100% on the JD Barrel Proof Rye Old Fashioned! Get some fancy bitters, make your own Simple syrup and you will have a cocktail that would easily be $30 at a bar. Just elite.

Green River also a great call, just got the Cask Strength and it is KILLER. Really hoping that a Cask Strength Rye is on the way because I like their regular rye more than their bourbon. Cheers!

I don't own a rare breed. I am holding out for a NCF when I am overseas in a couple of months. Love the Buffalo trace and when its under 35, it's a must buy. Ive become a JD barrel proof fan and the NBC picks are on a whole different level.

Agree with you on the WT Rare Breed ---- just so consistently good and the $$$ remains reasonable in this age of hyper inflation. Funny story how I got my first bottle of Green River. Back in February, I bought an Eagle Rare Store Pick bundle that included a bottle of Black Saddle 12 year and the Green River. I had never heard of Green River so my expectations were quite frankly very low. Doing the math, it worked out that I spent $20 for that bottle and I agree --- its a WINNER! Cheers to all! Keep studying! 😊

Totally agree with rare breed. I hadn’t had any of mine for a long time and I poured some this week and remembered why it was one of the first ones I loved. Still haven’t happened across a JD BP rye yet sadly.

Most of the selections mentioned on this show is, or has been on my shelf. They are very popular indeed. One that is also beginning to gain popularity is Brother's Bond Cask Strength. If I had to guess, I would say that the Brother's Bond family of offerings will be making an impact on the market that will be surprising! Great show as always! Cheers!

Nobody wants to talk about TX Bourbon in Fort Worth and they are an amazing distillery. Some of the better wheated bourbon outside of Kentucky especially for its age given the Texas climate. Waiting for one of the whiskey tube channels to finally discover how good they are.

Fun topic! I mean when you have a Chief Alchemist on staff, you are setting your company up for fun. But I still need time before Macaulay catches up to Tripp, Joe, and Nic…blending-wise. And you (beyond the Sweet Mash picks) turned me on to the the HT Chocolate Malt (so reminds me of the Chocolate Malt o Meal of my youth)…but the Caramel Malt that was right beside it…so good! Got a HT bourbon in Dallas last week…pretty, pretty good. As we live in a more adventurous age, would cutest Challengers-style love triangle go to Green River or Bardstown Origins? Well, all in the family, I guess. And those Still Austin BiBs…but Erin is right on most of the rest of Texas.

Still Austin's bottled-in-bond straight rye (Spring '24 seasonal) is incredible if you ever get a chance to try it. Dark grapes/cola notes for days I almost swore it was a higher end buffalo trace product before the reveal The bourbons are cool, but something about Still Austin rye's always knock it out of the park.

Hard Truth bottles are gorgeous - and the Sweet Mash Rye at least tastes gorgeous too. JD SBBP is going to be my my second glass tonight. It is a beautiful bottle, and the juice inside is enormously good. I'm drinking Still Austin Cask Strength right now, and it's delicious. But I must take issue with you on Texas whiskey. First, Still Austin - the Musician and the Cask Strength anyway - *does* taste like Texas whisky. For something that doesn't try TX bourbon, which tastes like Kentucky, but then why not just buy something from Kentucky. And second, the best whisky I've ever tasted came out of Texas - specifically Balcones Distilling in Waco. I've been three years trying to sort out the complexity of their Pot Still Bourbon, their True Blue barrel proof corn whisky is superb, and even the Baby Blue corn whisky, at only a year old and 94 proof, is more complex and flavorful than a lot of eastern whisky that's six or eight years old. Whisky doesn't have to taste like it came from Tennessee or Kentucky to be good, any more than it has to taste like it came from Scotland or Ireland to be good. Don't compare it to eastern whisky - just judge it on its own merits.

Fair points on Texas whiskey. More specifically, it’s less about the flavor profile and more about the inherent qualities the whiskey takes on when it’s subject to rapid aging due to the intense Trlexas heat. It imparts a harsh edge that just isn’t our jam. Not all Texas whiskey has this quality, and it’s not exactly exclusive to Texas for that matter, but it’s certainly a hallmark found in a lot of Texas whiskey due to the climate. It’s like dark roast vs medium or light roast coffee. A lot of Texas whiskey is like dark roast coffee, and that profile isn’t for everyone.
@WhiskyForBeginners
@WhiskyForBeginners 2 месяца назад
@@stuffandwhiskey I hate all coffee. 🙂 But while I grant that I've not had everything that comes out of Texas, nothing that I have tasted was harsh. And some of the most glorious flavors I've ever had on my tongue have been from Texas whisky.

Six of the nine whiskeys you picked are not available from OLCC in Oregon, so they may as well be allocated because I'll never see them either way. The only one of the three available that I'd agree with is Rare Breed.

Y'all keep beating on Texas whiskey. I live in Texas and must disagree with you. There are many Texas bourbons and ryes which I find superior to Kentucky products. Still Austin, TX, Iron Root, and 1845 are outstanding distilleries. The key to Texas whiskey is to expect bold flavors, as there is nothing subtle about them.
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey 2 месяца назад
It’s just palate preference thing. Some people like dark roast coffee and some prefer a lighter roast for instance. Texas whiskey is the dark roast coffee of the whiskey world, and for us, the heavy flavors induced by the quicker aging time due to the heat don’t quite fit our palates as much as we’d like. Not an indictment on the quality but there is a strong personal preference there.
@Spadg
@Spadg 2 месяца назад
Ironroot definitely. Their Promethean and Harbinger bourbons are superb. Super fruity while still having enough oak to back it up. Super interesting mashbills as well. I think they’ve said that their rye content is only 2-5%, the rest of mashbill being various types of corn.
