Bowed basement walls, I beam install

In this video I go through the steps of installing beams on a bowed block basement wall. First, I found the location that the beams needed to be installed. Next, I removed the cement at the new beam location and install blocking support to the existing floor joist. Last, I install the new I beam then use a screw jack to apply tension to the beam to help support the basement wall. Future videos will show how I dig up the dirt next to the foundation, push the wall back into place and seal the wall from the outside to prevent water penetration.

Wow, just a year ago I couldn't find much videos about bowing walls supporting. Only ads without any useful information. Thank you for sharing this video, I learned a lot and I think I'm ready to fix my really bad basement 😅

@@handylandlord I bought 4inch I beams like the one's you're using. I ordered them with a gray primer coating and I think they were around $118 a piece. I live near Chicago, so everything around here is a bit pricey. What do you normally pay?

Also, do you fill behind the beam with mortar/cement if there's still a gap after jacking?
@handylandlord
@handylandlord 3 года назад
EthanAllen1775 Yes I do. I like to apply pressure with the screw jack. Once I feel all movement is done. I install a piece of metal between the concrete slab and the beam. Cement in the bottom of the beam. Then I fill the gap behind the beam with mortar mix to prevent future movement of the blocks not touching the beam.

I have a drain system installed around the perimeter of my basement that leads to a sump, when installing the I beams could I just leave the drain pipe in place and just work around it? I saw that you cut a type of tile system in this video but I was wondering what you did after that!
@handylandlord
@handylandlord 3 года назад
Jacob Huey yes you should be able to work around the system you have in place as long as there is enough room between the wall and pipe for your beam. Normally, the top of the drain pipe Is flush with the top of the footer. In that case your beam install would be easy. The drain pipe would not get in the way. My situation is a little different the system you saw me cut out was on top of the old clay tile system. I’m planning to install new drain pipe over to the sump pump. I was mostly worried about getting the wall supported before if got any worse. Thanks for watching. I will post more about this basement in the future.

My cinder blick wall is pushed in by 4 inches at the bottom. The bottom course is still in it’s place as it’s up against the cement floor. Do you think we can use this system to push the wall back that far? Soil will be dug out and we’ll place temporary supports to raise joints by a 1/4 inch over head.
@handylandlord
@handylandlord 4 года назад
Definitely you can use this method to push the wall back into place. You may have to push the wall back then reposition the beam and or the jack. I would make sure to support the cinder block wall before digging outside. These screw jacks are the best method I have found to put tension on the beam to push the wall back into place. Just go slow and try to push the wall evenly. Good luck on your project. Keep us updated on how it goes. amzn.to/305NbKU

Justin Herman I excavated because the wall was so badly bowed that I wanted instant results. Also, to seal the wall from the outside and add gravel. In the past, I have installed beams, applied pressure, corrected grade away from the house and seen results typically within a year.

How would you install the top support for beams on a wall like the one behind you at 9:00 with the window, The boards running horizontal not vertical to you overhead?
@handylandlord
@handylandlord 3 года назад
First thing is to check to make sure your beam will fit in between the floor joist and the block wall. I cut blocking to go in between the floor joist at least 3 joist spaces back. Also I add a block between the first floor joist and the beam. Then, I glue and lag bold a 2x8 to the bottom of the floor joist screwing into the joist and the blocking that was just added. Install the screw jack and apply pressure like in the video. Hope this helps.
@adamthomas9279
@adamthomas9279 4 месяца назад
So once the jack is pressing the beam against the wall do you pour the concrete and wait for it to dry then remove the jack? So if you wanted to bust out an entire wall in a day you would prolly need a few of those jacks.
@seviusbenz2016
@seviusbenz2016 3 года назад
I’ve been looking at videos on how to brace my wall and I’ve come across what’s called a power brace system. They put the beam flush to the wall at the bottom and just use angle iron bolted to the floor to stop the beam from moving back and at the top have a 1 inch thick bolt pushing into the beam going through angle iron fastened into the ceiling truss and slowly tightening over time. Do you think this is also a suitable method or am I better off to push at the bottom and set the beams in concrete ? If you google image search wall power brace you can see what I’m talking about

Instead of tearing up your concrete. Why not weld an end plate to the beam with holes in it for anchor bolts and match drill once the beam is under load from the jack? Are you worried the slab would not be thick enough, or the bolts not strong enough?
@handylandlord
@handylandlord 3 года назад
Casey Rohde the concrete along the edge was thin because of a previous sump install that was done, so in my case it wouldn’t have worked. I have seen this type of install before, but have never used it.

I was quoted 23k for my 63' poured basement wall excavation and push, 13 braces and 2 earth anchors, seal wall, drain tile with 80% gravel backfill. East central Kansas where our soil is sticky clay. Wall is leaning in 3-4". I'm thinking of renting equipment and doing it myself. Comments appreciated.
@handylandlord
@handylandlord 4 года назад
Rick Dean Actually doesn’t sound like a bad price. Having beams installed in Ohio normally cost around $300 to $500 per beam installed. Most of the basements in my area are block walls. I only own one property with poured walls. Equipment or not it’s a lot of manual labor. Would not recommend hand digging haha. Do u know if the wall is leaning in at the top or does it have cracks and bowing?

@handylandlord 4 года назад
I am not by anyway trying to offend you, instead give you my honest opinion based on the info you gave me. The amount, 63' has me concerned that's a ton of digging, along with cracks everywhere. I would support the wall before digging with any machinery. I'm not sure I would take on this project alone if you decide to give it a go. I do feel you are on the right path with excavating the exterior and sealing the wall. Some companies will claim to be able to fix the problem from the inside and I feel that is false with poor results from my past experiences. Good luck on your decision and I hope this helps.

@handylandlord
@handylandlord 3 года назад
Tosik Dwane Permits depend on where you live. But more than likely yes. For the water meter. I normally open the hole around the pipe coming through the block on both sides to give the wall room to move around the pipe without messing up the pipe coming through the block. Just a heads up depending on how bad the wall is you may have to replace it.
