dependent on Serbia, as it is on federal government in Sarajevo - maybe even more dependent on Serbia at the moment. Serbs and Croats couldn't be annexed into their mother states due to foreign intervention of mainly NATO states with USA as it's spearhead, ending forced into cohabitation in some (con)federal inorganic state with muslim relative majority. We, and Croats too, perceive Serbia and Croatia respectively as our states. Croatian cantons in western and southern parts of Federation are interested in their own affairs with benefit of Croats in mind, and we in Republic of Srpska do pretty much the same. To be completely honest, we do want growth, development and peace for everyone - but never at the expense of our own people. We do not perceive the federal government in Sarajevo as our own, and the weaker its grip on us is, the merrier we are. Bosnia is a dysfunctional shithole not because of the war and God knows what - it is what it is because we are continually making it that way.
