In this video, we discuss John Bowlby's concept of a critical period of attachment. His hypothesis is that outside of this critical period, it is impossible for a child to develop a secure attachment.
Bowlby suggests that this critical period of attachment closes at around two years old.
Whilst there is some research to support Bowlby's concept of a critical period, especially in studies of animals, there is also plenty of research that challenges Bowlby's idea and suggests it is possible to build secure attachment beyond this set period of development, though not without its challenges.

thank you so much for your insight into Bowlbys Theory in particular. Its such a facinating area of psychology, I've worked with many children who have faced trauma in their lives and I can see some strong correlations to the establishment of early connections with a primary care giver.
