Here is my personal comparison between the Boss CE-2w and the TC.Electronics SCF Gold+ with a little help of my Roland JX-8P and 3P, Modal Electronics Argon8X, Arturia Drumbrute Impact, and a Waldorf Zarenbourg Desktop Module. Other supporting roles were played by Korg KR-55, Chase Bliss Generation Loss MkII, OBNE Rever and a Korg Drumlogue. Wait for the Outro, when the Chase Bliss meets Supertramp.

Nothing beats the og vintage analog modulation units. These sound alright though, and better than most plug-ins.

Very helpful comparison, thanks! In my opinion the TC Electronics suits my idea of wide stereo chorus on synth sound best.

I would have liked the Boss Chorus to be the ultimate chorus for synthesizers, but the input sensitivity always makes me reach for the SCF ;-)

Thanks once again for pointing out differences that can be good to know, especially if you want to use them with synths😊

This is a very informative review. I was looking for a chorus/flanger pedal for my analog synthesizer and saw some reviews but was having trouble finding videos of it being used on a synth. The SCF is probably the only stereo analog flanger pedal available new today, but all I could find were reviews about the chorus and one word "useless" for the flanger mode, so it was very helpful to hear it in use on a synth. I got a DC-2W, which is a reissue of the SDD-320 Dimension he apparently used, to sound like Ryuichi Sakamoto in the 80's, but got lost in the maze of flanger selection. Sakamoto used a Roland SBF-325, though it seems he always ran the Dimension and SBF through it when he played his Prophet-5. I got a strymon orbit, but it was not suitable for synth use because the highs were attenuated when the effect was turned on... I am about to try a BOSS BF-3, but the SCF flanger mode is worth considering... As for the chorus, the SCF seems to have a more honest and extended sound than the CE-2W, which is a preferable result. Some sources say Sakamoto used TC and MXR phasers and distortion. I wish there were more review videos like yours that let us hear the sound of a guitar pedal through a synth. There are new analog synths on the market with no effects, but the rack effects that used to come with the synths are extinct. Definitely, there is a magic that can't be created by plug-ins. thanks from japan.

you´re welcome. the MXR Flanger M117 is on my testing list as well. and yes, the experience with trying and fideling around with pedals can not be reproduced with plu-in´s. There is definitely a magic 🙂

I´m not sure if it´s still available. It was only for a short time listed on the Thomann Shop. I´ve got mine from Waldorf directly to test the Software

@@knobsswitches wow, very cool that Waldorf offered you such an opportunity! I would love to buy one if I could find it, not because I lack quality sounds, but because they succeeded in 2004 when they produced Zarenbourg to reproduce the sound of Wurlitzer, Rhodes and others so real. Only out of respect for them!

The SCF chorus sounds better to me. It's higher-fidelity, cleaner sounding and less muddy, doesn't dull the high-end as much. The BOSS is lovely, but it kind of makes everything sound like an splodgey opaque wash in the midrange. The stereo effect of the SCF sounds wider too. The DC-2W has a lovely stereo effect, but it kills a lot of the bass, so I'd probably only use it on a high lead, in a mix.

Yes, i agree. as a boss fan boy, i really wanted to find the dc-2w better. but it's not ;-)

Between a good vst Chorus plug-in and a pedal would you hear any difference?
@knobsswitches
@knobsswitches Год назад
Difficult question. Personally, I hardly ever use plug-ins, because my focus is solely on playing the instruments and it's a lot of fun to hook up different FX pedals to hear what happens. But if the focus is on music production, I think you wouldn't hear the difference between a plug-in and a pedal chorus on a new Billie Eilish or Taylor Swift single.

In a small batch it was released in Germany. I saw an advert on Thomann back in the days. But this is actually a prototype from Waldorf

This is a _seriously_ flawed comparison. The CE-2w is NOT a stereo chorus!! when both outputs have plugs inserted the B output is the direct out signal and the A output is the 100% wet signal. In this test when the CE-2w is activated you're hearing a dry signal in one ear and the wet signal in the other. The TC Electronic is a "true" stereo chorus, on the other hand, which is why it sounds better in this comparison.

I compared the pedals, cause both are interesting for Keyboards and both are re-issues of classic vintage pedals. I don´t think that the TC Sound better. but it´s a matter of choice. The TC could handle Line Signals better. That was my personal result.

I didn't say there was a problem with you comparing the pedals, I said there's a problem with your methodology. You could have mentioned that you're comparing a mono chorus to a stereo chorus. You could have compared the CE-2w to the left channel only mono version of the TC. Now the comparison just doesn't make any sense because no-one would actually use the CE-2w like you're using it in the video.

@@electronworkflow9959 from the boss website: "The CE-2W’s Standard mode faithfully recreates the classic CE-2 chorus sound, and adds an expansive new sound field with stereo output, which was unavailable in the mono CE-2. CE-1 mode fully reproduces the stereo chorus and vibrato sounds of the legendary CE-1, with the addition of variable chorus depth not available in the original pedal". my review still makes sense to me

Chill the fuck out, Jesus Christ. This isn't a peer reviewed scientific journal. It's a comparison of two vintage reissue chorus pedals in a musical application. You sound like one of those people that care more about gear than actual making music. Calm down dude

@@knobsswitches I honestly don't know if you're being intentionally ignorant or you don't actually understand what I'm saying. Go listen to the B output of the CE-2W - it is a DRY unaffected signal. The Boss marketing speak is misleading because this pedal is meant for guitar players with amplifiers in rooms being mic'ed. In guitar player language "stereo setup" can mean having two amplifiers next to each other where one gets a dry signal from an effect and the other gets a wet signal. This is not true stereo what everyone else in synth and studio land understand it to be. Read the CE-2w (or CE-1, which is also not true stereo) manual if you are still in doubt. On the other hand if you actually think having an effect like chorus makes sense on a synth where the wet and dry signals are hard-panned and often 180 degrees out of phase with each other, then ok, I guess some people like to listen to a completely incoherent stereo image, can't fault taste. But as it stands your comparison in my opinion is misleading for viewers and it's weird that you don't even seem to admit that this comparison has some serious footnotes.
