Everybody loves Boston's first 2 albums. Everybody. Metalheads, glam rockers, punks, soft rockers, grunge bands, pop stars, moms & dads, that one cousin who never talks at holiday gatherings, your brother's new girlfriend... everybody. Everybody loves Boston.
Absolutely. 100%. Fully agreed. Still one of the best rock songs ever. Very unique structure. Should be in anyone’s workout mix. It gets the heart pumping!
Also, This is a PERFECT ALBUM! Every single song is a banger. You could literally do a reaction to every song on the record, and almost everyone would agree with me.
On the last extended scream (before the last chorus), Brad Delp reaches a note that most musicians agree is almost superhuman for a person with his range and tone. I've heard two pro singers say that they simply can't understand how he was able to hit it. Whatever the case, "More Than A Feeling" is one of the most iconic rock songs ever written; it gets played everywhere to this day and I wouldn't be surprised if it was still in heavy rotation a hundred years from now. It is not one of my favorite songs but it is definitely the epitome of an anthemic 70s guitar-driven pop song, and in that sense it is indeed perfect.
It's hard to relate in modern terms how massive an impact this album had when it came out. It dominated everything, every song was a hit, every song is a masterpiece, every guitar player had to figure out this unique sound. I think even today it's still the 5th highest selling debut ever. When Boston released their third album Third Stage, they sold out Boston Garden 17 consecutive days (and I went to one of those shows!). And the craziest thing is this is just basically one guy and a (fantastic) singer and a couple of drummers. Tom Scholtz wrote the songs, played all the instruments except drums, produced and engineered it, and built all the crazy unique sounding effects used on this album, because he was an MIT degreed electrical engineer in his spare time. He took the Boston sound and built a music tech company from it called Rocktron, where he made some of the best sounding pro musicians gear around for a long time. He is a certifiable genius who changed music forever and expanded the horizons of what rock music could be. And they are still out there doing it, despite the singer Brad Delp's sad passing a while ago.
Boston has some of the best rock songs of the late 70s through early/mid 80s. It still is awesome how most of their first album was created in a basement! Evidence of pure talent.
The entire first record is pretty much perfect for all the reasons you talked about. This, and other songs from it, where all over American radio well into the 80's, so it's hard for me to get my head around the idea that people have never heard it. You heard it everywhere.
My wife gotten us back stage passes to Boston, and we got to meet Brad and Kimberly. Brad was truly the nicest guy I've met in the music industry. He was extremely humble and wasn't in a hurry to go anywhere, just took his time with pictures and autographs. I always thought Tom as a great production person with the ability to get the sound he was wanting. I always am astonished on how great of a guitar player Barry is. The guitar playing on "Long Time" and "Don't Look Back" are amazing!
Ah, the glory days of my youth.... where you would hear songs like this BLARING FROM SPEAKERS EVERY DAY. Either in the car with mom and dad, at the skating rink, a friend's house, or in the backyard while playing with friends and the radio being on. You know, there IS something to be said about growing up during the 70's that just can't be repeated... the sheer number of TALENTED artists AT THEIR PEAK performing everywhere you turned. Because today, sadly, the industry seems to be TOO focused on "manufacturing" entertainment than anything else.
I grew up in the 70's too and it was a magical time to grow up. The music was top notch. My older brother loved Boston, BTO, Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night. I was a big younger and I grew up loving the Eagles, Bob Seger and others from that era.
I totally agree with you and find myself as they (and They meaning they all seem to do it) stop the song at the first set of high notes he hits, screaming at the computer " You haven't heard anything yet!" LOL
In September 1977 I was a freshman in college. The student dormitories were built around courtyards. In every courtyard there were windows that were open to the warm fall breezes, and in every courtyard, this song was blaring out from of one of those windows. It was the inescapable background music to everything happening on campus. I met a girl that September, and almost 50 years later when I hear More Than a Feeling, I still recall how I closed my eyes and she slipped away. A perfect song indeed.
Hi Miss Bisscute 🖐 I Think you would like the song Amanda or My Personal Favorite ( What does it take to be a Man ) 😊 As always the like button 🔳 has been Illuminated 👍
Tom Scholz is the genius guitarist (he was an MIT grad) behind Boston. Wrote all the songs. Then, in his basement studio, recorded all the music - playing all the instruments, except the drums. Only other person on that original album is the singer Brad Delp. Delp sung all the singing parts - harmonizing with himself. Scholz designed special electronics for the music, too.
It's my humble opinion that it is absolutely the all-time greatest song ever. This is 60 years of experience talking. Strong argument for their song "Hitch a Ride" on the same album is #2 all-time, and my #1 favorite.
For me, this is the best rock song of all time. After thouands of plays over many years, it still moves me and makes me feel happy and pumped at the same time. Everything. It is the perfect song. And I agree with others, the album is perfect too. Pretty much any Boston song is fire.
One of the best debut albums ever. That is especially true when you consider that almost all of it was recorded in Tom Sholtz's basement in the 1970s. He wrote almost all of the songs and played guitar, keyboards and bass. It was an unbelievable achievement.
I had the privilege of seeing Boston a year before Brad's passing, in Phoenix. At that show, Brad held that final note for well over 30 seconds. I think he was 55 years old at the time, and he still had amazing power in his voice. Amazing band! Amazing vocalist! Rest in peace Brad.
You really need to listen to this album. Literally every song on this, their debut album, is a great song. That’s not even remotely an exaggeration. It is probably the best debut album by any band ever
This video is a live tour performance synced to an edited version (omits the second verse) of the album track. With regard to the people in this video, every instrument except drums on this track was played by the lead guitarist (Tom Scholz, the only one without facial hair), the drums by Sib Hashian (seen in the video), and all of the vocals (lead and harmony) by Brad Delp, the singer shown here. It should be a crime that Delp isn't on every "Top 10 Rock Vocalist" list.
Biss, the lead singer's name is Brad Delp (R.I.P.). The audio is a radio edit of the studio recording. Delp sang all of the vocals you heard (lead AND harmonies); the band was lip-syncing in the video. Unfortunately, there isn't much footage of Boston's live shows and most of what does exist has pretty poor sound quality. I recommend that you stick to the album versions of their music, because it's fantastic!
Tom Shultz was the founder of the band Brad Delp lead vocals,Biss every single song on the debute album titled Boston is a huge hit! 🎸and Tom Shultz wrote this song about his older cousin he had a crush on when he was a kid,LOL
Miss Madalina ( Bisscute ) As for you Last video with Pat Benitar you seem to enjoy the Mini Head banging over the softer Artsy sound so ( Heartbreaker ) In my Humble Opinion is the way to Go !!! Yes she was Small , However she is an amazing Rocker With a Strong & Fierce stage presence with as you have witnessed an incredible Vocal ability 😊 She Has amassed a long list of top 10 hits over her career !!! Pat & Maddonna were filling the Raido & MTV with amazing music 🎶 As I stated Pat was Rock as to where Maddonna was the Artsy Dance song writer In my humble opinion 👍
Perspective: It is likely this was recorded before your *parents* were born. This entire album is top-shelf. Every single track is a winner. F'ck the golden disc; they should have sent this out with Voyager, which launched 11 months after the album was released, and reached interstellar space (left the solar system) over a decade ago. That's how long this album has stood the test of time, and I imagine it will continue for many years to come.
This song as well as 6 of the 7 other songs on the album were recorded in Tom Sholz's (lead guitarist) basement. All instruments excluding drums (Sib Hashian rip) were played by Tom. All vocals sang by Brad Delp rip. Released in 1976. Maryann was Tom's cousin he a crush on when he was 10. Considered best debut album ever by millions, every cut on the album is legendary. 👍😎❤️
Definitely NOT a garage band. Yes, Tom Scholz recorded almost the entire first album in a home studio, but it was a then state-of-the-art studio he designed and built. He earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from MIT and was also a project manager at Polaroid. He holds several patents for musical electronic devices he invented and used on his recordings. Tom played almost all of the guitar, bass, and keyboards on the first album, with only the drums and Brad Delp's vocals not performed by him. He was and is a perfectionist who produced multiple tracks to get the layered, rich sound he wanted - the antithesis of the definition of a garage band. In fact, Boston did not exist as a band until well after the first album was released and the label pressured Tom to form a band to tour in support of the album, which had rocketed to the top of the charts and was receiving very heavy airplay on radio nationwide. He never enjoyed playing live for the first years of the band's existence, much preferring crafting and recording his songs in his studio.
Terrific summary of the backstory. No one had ever heard anything like that flawless production. The layered guitars, the stratospheric vocal blending with those guitars. Haunting vocals, blend of acoustic 12 string opening building to harder tempo chorus.
First heard this song in the parking lot of my high school near the end of the Summer out of the car stereo of one of my buddies. He played us the entire album. We were all just blown away. Between this Boston album and the Frampton Comes Alive album, two great consecutive Summers with epic music. This was in addition to all the other great stuff coming out. Got to see Jethro Tull, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ted Nugent the next Summer. Great times, those 1970’s. Unfortunately, couldn’t afford Zeppelin tickets.
You are right, this is a perfect song... The year was 1976. Brad Delp, the singer, has one of the most impressive voice of rock history, his tone is incredibly agreeable, and his range his unequalled. Sadly, he left this world... Tom Scholz, the guitarist, is also a tremendous keyboardist, and an MIT electricis engineer who created his own amps and pedals, that why Boston sound is unique! The drummer has a quartz clock in him, so he's never offset...
I think I was 10 when this song came out and when I heard that voice...I just instantly fell in love with it. Oh my gosh I just love this song so much and it still gives me goosebumps and shivers. It's perfection in my humble opinion, the guitar, drums and that voice...sigh!
Harmonies, great vocals, good lyrics, a talented band rather than studio musicians and machines, no autotune and computer effects, .... this isn't modern music!!!
YES, finally some Boston!!! 😎🤘 You said it Biss, a perfect song... from a perfect album. One of the greatest classic rock bands, with one of the best vocalists in Brad Delp. Hope you react to ever song on this album. Cheers!😊
This was one of the top selling debut rock releases of all time for quite some time. Every song on this is reaction worthy, "Peace Of Mind", "Foreplay/Long Time", "Rock And Roll Band", Hitch A Ride" and "Smoking'". And that is just the first album!!! 🔥
To echo that my personal favorite is the second to last song "Something About You," just a 4 minute, made-for-FM-radio banger. Best song off the album IMHO.
We were definitely spoilt growing up in this era. There were so may great bands, artists, and songs that it is only when I hear them now (thanks Miss Bisscute) that I realise how truly great each one is individually. Nostalgia ...
Unfortunately, the video version is also the single version, which omits the 2nd verse. If you really like this song, be sure to add the album version to your playlist. This is my favorite song of all time. I have not grown tired of it since I first heard it in 1976.
Love me some Boston. There used to be a time where I had the first three albums constantly being rotated. And, when thinking about Boston, I went through a mental list of other bands that are similar and/or were from the similar timeframe...and I noticed that you don't have any Styx or Blue Oyster Cult reactions. That's not to say that you haven't reacted to 'em...I just don't see any. Something to add to the proverbial list.
Hard to argue with this being a perfect song. I mean what more can you want, it has incredible vocals, crescendos, slow parts, faster parts guitar solos, great lyrics telling a story, beautiful sounding all round. I'm 31 and have a huge love for so much older music. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of modern rock/metal bands I like too, but a lot of my favourites are from before I was born 😂
Tom Shultz, an engineer at MIT created all the instrumentals, and the equipment that created the sound, in his basement. Sib Hashian on the drums, and he found Brad Delp to make it magical.
Boston has so many great songs, and More Than a Feeling is a true classic! The vibe of this song is hard to beat... Try NOT to move your head to that riff!! The skill on this entire album is almost esoteric.
