Blazing bluegrass picker Trey Hensley explains and demos why he plugs his Martin D-41 into a heavy-metal-ready pedalboard.
In early 2023, PG’s John Bohlinger met up with the duo at 3Sirens Studio in Nashville, where they played some mind-blowing music, and gave a rundown of some of their favorite guitars and gear.

I never thought bluegrass and Swedish death metal would ever cross paths, yet here we are.

A killer guitar player. I really dig that he isn't affraid to take risks with effects and frankly: it works!

The metalzone is way more versatile than people give it credit for. It can be used as a boost and even get a fuzz tone out of it when properly dialed in….

Seeing his Jerry sticker makes me wonder what Jer would do with today’s pedal technology… 😢

Not sure what the point of most of those effects (distortion, chorus) were as you've basically taken all the acoustic nature out of the signal at that point and you nights as well use an electric or something like a Godin or Fender Acoustisonic rather then a $5000 Martin dreadnaught That being, said the Whammy and that auto-wah kind of actually work there

Trey is one of the best guitarists in the world. Probably better to see what can be learned from him than insert useless criticism.

@@ztwilkerson "useless"? Just because he's a monster player doesn't mean one is above some honest critique. You may like making a Martin sound like (to me) a mediocre electric guitar by running it through a distortion pedal, but you have to sometimes ask "why?".

I use those two pedals that you mention (the chorus and the distortion) for less than 2 minutes during a normal 90+ minute show. It’s really just to have fun…there’s no other reason for it. I bought the chorus to use for some Taj Mahal shows that I was playing guitar on and left it on my board because it was fun for the acoustic stuff. But I use them very sparingly. If I used them more than the few moments than I do in a show, then maybe I’d use another guitar. I’m not overthinking it, is basically what I’m saying. I just want to have fun and keep myself entertained and try to musically think outside of the box. That being said, I agree that the distortion doesn’t sound great on an acoustic…it isn’t supposed to. That’s why I don’t use it much… 😁

@@TreyAHensley no disrespect intended! I'm truly in awe of your talent flatpicking. Was just a little confused on the practicality

@@droliver Although it’s clearly being used in an extreme fashion here, distorting an acoustic guitar much more subtly is pretty much de facto in mixing, as low levels help add a touch of compression as well as enhancing the highs and low mids without having to touch an EQ, essentially it does the work of two different types of processing and often less ‘obvious’ as a result. distortion is also essential for a lo-fi/older sound, particularly at the end of the chain and more aggressively than you would for a subtle enhancement. It’s silly to dismiss distortion as something for electric guitar when it’s been used on all instruments since recording was invented, both in and unintentionally.

Everyone else is saying positive things so I’ll be honest I love blue grass and martins but most of those tones with those effects sound like crap maybe just some reverb and delay would be better.

Why would you take a amazing acoustic guitar and cover its acoustic tone with effects? Never will understand this. Just play an electric. Makes zero sense. Not against effects, but why on an acoustic?

Those upper harmonics! Totally different on an acoustic than an electric.
