Bowling with a PARTICLE Coverstock Bowling Ball

Pro shop operator here, fun fact, particle covers never went anywhere, they just stopped advertising them, and they got a lot better

I remember throwing particle balls roughly 20 years ago and your description is completely different from what I saw. They were very smooth, like a stronger urethane. Particle was the predecessor to the nano coverstocks we have today. Particle balls had tiny jagged "particles" in the coverstock that made the ball grip the lane more. The problem is the jagged edges wore down quickly and the particles would become smooth, severely decreasing the performance of the ball permanently. By the time manufacturers fixed the problem, particle had developed a bad reputation so it was essentially rebranded as nano.

They were never hook monsters they were designed to be heavy rollers and get traction in oil. Very little movement but could still hit. The problem was people were like today it don't move a ton it can't be for oil so then would try on lighter oil and it would hit like marshmellow because it rolled out 10ft down the lane

as someone who deals with thumb injuries from just bowling in general, but i wanted you to know i really respect how you powered through even with the ripped thumb, that pain is no joke for real and the focus to power through is commendable.

I remember my Pro Shop driller telling me particle balls with use wear down the studs, i.e. particle down making the ball react more like solid reactive. He said you can rejuvenate the ball by sanding the ball that exposes the particles more again. I had a particle ball back in the day and remember this discussion. I moved on to non-particle shortly after this discussion. The ball you bought that was pre-owned might react more like a non-particle ball on some shots but the inside target balls are telling. Thanks for the video and the intro was fantastic!

The greatest particle ball and arguably one of the greatest balls ever made - Storm ElNino XiT - had me on pace for a 300 when I was very young until the pin setter chewed it up in half and I was left with a ball split in two. Unstoppable ball on wood lanes.

The weapon of mass bias was one of Mo's GOATS.

Some particle balls were great from visionary bowling which is now out of business but my dad was on test staff with them from 2003 from what I remember and the gargoyle balls were awesome. The green and the slate blue gargoyle. The slate blue was a urethane ball and the core was used in the glowing amulet which was a collector's edition ball and was a hard urethane ball .

I had the Ebonite Matrix TPS 2 (TPS stood for Textured Particle System) which was made in 2000. I thought it was great.

I have a Storm La Niña partlcle that used to be owned by PBA pro Tommy Delutz. Back then (early 2000s) I thought it was OK. Maybe I should break it out next time i practice.

I used to love particle balls in the early 2000s. The Columbia 300 Icon 300 was my favorite. I still have a Visionary Granite Gargoyle, and Visionary Centaur AMB that are both particle. Very smooth pieces that really bit early and gave you that midlane read when everything else was too clean. Really stopped the violent backends in wood houses too.

I have the jolt partical by storm its a great ball for longer patterns i like it and is really controllable

I have a bw legend that is supposed to be reactive but ngl it does damn near the same exact thing when it sees oil, or rotation

My highest sanctioned game (288) was actually shot with the AMF NightHawk Menace, which IIRC, was a particle ball. I definitely remember it being a pretty off the spot motion.

I remember back in the 90s I had a ball I didn't have that ball but I had one that was a particle covers doctors made by Columbia 300 it was a complete chaos it was a greenish color ball I don't have it anymore but it was a hit or miss ball

I had a Weapon of Mass Bias. Loved that ball. Our team called it The Battleship and it hit like a bomb.

there were some good particles out there back in the early 2000s. The Danger Zone HP line (HPD and HPH) were good pieces and were pretty popular with players when they came out. The HPH was a particular favourite of mine and if I ever ran across one in good shape I would buy it.

I have a dynothane element, one of the first particle balls. It’s the best ball I’ve ever used. The call reaction stays the same for a very long period of time and I don’t have to move for 2 games

I liked teh Lane#1 Super Carbide Bomb a lot back in the day :) I know my old proshop guy didn't like resurfacing the covers.

I threw my 1st 300 with a partical ball. It was the Storm X-Factor, Ace. It was a pretty sweet ball when I had it. It's 20 years old now

I had that ball and loved it. I knew a guy that had a total shock and awe that just killed with it.

Is that ball drilled for a left hander? Cg looks left of the grip. If the mass bias is on the left side of the grip its going to kill the reaction.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s I had a Brunswick Swamp Monster, two Ebonite Apex Adrenalines and a Storm XFactor Trifecta, all of which were particle balls. I thought they were all great balls at the time. I still have two of them that I may have to break out and see how they compare to today’s technology.

As I recall, they used scuff pads to bring the surface back. No resurfacing.

Im really not going to lie, this ball looks.. actually pretty good. If you had 1500-2000 grit surface & proper fitment, this ball would actually be killer on a more fitting condition. This ball just suffers from the exact same things any slow symmetrical solid would now a days. The Hammer NU is a pretty close example of this, its fantastic in the track, lackluster when you miss inside, and can be quiet catastrophic when you miss to the dry. Very urethane-y type reaction. I'm very high RPM, so I think I would like it.

Never really had a problem with particle being over/under back in the day. biggest issue is the ball you're throwing has one of the strongest covers ever made, so it's hooking entirely in the midlane then rolling out. a particle pearl is way better for a house shot.

had an ebonite tombstone, tossed a 299 with it, eventualy it seemed to just get worn out, not all that much different than everything else.

I think it gets overlooked how good you are with the 1000 different spans and grips you use in these videos lol

4:24 bro the ball is a whole ball size higher on your second swing than your first. You should try bringing the windmill back into play so you can keep your swing down lol. You're much more consistent when your swing isn't so high above your head.

I bought a particle ball back in the 1990's and it didn't even last a season. The cover was so soft that it scratched and chipped apart.

First of all, Particle coverstocks do not suck. They are still used today in many balls, most notibally balls by Radical such as Informer and Spy and many others by brands such as Brunswick. If you look under a jeweler's loop at the Purple Hammer coverstock you can see it also uses this technology but on a microscopic level. I have one of the most rare Particle balls ever made and I think a cooler name than your Weapon of Mass Bias, I have the "Midnight Scorcher Particle Urethane." Here is how they describe it and I can tell you from personal experience this is exactly true and is completely the opposite you what you said about particle balls: "As oil carries down to the bowler's break point area, there is little effect on the ball because the difference between the ball's reaction on oil and dry is much smaller than with any other ball. This allows the bowler to make fewer moves to adjust to the changing lane conditions and often lets the player have more of an opportunity to play a shot closer to what they prefer instead of always being forced to play what the lanes dictate."
