I love the way Codi and Michelle are with each other. She has a girlish almost coyness about her and the cutest of laughs he lovingly teases her. They work together as a team and take each others needs into account and give and take as the need arises. They have a beautiful childlike way about them yet are more mature than many people twice their age. Love watching their videos and as someone who is may be twice their age or pretty well near it I’m learning from them. Your never to old to learn just as you are never to young to teach. Such a refreshing couple. ❤

If you ever find yourself overwhelmed with excess harvest and little time or energy, maybe invite your friends over to harvest with you. That way you're still sharing your bounty (while having fun with friends) & don't have the stress of doing all the "heavy lifting" on your own 🥰

If you have a Costco nearby you can go to the back of the building and they usually have a ton of shelves that they throw away. I have so many now and they all are even the type on wheels. All free. They appreciate people taking them so they don't have to dispose of them. Also pallets galore.

As a person who has owned several lawnmowers and suffered in the summer heat for many years, I cannot recommend geese highly enough. They fertilize while keeping the lawn mowed and are very good at deterring predators from the chickens

My goodness, your bounty is amazing! So much work for you all. Generous with your friends and family too. I had sooooo many jalapeños I made 20 pints of cowboy candy, froze 5 lbs whole, gave a tonne away, and made hot sauce! Didn't have the fortitude to make jalapeños poppers lol ❤ So glad you don't spray your apples!

My family's long-time favorite way to store root vegetables is to dry them well of course and layer them into wooden plywood bins with really dry sand...I have been doing it for a good 60 years myself. Everything stays garden-fresh for over a year...esp. carrots and potatoes. I store seed potatoes, sweet potatoes, in separate bin's so I can pull them out of the sand a month or so ahead of planting them so their root's can activate.

Carrot tops contain significant amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, calcium, and iron. They're also rich in dietary fiber, which is good for digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as carotenoids, which are good for your eyes.Jan

I started using urine on my 45 year old fruit trees about 2 years ago. It was a miracle, they are so rejuvenated. their production has doubled at least! I thought beetle .

Love you guys. Soon you will be able to quit your day job. Hint: Plant comfrey under your apple trees!!!! It is a pest deterent and also pulls the nutrients up for your apple tree's. Along with that take a water bottle: Fill it with water. Put a drop of Dawn dish soap, some borax and some honey. Put the cover on the bottle. Lay the bottle down at the base of the tree somewhere. Then drill a hole or two in the side facing up (for ants and critters to go in) This is a trap for anything that even thinks of crawling up your apple tree. This worked wonders for me. No sprays.

I love your channel! I appreciate what you're doing! 💜💫Watching this, I wanted to ask. Have you considered dehydrating your beans, peppers, and tomatoes? A dehydrator is a handy tool. But if you don't have one, put your items on a cookie sheet in a vehicle on a hot summer day. If it's in the middle of summer, one day should get them where you can store. No canning. No freezer. 😉

I store my carrots in peat moss. I change it every year and put the old peat in my compost pile.

If Sweet potatoes are anything like Kumara (nz potatoes) they need a hard bed pan for them to hit their roots on before they make good size tubers. Set a specific bed for sweet potatoes and put down corrogate 1-2 feet’s then fill the bed with soil on top. The roots will hit the corrogate and then start growing by big tubers

We used to keep carrots and other root vegetables in sand over winter. We had the large galvanized wash tubs. Fill the bottom with 1-2 inches of good sand. Nothing that came from your yard that may have weed seeds. Then the fun comes. Start placing in the root vegetables, top cut short but not to the crown of the plant. They can't touch the tub or each other, so you get to play the Puzzle Game. When you have a layer cover them with sand and have about 1/2 inch between each layer until you reach the top. We then covered the tubs with 1 layer of old t-shirts that have been cut up or an old sheet. This kept out any vermin and still allowed the sand/veggies to breathe. We had good luck with carrots, parsnips, turnips, but would have some issues with beets. It may have been the type we had, but we found they would rot or leak out the redness from the beet and you ended up with a semi pinkish beet, so we always canned them. The thicker skinned veggies would sit in the sand, and draw moisture and grow thin rootlets. They would also sweeten as the carbs in them slowly changed to sugars. They were always good come January when the wind and snow were blowing. We lived in S/W Iowa at the time and had an unheated basement in an old farmhouse.

I've never gotten a carrot bigger than my finger from my garden, so when you pulled that first one up, OMG! Awesome. I will buy the same seeds and mulch more and maybe ... oh! and the board trick!

Yay! sounds great. Another huge secret to big carrots is thinning them to at least 2 inches apart. This will give the carrot room to expand.

I love your channel, I am in Ohio also so it is nice to have a farm channel closer by. My sweet potatoes were about the size of a small cucumber but at least I got some, hopefully next year will be better, I am going to try them in tubs instead of the ground. You guys are doing a great job. My goal next year is less veggie garden and more emphasis on my raspberries, blueberries and strawberries. I am giving away my blackberries bushes because they are not our favorite although they have done great. Thank you for all the videos.

I had two or three apple trees several years ago and I always had issues with bugs and flies, and never really looked that good, until i started to take a gallon milk jug, or similar plastic container. i put a flap in the top side and put a cup of sugar with vinegar and water mixture amounts i think was like a pint of each . i put one on each tree, and had to change the mixture out once during the complete season as i recall, and the flies died from the vinegar and the results was pretty apples and had a great crop . I liked not spraying with any toxic spray also.

We dry our cherry tomatoes in a dehydrator and then grind them into powder You can then mix ~1 spoon of tomato powder with some water and you get toato paste Works better than i tought and the dried tomatoes have a great umami flavour

You have a wonderful and beautiful harvest. Its truly a blessing. My husband and I went to a grocery store for the first time a while. Seeing the prices was very shocking. A small bundle of green onions $1...back in the old days it was 4 for $1. Im very shocked and saddened to see produce and meat prices so high. The "sale" price now is the old "regular" price just a few short years ago. 💔

Unfortunately I can remember back to the early 70s when there were lines at the gas pumps and they had the infamous beef shortages which spawned a small resurgence of cattle rustling. Ground beef shot up to $.49/lb! This was also a time they started mixing TVP in things to make it stretch more so when you saw hamburger on sale for $.29/lb you learned very quickly they had mixed TVP with the meat. You could definitely taste the difference. This was before they had to have ingredient labels. Round steak went up to $.99 and so did a gallon of milk. At that time you could still find boxes of Mac and cheese on sale 10 for a dollar and bread 4 for a dollar. Chicken was $.29/lb if you got it whole (cut up chicken was more for people who had money to throw away. This was also during the time McDonalds had an ad campaign about buying a meal and getting change back from a dollar. For $.95 you could get a regular cheeseburger, fries (when there was only 1 size) and a soft drink. Of course you had to be in a city big enough to have a McDonalds but they could tempt you with their commercials. One day, the exhorbitant prices of today will be the fond memories of your children.😀

Thank you for being realistic and honest about your challenges trying to keep up with your garden and with your life. I don't have a homestead, but have a pretty decent sized garden that keeps me very busy. The amount of tomatoes and other veggies have been a very real challenge for me to keep up with. I loved it when Michelle said enough to her tomatoes and will be sharing with friends. That was such an aha moment for me. Real!!!! I truly love homesteading channels and find them very inspiring, but I often wonder how in the world can two people do so much between their garden, farm, and the animals amongst everything else. I get it when they have a very large family, many hands make light work, but many channels don't show all of the work their families contribute. It wasn't until one channel I watch accidentally exposed they had an intern, who was not only helping with their farm, but also was doing a lot of their planning. I wish more homesteading channels would be truly honest about the true reality of maintaining their farms; small or large. I think you two are amazing! I wish you nothing but the best of success as you grow your farm, life, and channel!

I have to say this is one of my favorite videos. I really enjoy y’all being real all the time. Michelle, you made me laugh a lot especially with the apron part. I couldn’t stop. I didn’t think y’all had mosquitos up North until I saw the technical difficulties. Our season of mosquitos lasts for about 8 months. It’s also awesome to see you give Cody the credit for helping you get through harvest season. What an awesome team. Family fun time is also important. This is a riot, because I pick my blackberries with a quart yogurt container hanging around my neck down my front by a shoelace tied on each side and then around my neck. Really silly-looking...but it works! Then I put the top on, and come back to collect my containers when I'm done picking! And I use tomato cages for my peppers too...

Every year I put up pickled bean salad. I use green beans, wax beans, onion and carrots. It’s easy water bath and gives an excellent side dish staple in the pantry.

Just found you and you are so calm and easy to listen to. I am so jealous of your lifestyle, it looks amazing. I only have a small suburban backyard garden so not enough to be self sufficient for a family if 7. Do you use your greens from the sweet potato and carrots?

In regard to the sweet potatoes: They really like a solid with a lot of sand so that they can expand more easily. That will usually give you the shorter, fatter potatoes you are looking for. Make sure you get masonry sand if at all possible to keep weed seeds to a minimal

Check the classifieds for wire shelving for a great price down the road when you are ready to buy some. I sold a ton years ago when we were redoing our pantry and closets. Should have kept it for future potatoes haha! Great video! You guys are the ultimate homesteading goal!
