It was only a matter of time... Join costars Tom Welling (Clark Kent) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) as they dissect a new episode every week from one of the greatest shows of all time, Smallville. With this weekly dose of nostalgia you can look forward to an inside look at what it was like to film the episode, get some fun facts that only those on set could tell you, and hear what’s like for Tom and Michael to revisit the life changing saga that premiered nearly 20 years ago.
Emily in Bell reve was addressed twice in the end. Chloe told Clark that she disappeared from bell reve as soon as she was admitted. Then just before Lionel was arrested Lionel and lex discussed it, Lionel said ‘they have a habit or misplacing patients’.
It’s funny, because the writers were not two teenage girls but when this came out, I think it was received so well by its target audience. (A lot being teenagers) So, I think it seems like a filler episode for them now, but it was soo fun and relatable when I first saw it 20 years ago.
people saying they didn't even have much of an accent always makes me laugh because it's from people who i can clearly hear a clear accent on (meaning not sounding American, which i know is an accent itself). there's nothing wrong with her accent, but i always knew she was Canadian even before i knew her name lol.
Someone please tell me which scene Johnathan is talking about with Lionel and lex? I just rewatched the episode and can’t find the scene he’s talking about
I'm late to the discussion (just started watching Smallville for the first time, loving the podcast!) and someone may have already pointed this out, but Lex's purple wardrobe is likely a nod to the comics. Traditionally, heroes in comics are designed using primary colors (blue, red, like Clark wears) and villains are designed using secondary colors (purple, green). I didn't think about it until you guys were discussing it, but it's awesome that the wardrobe for the show leaned into the comic book coloring for Clark and Lex. You guys are awesome! Looking forward to watching the rest!
I figured they got the red kryptonite from Superman III. Richard Pryors character, Gus Gorman, makes synthetic kryptonite. Either way, I loved any episode with the red K. I think the beginning of season 3 has him in metropolis robbing atms and it was pretty cool. Probably lame now but in 2003 it was great.
Something that drove me nuts was I felt Clark was a constant asshole to Lex, and essentially pushed Lex over the edge. For God’s sake, he never even knocked, he just barged into Lex’s place like he was Cramer. Clark was really the bad guy, and Lex was the victim.
To answer Sarah’s question… It demonstrates that Superman is a hero because of his strong moral upbringing. In other words, he needs both sets of parents to become the hero that he becomes… powerful genes (nature) and strong character (nurture). In fact, the whole Clark vs. Lex dynamic is really an exploration of the classic nature versus nurture debate, IMO. Also, I liked Raj’s question! 😎💗 Great to see Sam! 💖
I heard a criticism of this episode from screen rant saying they stopped watching after it because it was fat phobic, makes me think im glad it was aired when it was. I love this podcast btw so cool to see you guys together and talking about this series, i remember watching weekly waiting each week for a new episode
Did anyone notice that in the last scene where Lana and Clark are talking in the Talon that there are shadows of rain dripping down windows on both of their faces? There's no windows in the back of the Talon and the light was inside the Talon, not outside the windows to light them. That effect didn't logically make sense to me and I didn't notice it until this last time I watched the episode.
Looking at it purely from the character of Clark Kent. The two people who know his secret, his parents, who are in a time of pain - ostracized him temporarily. He can’t talk to Lana. Pete knows his secret but has already had a ton of pressure on him, so Clark can’t really talk to him. This leaves Clark feeling he truly has hurt everyone and can’t talk to even the people who he can open up with. He truly feels his only option is to leave everyone and everything which he views as safe. Clark’s safety is superseded only by the hurt he places on others, in his mind. Leaving is his only choice, according to him, particularly because of the importance of not sharing the secret his parents have placed in him.
Smallville is the ultimate comfort show for us from the ages of 24 to 41 ish and all ages really but especially that bracket the soundtrack brings all of us zillenials and millennials back, many people myself included dive into this show when life gets too much and that’s the test of a great show, something capable of helping you forget the troubles of life if even for 45 minutes at a time.
The actor that played the Grim Reaper was John DeSantis, He was in the same unit as me in the military reserves, 5th Field Regiment RCA. He was handy to have around on the gun as he could move it by himself without help. Typically it would be a 4 man job, or more on bad terrain. Deepest voice ever. He also played Lurch on the New Adams Family. Cool guy.
It amazes me how many people like season 5. I almost gave up on the show after that season. Love hearing how Tom got in the snow. All I knew watching it was there were no tracks of him getting there and thought it was an awesome detail.
Michael needs to go on meds. It has gone from cranky to completely unwatchable, he is losing the plot. I love him but I don’t know why he is so bitter and shittier than usual. This episode doesn’t deserve this kind of untapped unhinged stupidity. I couldn’t even watch this episode as Ryan and Tom can’t control Michael or to keep the conversation civil.
Hey guys, great show. Id like to ask you to bring allison to one of your podcasts. I know it is a sensitive topic, but she was really great actress as Chloe, and she has paid her due, so maybe you could give her a chance, because she really was great at the show, and as im rewatching the show, i remember how i liked all of the main cast so much, including chloe.
its wild that Rosey and Tom were put in very dangerous conditions and they didn't get hurt. CW just green screen it. Why put your main actors in this much danger.
And this is what you get for blabbing in front of people around you without pay attention to where you are, Lex and Jason! Blabbermouths. Speaking of which, Michael have you ever been in the same situation for real?
This episode had so much impact, but why did they kill Alicia with such a small character?! They should have brought back a previous villain and she saved someone then died.. Even more impactful if she saved Lana and Clark wasn't there in time.
Hey! Exactly what i saw and its the truth: superman HAS to be a genuinely kind man the actor the person behind him, because of supermans nature. It this case no amount of acting could amend the character of the man, s man behind the character has to have kind soul. Exactly my words! And thats why it works.
