wow, i knew these fish are aggressive, but i had no idea how violent and efficient they are as suction feeders... also, the way it moves and stops its dorsal fin in a wavelike motion to move forward and backward, or hold itself in the water column without having to turn its body is so neat. i dont think ive ever seen a fish do that besides eels.
Bowfin are cool. I've gotten a couple on catfish rigs with cut bait. What awesome footage. I like how it just hangs around for a bit before it finds the crayfish.
Don't know where you caught this one but they grow to the size of my leg here in Florida and I'm 6'3". I know some of the old timers eat them but I never could get past the smell when cleaning them. Great fun to catch on a med/lightweight rig though!
Thanks man. I was going to make some ocean spear fishing videos but the water was way too cloudy last week. Next year I will for sure. We'll try to get some good steelhead footage from this fall's run.
These are one of my favorites, i almost sunk my boat one time catching dogfish! I was sight fishing them from the dock and caught like 3 before i realized that the plug wasnt in! Lol what a blast! FISH ON!
There are so many bowfin in the Mississippi River, areas that were once loaded with panfish are now almost completely void of them. We went out one night, lights on the boat, between them and gar, they will feast like piranhas.
Excellent job with setting up the camera and catching the choipique saying 'Cheese". Nosey bream are always the first guys on the scene. One question if you don't mind answering for me. Are they covered in slime? The ones we catch in Louisiana are covered in a heavy thick coat of slime.
idk what setup you were using looked like just a splitshot and hook from the video lol, but if you throw a sinker on then a barrel swivel and some of the normal eagle claw hooks onto the barrel swivel, you will be able to feel him bite that cray alot earlier, which really helps when using plastic bait to set the hook before he spits it out. great catch never caught a bowfin im big into catfish though
Felt Bad for the Crayfish. He scared away the Bluegills and it looked good for awhile but he made a mistake in moving when the bowfin came within range. I THINK If he "froze" it would be possible that the bowfin would have moved on. Bowfin are a freshwater relative of the Cod.
