Boulez: Notation II / Boulez · Berliner Philharmoniker 

I love the dichotomy between the frail old man, serenely beating time, and the savage, dissonant music unfolding before him.

When I subscribed to the streaming Berlin Philharmoniker live and library of performance I listened to all the Boulez dozens of times. Whether he was conducting, speaking or if one of his works was being performed, he is, surely, one of the great composers of the late 20th and early 21st century. If only the Berlin Phil. streaming service was cheaper, I'd subscribe again in an instant!

The thing I like about these videos is that they show the most exciting part of a piece, such that it draws attention and makes me want to listen to the rest of it, even to a more modern piece like this Boulez work. Although it might seem like instant gratification, arguably it has also stirred many minds to listening to pieces of music they have never even known of before.

This piece changed my life.

Very exhilarating, I've loved it from the first time I heard it way back in the eighties; but I wonder if this set of pieces would get more performances if he'd made an arrangement for a regular-sized orchestra. Does it really need all those trumpets? Are the piano and harp even audible? I suppose they might be more prominent in some of the other numbers, but even so it's rather extravagant, and expensive to put on.

I love this piece. But why is it always impossible to get rythmic précision with classical musicians ? this sounds very unprecise To me. I really wonder who can do it if boulez and this orchestra can't.....
