Botched Damp Diagnosis 

BODGED DIAGNOSIS! This is something I find really annoying and its much more common than you might think!
I come across bodged diagnosis quite often. It's when an investigation takes place and the surveyor is expecting to find the cause attributable to something obvious, the cause they're looking to find. The problem occurs however, when they don't find it. As such, they formulate a diagnosis from anything which sounds remotely plausible without any evidence to justify it 'botched diagnosis'.
This client paid £750.00 + VAT for a leak detection survey and when the leak detection specialist couldn't find a leak, he substituted further investigation for a mythical explanation, in this case the explanation was that the garage door seals and the absence of a threshold were to blame. The recommendation was to replace the door.
The client of course acted on the recommendation and instructed a uPVC specialist to fit a new door. It was only when the uPVC specialist visited site and became suspicious did he recommend a second opinion - call Dryfix was the answer.
Now this survey was booked by mistake as a standard 'non-invasive' damp inspection however, it was quickly apparent that I wouldn't find the answer without doing a little more. Had I been aware of the history, prior report and diagnosis, I would have informed the client immediately that this needed to be an intrusive investigation. Shit happens and this client received the benefit of my experience, equipment and willingness to help for a fraction of the normal survey charge, I don't mind that at all. It's just good business.
Remember, never formulate a diagnosis on what you expect to find, let the facts present the answers!
