Hey all, back again with another stand alone PB video which are not too frequent. This milestone carries big significance with my time trial history.
The elusive 2:21 on Bowser's Castle no-glitch. This has been the fleeting goal for over 10 years now. I had splits for this time back in late 2010 & during 2011, had numerous WR fails here in late 2010 to 2011 era back before Chelsea's 2:22.471 was dethroned. Unfortunately, I never got the job done, being one of the tracks that have been bittersweet that I never realized my WR potential on back when I was in my prime. I am certainly no where near WR level contention anymore in modern day 10 years later, but can still put up some decent laps that have been on the low 2:21 territory side of things without the Zeke ramp or Suiryu ramps.
This is notoriously one of MKW's hardest tracks and categories to TT, and for good reason. There's so much tech involved in many parts of the track, with not so much downtime during most of each lap. At the advanced level, a lot of factors are certainly controllable, but other factors can be "human RNG" or seemingly too luck based to have some consistency on. Certainly a level of bias on my side, but I'd wager to say most high level time trialers in the player base would agree that the 2:21 mark on Bowser's Castle is one of the hardest targets to reach for the aforementioned reasons. With all that in mind, I am more than elated to set this time with so much riding behind my own personal history on the track. It is no Worldwide Top 10, country record or even WR, but with how pivotal of a milestone this is for me, I was happy enough to upload this in a stand alone time trial video.
Lap 1: 47.315 - a far better lap than it was. Biggest time loss was the halfpipe recovery to wheelie before the trick ramp leading into the spiral before the end of the lap. I got unlucky on the last turn this lap, along with every lap in this run. If you don't get a no-air last turn, it is much harder to manage as it can be a run ender since it limits you so much to taking a tight last turn and getting your wheelie to actually come out, and if that doesn't happen, you lost so much time and you're so far wide you can't catch the tight geysers without surrendering a good chunk of time to get it. I was pretty early into my session on this day and just wanted to get some play time past lap 1 so I kept going. I only get one trick at the end. All together, this lost a healthy 200 to 300 milliseconds compared to an optimal last turn, with 3 good geysers, which I was more than fast enough to do.
Lap 2: 47.216 - as with lap 1, a far better lap than what it was. I got an excellent low jump to start the lap with 3 solid carpet tricks. I lost some minor time in the halfpipe to beginning of the spiral section. The spirals on all laps in this run weren't perfect, but were very good. I again get an unlucky last turn, costing me to go for an alternative trick strategy and had to turn too much in my wheelie from how far wide the turn chucked me. This again cost a healthy 100 to 200 milliseconds compared to an optimal last turn and far better geyser tricks if I had the proper alignment.
Lap 3: 47.312 - excellent lap 3 performance given the pace. Not as good of a low jump as lap 2 but still a good low jump to start the lap. The first half was very strong. I almost got too high of a trick at the halfpipe, as with this pace, the pinwheel is smack in the middle, unable to sweep across the right side without getting lucky, and nearly too far left to make it at all. Had to sacrifice some time here, and nearly lost it all on the trick thereafter. If you notice closely, I barely hit the actual castle wall and the grated race track. If you smack too far into the castle wall, you lose a ton of speed and can lose a run overall here. I tricked too early and had a high & far trick but got a lucky recovery. A 3rd unlucky last turn, but held the nerves down to have 3 good geysers to clutch the 2:21.
I'll try to push my limits here and see what more I can do. Regardless, EXTREMELY happy with this. Thanks for watching.
