Video of Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin and SideScan Sonar Recordings
Bottlenose Dolphin - Tursiops Truncatus
I'm often surprised by the things I see when I head out on the water for another kayak adventure and this day was a HUGE surprise. 8-12-foot Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins in 3-6 feet of water swimming under and around my kayak in 50 degrees F water in the Elizabeth River in Virginia.
I first saw them in the distance and didn't expect them to begin surveying the bottom of my kayak. I continued fishing and eventually found myself surrounded by a pod of dolphins, very curious as to why I was out fishing in the middle of January. It appears there may have been a few juvenile dolphins learning from their parents by mimicking swimming movements, as you'll see in the video.
I have had a couple Dolphin check out my kayak before, but never have they stuck around this long or conduct swim-bys like they did this day.
The day was capped off by some curious River Otters (that didn't surround my kayak).
What a great experience around some very intelligent marine mammals.
The SideScan Sonar was recorded using a 7" Lowrance HDS Live w/ Active Imaging 3 in 1 transducer. The dolphin can be seen in the screen by looking for their black shadows, which are very large due to their size and hardness of their bodies.
Video recordings using iPhone 12 and GoPro 9.
