I loved how Packy was talking about how hard it was to bowl on wood while bowling on a pair that had an overlane sign featuring someone who threw an 878 series.
Does my heart good to see one of these on wood every now and then. There are skills you develop on wood that you just can't approximate on synthetics, no matter how they're set up. And this is our history, our roots as a sport. I don't think you gave yourself proper credit for this showing. This was harder than you probably think, especially for someone who doesn't seem to have a lot of background on these conditions. I think that speaks well of your skillset that you were able to post this kind of finish.
This is so true. One of my favorite things about wood lanes, is also one of the worst parts about wood lanes. Like here in Florida, if it's raining before they oil the lanes, if any of the moisture from outside in the air gets into the center, it makes guessing the lanes almost impossible. The oil will have areas that will puddle up in certain parts, and you have to figure out how to avoid those spots on the lane making for a fun shot, that will also piss you off.
I bowled on wood lanes beginning in 1979 and changed to synthetic in 1998. It is like the difference between water skiing on choppy water or glass. Each wood lane is unique making changing lanes more difficult.
I agree. My local lanes have 2 lane sets that are night and day. 15&16 and 7&8. Night and day in league play. Then there's my old home lanes. Lane 4 has a good lean to the left. You could be the world's straightest bowler and hook on that lane. I have to bring plastic and come up the back to try to put it in the sweet spot.
I honestly loved just watching Packy take shot after shot and predicting whether or not the ball would strike. I hope you get some kind of cash for placing third. Great job!
Fun event to watch, no denying that! I wish more PBA events would be contested on wood, just because it’s a challenge that many youngsters like yourself don’t get to experience very often :) Great bowling btw
The house I bowl at actually uses wood lanes, and one of the other ones that’s really close to it, also has wood lanes. I like playing up the middle or the outside.
Love all the bowling footage! I think I was getting physically exhausted from watching Packy bowl so many games lol... 3rd place not so bad considering you were at the train station early in the video... 😃
12:30 it looked like Packy noticed how well his ball rolled off that spot and decided to aim there. I could be wrong lol but it was cool to see the wheels turning after that.
My old home center (RIP Van Nest Lanes) was old school wood. I love that house that you bowled in. Very old school. Road trip there may be in order for me.
Enjoyed you guys this past week. Didn't get to see much action at Century but was there all weekend volunteering with the Booster Club at Western Branch. New to the channel, looking forward to more videos! We hope to have you back!
I use a hammer magenta urethane over seas black hammer and a rico drilled venom shock from motiv bowling. At milwaukie bowl. Home of Dave husted pba hall a famer
@@traviskirk3834 how is Milwaukee bowl? The Pandemic is/was tough on California and Oregon bowling centers. Also, I used to use a blocked weighted black u dot. I miss that ball. 🥲. I had good success with a pin down rapid fire. We have synthetic overlays now.
It's good i love the feel of milwaukie bowl when you throw a ball on the wood lanes the crash of the pins. It is heaven. Now i use motiv all the way all six in my Arsenal are motiv.
i love bowling on wood with some heavy fresh oil throw it up the outside and watch it slide right in the pocket, the only downside to wood is once its burnt up its over with lol the house i bowl in has been using the same wood lanes since 1954 and i love um to death
I have an old Danger Zone that's amazing on Wood lanes. I have s fully plugged Mike Aulby MVP which was a remake of the danger zone. 2 piece, medium RG, High Flare. Sometimes you have to combat wood with the balls of it's time.
Lol @ the hair styles Packy. My centre in the UK back in the 90s was wood and I loved them. There was an uproar when they ripped them up and put in synthetic
Hell yeah Packy good bowling man keep it up. I'm not sure where you are in Virginia but one of my favorite bowling alleys was in Stanton Virginia. They were a wood house but they also eventually went to a synthetic Lane unfortunately. Keep up the good bowling and it looks like your mentals were in good order today
Packy, the Wood is way different lol. You busted my local friend Zachary Tackett from the tourny. I arrived just after yall started the round of 8. Wish i could've gotten there to see you 2 cross. Would've been epic. Good bowling and very nice meeting you.
The 2 hander just needed a little more loft on his shots, setting the ball down on wood is why alot of people leave flat 10s or see the ball check up early. I loved bowling on wood lanes, my hometown lanes just switched to New pro anvil a few years ago.
Love wood lanes. I grew up on that. Just keep your hand out of it, let the lane bring it back. Something like Track Heat or 900 Global Afterburner is good there.
Was going to say the same thing. We called it the "dump shot" where I grew up. Back when I threw one-handed, you would just start with your hand out from behind the ball, almost a suitcase delivery. Very little lift on the ball and try to feed it about one arrow over from wherever you laid it down (i.e., if you were targeting 15, run it out to 10). The idea was to get a hook/set look from the ball. If you did it right, the only real question was whether you were going to carry the corners.
Wood lanes reminds of the good old, old days. I played on lanes that had human pin setters. Every Sunday, they would set up spares for you to practice on. Now I wince every time someone lofts the ball.
@@TheHouseBowling When I say old, old, I'm talking early sixties. My parents got me started when I was in the eighth grade. It was very popular with the working class.
Great video but I have to admit me and my Youth League mates hated Wood Lanes because Oil gets dry easily and we had low average on those. After that center was burned down, we moved to another center which is our current home center today that had Synthetic Lanes and we bowled so much better.
Bowling on wood is old school bowling..... old fashioned urethane is the only way to go.... and with that i mean NOT the current generation of "urethane" balls..... .... I grew up on woodlanes...... Love it...
Also I hear you packy, there’s a two handed at the house and he struggles on the wood lanes. It’s Logan lanes in Lincoln IL, and Red Wing Bowl in Atlanta IL
I like hooking for spares, there's only 3 lanes you need to be in for most spares. Splits are a different story because you need to be more accurate, but still you can increase your chances by knowing your hook lanes.
Having been semi-pro on wood and nearly going pro about the time the synthetic lanes came along and completely screwed up my game I understand your frustration making the switch. You did well though. I much prefer wood even now.
Packy, the difference between Wood and Synthetic Lanes is how the lanes Breakdown during bowling. Wood down the lane, lane oil get absorbed into the Wood and hooks more the Back Half of the Lane. On Synthetic, using Reactive balls Dry up the Front part of the lane and lane oil get carried down the lane and the ball does not hook as much.
I'm just a typical house bowler but I prefer wood lanes. My house I grew up bowling in and have averaged 223 the last 4 years, on a house shot, is wood. Not sure if the left side would be good or bad with old wood lanes. lol. Good bowling guys.
Best ball for wood lanes in my opinion is a hammer tour hybrid. It’s got enough push down. And it holds all the way. Lay down on 15 out to 1. Works for every pattern it doesn’t matter
I bowled on wood lanes all the time in many different bowling centers until I quit around 1990. On some oil patterns the lanes were very easy. On some oil patterns the lanes were hard. It depended on how the lanes were oiled and whether the house or tournament director wanted lower scores or higher scores. I preferred the lanes not to be easy. I did prefer oil and did not do well on very dry lanes.
Yes, I quit in 1988, determining the same thing you observed in 1990. They put out a particular shot, and selected only a few to inform them where it was.
consistent ball speed and proper rotation is the key to wood lanes I see several times you will throw a double then in you third attempt your ball decreases or increases in speed
@@TheHouseBowling sometimes you need to move your feet but not the way you guys move. Its called old school which I was a very good professional instructor for several years
I miss wood Lanes. It was so upsetting when the last wood house in my area went to synthetic Lanes. Wood Lanes will make a bowler out of you. It will force you to learn how to adjust and search for oil. You will also learn how to Loft over the gutter cap and find new hand positions to get your balls to work on wood Lanes.
@@TheHouseBowling it's been probably 15 years since I've bowled on Wood lanes unfortunately. They are very hard that's what I liked about them. You have to adjust and move your line just about every shot. I'm a fan of having to use your talent and your skill to bowl not just power and see how many strikes I can throw. I know these wood lanes are hard but I hope you guys appreciate bowling on them because they just aren't around anymore. Before my accident I bowled 4 leagues and tournaments every weekend. I would drive 4 hours for a tournament with a tough shot when my local bowling alley had a tournament with a house shot. I'm not a big fan of the carry contest tournaments. Yeah it's fun throwing a lot of strikes but when all you have to do is throw it right and watch it hook back there's not much talent involved. It's been a lot of fun watching everybody in the house get better and better. All of you guys are starting to kick ass and it's a lot of fun to watch keep it up fellas. And Kyle get well soon bud I miss seeing you on the lanes.
Love this! When I was in high school, our home bowling center was all wood lanes and we literally could not lose at home. No one could bowl on wood lanes. Of course, we ended up losing in tournament play on synthetics but it was a good ride!!
Wow those heads look fried! I like your lofting strategy to get over that. Did you ever try throwing a short pin pearl/hybrid or a 5" pin down to get a reactive ball to push through that part? @Packy - its time to add your thumb back into the ball as a two hander man so you can really spin it when you need to :)
@@TheHouseBowling I understand where you're coming from. I waited until the off season to switch. For me, it brought my pap from 5 over and 2 down to 5 over and 1.25 up. It also changed my tilt from basically 0 to 7°. Now my balls actually get down the lane instead of always reading early and burning up. The addition of my thumb helps me create more changes to my release than before as well. I haven't recorded any major change to my rev rate. Its not for everyone, but for me it was a positive change, my average went up and I get more carry and pin action.
