Please do an episode on Indian writing in English. I DO NOT mean Chetan Bhagat, Amish Tripathi and IITians-turned-crappy-writers and their ilk. I want to hear what you guys think about the writers (and poets) who put Indian writing in English on the map...right from R.K Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand, Sarojini Naidu, Kamala Das to the contemporaries. I am going to keep commenting until you do this episode. :D

First things first - Yaay. Kautuk's finally here. Now that we're done with that, the episode was so much fun. I've made a mental note of the books that were mentioned that I haven't read yet (read: most). Books really do take you on a journey through the places they're set in. One of the most exciting things for me as a child was reading Harry Potter and wanting to go to Hogwarts (Does that qualify under the themes of wanderlust though?) Also, Kautuk should definitely get those Travelogues of his out in some form - print, blog, whatever. I'd love to read 'em.

I've been dying to visit Japan. and in my case also its because of Murakami...but not Haruki. I'm more in love with Ryu Murakami's dark twisted Japan - the murky underbelly of Tokyo. It is supremely fascinating. The other two authors who write in similar style are Natsuo Kirino and Hitomi Kanehara. However, I'm also interested in checking out the Japanese countryside thanks to authors like Kobo Abe, Yukio Mishima, Yoko Ogawa, Jun'ichiro Tanizaki and Yasunari Kawabata.

I have a feeling you'll totally dig Ryu Murakami - especially his books like Audition, In the Miso Soup and Piercing. Natsuo Kirino's Out and Grotesque are fab. Hitomi Kanehara is a very young author. She wrote this book about the Tokyo youth called Snakes and Earrings which is very very dark. Yoko Ogawa's The Housekeeper and the Professor was recommended both by Paul Auster and David Mitchell (2 authors I worship!). Yukio Mishima is a master of the craft of writing - anything by him is nothing less than spectacular! I could honestly go on and on about Japanese authors! They're life! :)

its sad that you don't read Hindi literature. Rahul Sankrityayan was , I dare say, the greatest travel writer of all time. His every book is a journey itself and there is nothing gorgeous than the way he describes a place and the people he met; you think this must be a fiction but its not , that's how beautifully he has written.

There are plenty of names on my mind but a few very highly recommendations: Maila Aanchal (Phanishwer nath Renu) Volga se Ganga tak (Rahul Sankrityayan) Gunaho ka Devta( DharmVir Bharti) short stories: Yahi Sach hai ( Mannu Bhandari ) Dhoop ka ek tukda (Nirmal Verma) poetry : Anything by Dushyank Kumar, Kuwar Narayana , Paash , Amrita Pritam .

I absolutely loved these podcasts on books. Hated to find out how little I have read, though. :p I am so happy that you guys came up with this! I can refer to the videos to choose what to read next for another couple of months atleast! Would you maybe make a podcast on books for aspiring bookworms? What beginners should read to develop interest in reading and the likes. Because I know people who(for some bizarre reason or another) don't find interest in books, which in my opinion is impossible; I feel they just haven't come across the right one to start with yet. It'll be wonderful if you'd address that!

(sputnik sweetheart also reminded me of a book I read, last year - hot milk by deborah levy.) + with respect to the subject of this video, i do want to visit both tokyo (even more, now) and the tiny greek island after reading this!

Another great episode! Makes me want to pack up and leave right away! Enjoyed it thoroughly. On another note, nobody talks about the process of writing, the language, and the technical aspects of a book.. what the writer goes through with regards to the craft and the story. It would make for a great discussion and since Anuya writes too, it would bring the talk about the art of writing, especially in a country like India, to the fore. I'm sure many would be interested in this topic and having an Indian writer on the show would be perfect. Maybe someone like Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi? There are many on the list, but I love his work. I'd love it if this subject is talked about more.
