Lex didn't notice her as the lawyer's assistant because 1) she didn't look hot and, 2) she was beneath his station, his employee's employee. He noticed her at the fancy event because she was dressed to belong at a "fancy" event for the rich, and she looked hot! Power and looks = the things Lex notices. He also likes intrigue, and when women play hard to get e.g. Dr. Helen, Shannon at the party, Lana.

Guys, why are you arguing about why Lex didn't recognize her with glasses? That's the whole point of Superman, he just wears glasses, acts shy and no one says: Hey, Clark it's Superman!!!
@asyouwish3636
@asyouwish3636 3 месяца назад
the fact that "Clark" is the disguise for "Superman" is also a commentary on who society deems important enough to notice. the clumsy, quiet, awkward character: either in Clark Kent or in that office assistant that Lex forgot about after their one-night stand, are both "instantly forgettable" because they are the opposite of society's supposed idea of attractiveness because in theory they have the appearance of someone who lacks charisma and confidence and therefore wouldn't be noticed. it's so weird that the guys even questioned why Lex wouldn't notice her. it's pretty obvious lol not to mention the show holds our hands in over explaining (all of Michael's questions) how Lex didn't recognize/remember her even after sleeping w her twice!

@@setofreakinkaiba8553 yeah I've been told I look like a totally diff person when I do my hair/make-up compared to natural face and simple ponytail lol... That plus the psychological aspect plus only a few people ever see Superman (or even Clark) up close, it really shouldn't need extra explaining why his hiding in plain sight totally works!
@martinmoreno1155
@martinmoreno1155 3 месяца назад
I think Lex not recogninzing Cobie Smulders. character when she walks into his office in the beginning of the episode with glasses was clever. It adds context to this storyline of Lex quickly forgetting about the women he's with. His laywer even brings it up shortly after of how they had a thing at one point and he had forgotten about it.
@asyouwish3636
@asyouwish3636 3 месяца назад
not to mention, Lionel specifically describes Lex's patterns and he's attracted to women who remind him of his mother. OF COURSE he wouldn't remember her cuz he's got a string of one-night stands w women who all look alike and who he is only with for a brief time and he's probably drinking (heavily) during. lol it's weird why the boys didn't get all that! especially when it was kinda laid out for us in the ep 😂

It’s a twist that works better if the actor isn’t famous, as Cobie Smulders is now. I confess that 20 years (!) ago, it fooled me.
@Costas22
@Costas22 3 месяца назад
Looking back now, I'd say both female guest stars stand out. Back then we mainly focused on Jane Seymour because she was already a star and she looked drop dead gorgeous. But Cobie Smulders gives glimpses of how good she was going to be and she differentiated her "characters" very well. Another big Hollywood star who got her first major role on Smallville.

This is presumably the second time I've seen it (apparently I do not find this episode memorable) and I still didn't recognize her haha. In terms of conservation of information in screen storytelling, most non speaking characters are unimportant and just there to provide realism and vibe for a scene, not detail. I'm not ashamed. In real life, it's rude not to acknowledge people in a room with you, although if you're Lex and stressed and the assistant is just handing over papers and never speaks to you and your lawyer is talking...you'll probably focus on the lawyer.
@Chimchimchu
@Chimchimchu 3 месяца назад
Yeah, nobody recognized her. This is a thing they do on a test group first to make sure they clipped it together correctly. They knew ahead of time 'almost' nobody is going to notice it's the same person. They pulled a similar trick on an episode of Sherlock where they used the same girl for 3 different people before she's revealed to be Sherlock's sister..

It was in Sneeze when Clark discovers his super breath. Chloe tells him to try blowing because of what his lung capacity did when he sneezed.
@jsbrads1
@jsbrads1 3 месяца назад
Lung capacity is the wrong direction, Clark isn’t significantly bigger than other people, Clark’s ability could have been to blow air faster 😅
@dominicusx
@dominicusx 3 месяца назад
It's mostly his lung capacity and alien physiology. It's why he can run, swim and well fly fast because of great lung capacity. The episode "Sneeze" is dedicated to this philosophy of force and released air capacity during a sneeze. Superman generally inhales then releases his super breath. The race with Bart showed his limit of his lung capacity, like it did with AC in the water. His ability to store large quantities of air, stretches of lungs to release the stored air after inhalation... that and he's not human lol 😆 rather humanoid. His body propensities goes beyond human capabilities, his lungs likely stretch more or are more flexible because he can breath in space.
@halomultiplayermoments3651
@halomultiplayermoments3651 3 месяца назад
@@dominicusxnope it’s because the yellow sun affects Clark’s cells differently because of his kryptonian physiology. Nothing at all to do with lung capacity WTF 😂
@dominicusx
@dominicusx 3 месяца назад
@halomultiplayermoments3651 that has to do with energy, cellular regeneration, adrenaline, super strength, not lung capacity, which again he has to inhale to blow out. When he's underwater, for example. Alien physiology is what I said, so of course there's different celluar make up. When Clark is out of breath, the sun does not replenish his airwaves as it does his wounds.

Another season 4 episode the main plot of which felt detached from the season's main arc. However, unlike Facade and Devoted, it didn't feel lke a waste. Because we finally got a season 4 episode that focused on Lex and his descent. And the scene between Clark and Lex in the end was so iconic of the Superman/Luthor dynamic: "I want you to change, Lex". "I don't know if I can".
@asyouwish3636
@asyouwish3636 3 месяца назад
idk if you're also doing a re-watch to go along w the podcast, but if so take note that while on the surface these episodes may feel detached (especially w that forced ancestry and sorcery threads interwoven w the crystals plot) but the overall arc of S4 is actually Lex's descent (against the juxtaposition of Clark ascent, finally starting his training by creating the fortress) so in S1-3, Clark and Lex are learning and growing, still being molded, and in S4 we see that they are finally starting to take shape. this is the season that shows there's no going back for either of them and their respective destinies are inevitable now
@Costas22
@Costas22 3 месяца назад
@@asyouwish3636 It is fair to say that season 4 is the one that cements that Clark and Lex's friendship won't last and that they are on opposite paths (hence why I liked this episode as well as Onyx). And it also sets up other stuff like Lexana, Lionel's turn to the good, Clark and Chloe as close friends, etc. On paper though, season 4's main story was The Stones Of Knowledge. The season culminates with their collection and the formation of the FOS. But along the way, it's a story that gets forgotten along the way with episodes focusing on other stuff (from Lex's womanizing to Lois' sister). In contrast, in season 3 you didn't see the story about Lionel's crimes get pushed to the side like this.

It would be more effective for if Lex wasn't being demonized for having one night stands. Not great, but not really terrible either. Especially when he wasn't responsible for ruining the lady's life. She did that herself, but chose to blame Lex.

I can see your point, but those other episodes you mentioned also had important character moments and/or growth that factor into the general importance of Smallville, just like this episode did with Lex, Clark, and Lionel. I didn't see any of those episodes or this one as a waste. Though personal storyline preference may affect what we saw as a waste, these episodes all have character important moments. I think shows with as many episodes a season like Smallville, had to have side plot episodes that weren't focused fully on the seasons main core plot to not get oversaturated and repetitive. But, these side episodes still need to have main characters grow/change and have relationship growth.

@@lilacmist04 There's no "growth" or development in an episode like Facade or Devoted. And I better not hear "Lois begins liking journalism" because she goes back to hating it for another year. Or I better not hear "Clark and Lois grow closer" because they keep bickering like siblings for another 4 years. Boy, I can't wait for all the growth and development in Lucy...

Jane Seymour is still a very attractive woman, always has been. It's rare to find someone that ages that well and maintains all of their attractiveness over decades of working. I had forgotten that she was in Smallville until I re-watched this episode. Live and Let Die is one of my favorite Bond movies because she is in it. I hope you guys can maybe get her on the show in the future, would be great to hear what she has to say on her experiences doing Smallville.

I like the conservation between Clark and Lex at the end about Lex's darkness as well as the conversation between Jason and his mom in the limo at the end. I like Lionel being good. I noticed that line "you slept with her 18 months ago" would mean that he slept with her around the time he was getting married to Helen. Which means he was not faithful to Helen.

Fun fact about myself; I went to primary school (the Australian version of elementary school) with a guy named "Adam Knight" and I also went to high school with a girl named "Shannon Bell." Some might think that was just a weird coincidence, but I'm pretty sure that was the universe trying to tell me "you're going to be a fan of Smallville one day!" 😂

I will say I remember watching this when it first came out and it was before Cobie was in How I met Your mother so she was just another actor on screen. I didn’t notice it was her to the reveal at the end. You focus on your main cast not background actors generally. So it did work you don’t notice her

You also have to realize, he wasn’t looking for her, he thought she was dead. He barely looked at her. And, the Superman trope of glasses.

The darkness is always in Lex Luthor as it emerges Lionel goes in a redemption path as he takes the second chance as a huge advantage. Margot Kidder's character was to become the big bad but Genevieve Teague was becoming a more prominent villain as her character had a mysterious past that was getting interesting.

🌹🌹 So much to like about this one because it's a Lex-centric, Mystery/Crime Drama episode but it's also the Smallville that I tend to lean more to as it's character driven and more grounded. Lex is clearly going through depression at this point, showing his psychological scars. While nothing justifies his indiscretions, you can't help but feel for him as he's quite clearly a damaged soul, his terrible upbringing, learning his parents are murderers, Helen betraying him, Clark and Jonathan not trusting him, his lust for power; it's all had an mental impact in his inevitable struggle. When Lex tells Clark not to give up on him is an indication of where his character is at this moment, someone who is tragically slipping towards his dark side as Lionel put it as a semblance to his own "destructive power", and then of course, you see more of that shift in Lex's personality after "Onyx" later in the series. Overall it was an interesting watch with a play on the glasses being the disguise, another foreshadowing Clark's future identity, Lex wearing his black gloves, Smallville was always good at providing those little crumbs for those who understand the Superman mythology.

I gave this episode 1 Rose, and then added 1/2 a Star, because it was a good episode AND it got the 1 Rose with almost NO Clark Powers. So that earn 1/2 a Rose. 1 1/2 Roses. It is a good episode, bottom line. Good Post, everyone.

Margaret Isobel Thoreaux was Lana's ancestor which is why they looked alike. Lana was chosen for this reason when she touched the tomb then possessed when she touched the book. Chloe and Lois on the other hand was for convenience because they were at the party.
