@@zapantalambdaanything, and try it both ways, before and after the HM-2, it surprisingly gets along really well with a wide variety of pedals.

J Steen the angry driver has an angry Charlie in it. About half my board is pretty consistent, the rest gets rotated a lot so I can try new stuff. I’ll do a board rundown sometime.

I'm not a tone snob. I only have one pedal. A Boss HM-2. I've had a few Boss pedals and tube drivers before and whatnot, so I'm not a total noob. But for me, there is 'good sound' and 'bad sound'. Sorry, 'tone'. The Boss HM-2 is a bit of a one trick pony. Sure you can adjust the amount of 'trick' but really, sometimes it works in the chain, most times it doesn't - it's just too much. All I know is, that I can get the 'exact' sound of my Top 5 Guitarist - Tony Iommi. You do need good humbuckers to just get it there, but even single coils come very very close with that amount of saturation/distortion/overdrive. Yeah, I know those are all slightly different thngs, but I use this pedal when my amp is already overdriven/saturated/distorted. This pedal kicks it in to overdrive with a very very sweet and harmonically rich sound. No surprise there. That's what this effect does: adds harmonics with some clipping on top, which effectively makes it a compressor as well when on full tilt. No great revelations there. Talking of Revelations. My Revelation 335 with its Entwistle Alnico humbuckers are just about the purest and closest to Iommi and his 335 (even though he played a Strat on their first album - Black Sabbath - for a lot of the tracks - I know, I know...) I can see how this pedal would be great for all the black death metal stuff. But this is an area that few people have commented on till now. Well, I did a while back. I've always said this is a Black Sabbath Tony Iommi Replicator on a few guitar vids on youtube. So +pcbullets and Ryan I totally agree with you both. This is a real Black Sabbath/Tony Iommi machine. Even though the early Sabs records were drop tuned to C# and the ones after that drop D (with still a bit o C#), this pedal just gives beautiful low end harmonics that are very rich. It clips and it compresses and so does a pretty good impression of a small valve amp cranked up to max. It does sound pretty bad on most chains and guitars though, I'll admit that. And when it does work, it's not the most versatile thing in the world. You will know within 5 seconds whether it's gonna work out for you. So I understand why a lot of people say it sounds like a POS or an angry swarm of bees. I was going to sell this pedal when I saw the price of them secondhand. But then I plugged it in and thought about it. Yes, very limited. Usually doesn't work. But when you get that right guitar and that right guitar setting, well, I defy anyone to not say I haven't nailed Tony Iommi's guitar sound from the first few Sabbath albums. It's about as identical as you can get. And this is going through a small Fender Mustang v1 modelling amp as well. This pedal gives the 'edge' that the amp can't. Or maybe I'm just deaf. I should be. I listened to more Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi than practically any other sane man - for 30 years. So that could be the case. Then again, it could just be that my ear is trained well enough to know what I'm talking about. I'm more of an audio engineer than a tone chasing guitarist, but I have to agree with the both of you here: Yes, this is instant Black Sabbath - just add water, er, I mean, plug in your guitar. Try using a tone on your amp where the sound is already half way overdriven or saturated. This pedal (HM-2) does the rest.

@ SORRY - I meant "Iommi and his SG", not "335". As if anyone was in any doubt what guitar the dark master played! (bet you didn't know he played a bloody strat on their first Black Sabbath album though - who knows, maybe the rumour is even true)

It was on Iommi's board during the 80's. That's one reason it's such a "Cult Classic," if I'd have to guess. It's very much in my Top 10 Pedals (not just distortion). PS: Love the Arabian vibes on the noodling at the end.

Exactly what I was thinking . It sounds like he´s got both pedals going in the front. Use the return It sounds much better . Then try a metal zone pedal or similar and set up same way

Sven Nyström True, the HM-2 kinda spans both and I ended up with a Stockholm band:) I'll blame old age:) In Flames is probably a better example, but for good old buzzsaw Entombed is my go to jam.

POLLOTROM I think my favorite is an orange one called mega distortion. Keep the distortion low and the gain boost cranked up on it. In the end I think it sounds similar to metal zone that way, but better tone? Metalzone is like a swiss army knife of distortion pedals and hard to beat. BOSS'S newer and expensive pedals are the best though. Forget what they are called. Something like DSX or ODX. Has an x in it I think.

I agree. I run mine with a DOD 7 band EQ after it into my amp. The EQ brings the angry bees into a harmony and I get the tightest distortion I've ever heard. Very very close to Dime's sound. That's why I kept my MZ in the chain.

Actually, without the EQ it's got enough onboard EQ controls to stand on it's own. The EQ for me gives me more mid scoop and at the same time I get enough mids to maintain the harmonics for my pinch harmonics, etc. Hard to explain. It's better if you try it and tweak it for yourself. I've actually forgotten to stomp on my EQ and it took me a bit to hear the difference, but there is a difference.
