I’m this kind of dynamic. The mom will only listen to the son, but only when she can tell he is absolutely serious and she can’t sway. They master manipulating and reading their sons.

It’s so selfish as a mother to be acting the way that she is. It’s actually shameful. She got to grow up and find a husband and get married and have the son she’s so obsessed with… but he’s not allowed to do any of that? He doesn’t get to be in a relationship because that will take away from her??? It’s all about what the mom wants and apparently her son doesn’t deserve a life of love and happiness, only her. My mom was very similar. My mom married the man she loved. I married the man I love as well. My husband and I have been together for 42 years. Neither of us allow in laws to come between us. I mean no disrepect to you or your family. You have a loving girlfriend. Please don't let anyone come between the two of you. I could understand if your girlfiend was bad for you, but she is so sweet and respectful.

Difference in culture is not even the reason. Whoever he loves, whether they share the same culture or not, will still be a threat to her. All the mom wants is her son to be with her at all times, she’s just using the fact that she’s different as an excuse.

I agree, This man doesn't love Emily, in the way Emily deserved, he love his mum more, so he will do whatever the mum want first and He wants Emily to understand that her mother is important for him and accept the situation. His mother has been in toxic relationships and end up molding their own kids (or in this case her son) as their ideal lover and they think it's normal to be like this and feel the way she does toward her own son.
I hope the mother never molested the son. Her affection is scary. If a father ever shows that kind of affection for his daughter....what would you think?

You see the father wanting to get up and he wavers between whether to shake hands or hug her hello I think. He didn't get that far ahead because you see the mother's hand touch his leg for him to sit. It might have just been he was standing to greet a lady as a courteous thing... even then she didn't even want that. She wanted her husband seated and as cold as she is
