What an interesting and informative presentation. It's odd that the ES8 doesn't have a 'polarity' change, so "on" can mean "on" on the amp. I respect the presentation style, information and moreover the work involved in making these videos. Really well done. This video has also given me comfort that the ES-8 will help with all my amps!

One of the difficulties I find is building a loop particular to an output, in a dual rig situation. You've shown options between different types of amps with the control channels, but confusing if you want to keep your control settings for one amp, and have the same loop selector control channels (or do anything) on the second output. It's easy enough to do with the ES-8 editor (computer app) but I wouldn't know where to start with the switcher editor. Appreciate your vids!

Thanks for your video's they helped A LOT. I had a devil of a time updating my ES-5 and getting an interface to work. I tried the Roland UM-ONE interface to update and it did not work! Ended up using an off-brand interface to update,(midi in to out and out to in) but then it needed the Roland UM-ONE (midi in to in and out to out) interface to get it to talk with the editor software. Roland can be such a pain with this stuff (backwards sometimes or off by one digit) but when you get it talking and walking it sure works great. I'll like my ES-5 better with the editor for sure. I'm also controlling it with a Morningstar MC3, that sucker plugged right in with it's software.

Similar here with ES8 and a PirateMidi Bridge 6 controller. I am hitting some roadblocks with ES8 & Bridge6 acting as Pilot/CoPilot. Basic PC messages are no problem. CC messages are hit and miss for me. I am currently up to 14 midi devices/pedals using 14 channels of midi. There will come a day when I will need MORE than 16 channels. How to deal with that? Connecting the pedals is rather simple, I doubt I'll make a video on it. Just connect one pedal to each loop, or if you have more pedals than you have loops, you can connect multiple pedals in series to a loop. Just be aware that when the loop is activated, all pedals in that loop will be active.

Hello Metal Man Bun! I'm considering getting a Boss ES-8 although my Laney Iron Heart has 5 on board channels/fx (Clean, Rhythm, Lead, Reverb and Boost) and is controlled by the Iron Heart footswitch via MIDI and thats just one MIDI output on the back of my amp of course. My question is can I control these on board channels/fx on my amp using the ES-8 even though there is only 1 MIDI port to control them (if that makes sense). Great vids!
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 4 года назад
I would suggest looking at the Laney manual to see if you can control the amp via MIDI. If the control pedal uses a 5 pin MIDI connector, I would assume it does, but I've never used the amp. I don't want to give you any advice.

Thanks Man Bun ... I have an interesting one for you though. I consider myself a semi-expert at the ES8 running 3 Strymon Midi units (Mobius, Timeline and Big Sky) along with a Ramble Kismet, and I am amazed at the versatility these 4 pedals bring. But one sound that cannot be "emulated" is a fender amp overdriven. When buying a Fender De Ville thought I would have a great addition. The De Ville has a footswitch that offers two states beyond normal. They are "Drive" and "More Drive". When trying to control from CTL 1/2, the amp defaults to the "More Drive" state and I can't seem to get to the "Drive" state through any ES-8 settings. I have tried mono cables, stereo cables, TRS ... all combinations of CTL 1/CTL 2 on-off settings etc. Any words of wisdom?
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 4 года назад
It's pretty tough without being there with the amp. Did it come with a footswitch? Does it have a TRS or TS connector? Can you measure the connectivity between the "pins" on the connector of the footswitch? Just some thoughts to start.
@mikecrepin7198
@mikecrepin7198 4 года назад
@@ManBunMetalHead Thanks for that. Yes it comes with a standard foot-switch that lets you switch between the three states (Off or clean, "Drive, and "More Drive") as you can manually on the amp. I am sure it is a Voltage/Logic Level thing but thought that it could be controlled through the different CTL switch settings in the GUI. I have reached out to Fender to see if anyone else has asked about it. IF & when I get resolution, I will share with you in case you get asked again ... love your ES vids. They shortened my learning curve when I first got the ES-8.
@mikecrepin7198

Should have mentioned that the cable that connects the Fender Foot Switch to the Fender With input seems to only be a mono 1/4", and not Stereo or TRS.
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 4 года назад
Being that the connector is TS makes me think would be tough to control with the ES-8. Like you mentioned there has to be some sort of logic involved, rather than a simple on/off switch. If you come up with anything, I'd definitely be interested to hear about it.

First off, Man Bun's videos are by far the best series showing how almost everything works, he gets to the point without all the flexing so many others do.There's a lot more fine details that Man Bun didn't cover I'm find out. I really wish Man Bun had a Social Media place we could ask questions and post photos or videos. I'm having the same issue with my Bugera. So far I've found I have to invert the switches, still didn't work. Now I'm told I need to go into other CTRL settings and change it to MOM (momentary) So I check under ASSIGN settings in the middle of the PC editor and you can change the latch type. I need to figure these assigns out still, my head is about to explode.

Hey, I use an Engl Retro 50 head. When i plug into the head from the ES8 for amp switching it automatically selects the green light gain boost rather than the no light clean channel, and programming a channel change from the ES8 selects the high gain channel rather than the crunch. Is there any way round this? The port on the back of the amp says channel 1 2 gain boost. Thanks
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 5 лет назад
I'm not exactly sure what issue your are having. It's sounds like the ES-8 is functioning similarly to my ENGL Gigmaster 30. Make sure to use a TRS cable (NOT a TS cable). If you plug it in to CTL 1/2, CTL1 will control the channel or gain boost, and CTL2 will control the other. My guess is if the proper CTL is set to ON, the amp will be set to the crunch channel and if it's OFF it'll be set to the clean channel. I go over this at 3:45.

The ES-8 should be able to control the RC-10R via MIDI or external control. MIDI would probably be the most versatile and you could program buttons on the ES-8 to specifically control the RC-10R.

Dude! I have a EVH 5150/50watt. I just bought the Boss es-5 and I’m having major issues. I cant get midi or the ctrls to work. Sweetwater’s sent me a new one and it does the same. I followed instructions to a T. Any ideas? I’m thinking the amp does not like the switcher
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 5 лет назад
I'm not familiar with the 5150 amps, but I took a quick look at the manual. It looks like there is only one connector for the footswitch and the footswitch controls switching between all three channels and the effects. Because it's controlling so many functions, it's probably not using standard switching like the ES-8 but rather some other signal, so it probably won't work. Fortunately, you do have a MIDI In connector, so you can control the amp with the ES-8 via MIDI. I have a few videos on my channel that should help with that.

@ManBunMetalHead

While I haven't connected two ES-8's myself, it shouldn't be too difficult. The easiest way would be to connect the units in serial (output of first goes to input of second) and use one ES-8 to control the second via MIDI. I'm sure there are more complicated ways to set it up, but this would be a start.

@@ManBunMetalHead that video answers so many of my questions. Thanks so much, you freakin ruuuule! My remaining issue is this… my timeline and big sky aren’t in loops on the es8 (because I run stereo effects loops through two amps) so I need to toggle them on and off via midi. I’m trying to find a way to have a single button on the es8 bypass or engage the strymons on whatever preset those pedals are currently on (ideally one es8 button for the timeline and one button for the big sky). So, for instance, say my big sky is on patch 00 and footswitch/reverb type A is selected. I understand that I can use cc#102 to bypass/engage the pedal for A, but if I need to switch to footswitch B on the big sky, Strymon tech support told me cc#102 will revert to turning footswitch A on and off instead of B. Which sorta makes zero sense in my brain. Essentially I’m looking for way to independently set the a, b, c preset with the big sky or timeline itself and then use a single switch on the es8 to bypass or engage the pedal in whatever state it is currently set to. Seems like it would be a no brainer for Strymon to have a universal midi command that does bypass/engage for whatever preset the unit is currently on, but they said cc#102 doesn’t work like that. I’m hoping they’re just wrong but I haven’t tested it yet. So any ideas on if it’s possible to use assigns to make a single es8 switch that will engage/bypass the big sky on whatever preset is currently active on that pedal (00 and then a, b, or c)? Thanks so much for your help. I always built my own analog switcher/loop boxes and all this programming is making my head spin! But I’m convinced it’ll be worth it once I fully wrap my brain around it.

@@ManBunMetalHead so I just did some tests and unfortunately it seems this still doesn’t solve my problem. It appears that you have to tie all the assigns to a single patch. So I can’t setup each button to truly function independently. I have to use say patch 00.1 and then I only get 12 assigns total. Even if I was only assigning a single function to each button, with assigning leds to turn on and off, I would only be able to get 6 independent buttons I could turn on and off. Super frustrating. I definitely assumed I’d be able to set up each button to be able to be use independently in memory mode. Any ideas?
