FANTASTIC! This video topic pulls together many of the best counseling concepts I've discovered in my practice over decades. In a nutshell, the client has got to "get off of their own back" and begin keeping good boundaries. Your video about Bowen Systems outlines concise practical concepts to reorient and revitalize clients and relationships. Well done!

Wow! Your presentation was so clear and compact that it explained more than another online lecture I viewed for 30 minutes. I love your use of drawings in conjunction with your explanations. The details you gave filled in gaps of understanding I experienced after reading a textbook chapter on Bowen. Thank you!

Fabulous, organized, concise instruction! I particularly appreciate the way you addressed the criticisms and challenges of the framework while providing solution to incorporating that awareness into practice, followed by highlights of your affinity for the Bowen lens. I have clinical class role plays coming up, and I feel much better equipped and inspired to use Bowenian Family Therapy skills. Checking out your channel’s other videos, now, thanks!

Another fantastic video. It's like a tiny lecture, all wrapped up in a single video! The written format really helps with comprehension and retention on my part, since I learn by reading; and you mentioned specific papers by year and name which is good for further reading. You also managed to encapsulate the "gist" of most of the criticisms of the theory concisely and informatively. You must be the best teacher ever! I bet you're popular with your students.

Watched in great detail. with notes, again. At video timing 4m09secs, the white board shows #2 T. vs S.; #3 F. vs I. Together, Separate. Feeling, Intellect from 1m26sec. Watched other videos on Bowen Theory as well. Wikipedia: Murray Bowen (Lucius Murray Bowen[1]) was born in 1913 as the oldest of five and grew up in the small town of Waverly, Tennessee, where his father was the mayor for some time. Born: 31 January 1913, Waverly, Tennessee, United States Died: 9 October 1990, Chevy Chase, Maryland, United States Probably Christian upbringing, rather than Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, etc. He served five years as a surgeon in the US military, in Europe, rising to the rank of Major. This explains his Individual autonomy stance, rather than flexible team-role stance. It also explains his heavy serious work tone, with focus on the therapist, in a tight, intense, therapeutic role. No fun, no play, no role tests-flexibilities-rehearsals. My careers in community development showed me the need for the involvement of other "therapeutic" interventions. The Bowen therapy should be reduced to theory, for the use of adult-biased "play" therapy. Examples are playing "games" as shown in the "ELLEN" television show (Ellen Lee DeGeneres), but with a Bowen therapy bias.

Kirk, genius idea! I could have used this during FOO! Any chance of you doing similar ones with other therapy theories/modalities? As a CFT student I'm finding the need to get a basic understanding of some of the theories not included in the CFT curriculum, e.g. psychodynamic, existential, humanistic, Gestalt, non-Western.

Good day with regards to family therapy how would you use it in this scenario...Peter and Julie Greene is a married couple in their late thirties. They have been married for 9 years and have one daughter, Cindy (8 years old) and one son JJ (5 years old). Peter has another son, Arnu (11 years old) from a previous relationship whom only visits them during the weekends. Cindy is doing well academically and is loved by teachers and peers. JJ is reported to be a delight at pre-school and is a popular boy who gets invited to many birthday parties. However, Peter and Julie do report that they experience some acting out behaviour with him over weekends when Arnu comes to visit. JJ will have serious temper tantrums and has recently even hit and kicked the dog. This behaviour is only reported at home and over weekends and the teachers have never complained about anything like this. Arnu has formally been diagnosed with autism from age three and has recently been started on new medication. Peter is 38 years old and has a master’s degree in engineering. He works full time for Eskom and has to spend long times away from home. His relationship with Arnu’s mother ended when Arnu was a baby and when they initially started to speculate about a diagnosis of autism. Arnu’s mother became depressed and blamed Peter for Arnu’s condition, and therefore ended their relationship. By this time, Peter was already involved with Julie. Peter’s childhood years were characterised by violence, physical abuse and absent parents. At an early age he decided that he will never be dependent of anyone and has worked extremely hard to achieve all sorts of academic and work related awards. Julie works as a full time paediatric nurse at the local hospital and is able to work three days and be home four days each week. She reports that she enjoys working, but at times feels overwhelmed with Arnu’s needs (over weekends) and raising her own two children, especially when Peter’s work require him to work lengthy hours. She actually would prefer if Arnu can only visit once or month or so. The situation with Arnu and JJ lead to relationship problems between Peter and Julie. Eskom’s HR division requested a session for Peter. When he came for the first appointment, Julie accompanied him into your office. They report marital unhappiness. Julie listed all her concerns which mainly is about Arnu’s visits and Peter’s aggressive behaviour. Peter on the other hand, feels that Julie can be as nasty and mean as a wild cat. He complains that she growled at him for something that he forgot to do around the house. Her response caused him to be edgy, nervous and uncomfortable and yes, he admits that he reacted and slapped her through the face. The couple wants to know what is wrong with JJ and if you would also be able to see him. They furthermore would like your opinion on Arnu’s new medication. Lastly they ask if you can provide them with some practical tips regarding sibling rivalry and the management of an autistic child.

I disagree with Bowenian Therapy being the main approach. As a theoretical accessory to other therapies - ok. On its own, it relies too much on intellect words, calm attitudes, etc. Injection of emotional, social and "playing" content is needed, especially for lightly committed participants. Variations on "play therapy" might work best. Time-out from heavy intellectual content is needed often. Better integration of intellect to emotions is usually required. This takes time & effort. This is best done outside of the immediate therapeutic interaction. Most of the therapeutic work & benefits needs to be done outside of the immediate therapeutic interaction. It's many decades since I was in "practice". But the correct therapeutic interaction has yet to be created imho.
