Without a doubt, box turtles are some of the planet’s most beloved species. Learn some fun facts about 6 different box turtles types in this education video!
At 5, my Dad and I found my first Box Turtle. 61 years later they are still in my home, only now, I live in the Yucatan of Mexico. Miss the Eastern's and other US varieties. Super video again! Thanks
Got my first pet which was a box turtle during my 5th grade! Over 20 years later I still got it, and love it all the same (actually more so). Will say though.. Its eerie how they seem like they forever frozen in time. My 3toed boxy is almost the exact same as it was back when I first got it all those years ago.
Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the first upload of this video but here it is for real this time! Thank you so much to everyone who was leaving comments the first time around. I greatly appreciate every single one of you.
Hey there I just found your channel! My friend found an eastern box turtle and brought it home. It’s in an big empty water trough about 3 feet by 3 feet with soil. He put mealworms tomatoes and lettuce in there with it. The turtle looks sluggish. Is it true that they die when brought home from the wild??? Thanks buddy these videos are really great 👍

@@minibuns5397 you don't even know how to care for turtles or know that you should leave them in the wild yet you are organizing people to create turtle hybrids to release into the Everglades? Are you fucking serious...
Speaking of escaping three toed box turtles, the way I got my girl was in San Diego she was running across an extremely busy street in the middle of a large suburb covered in mud. I hope it was an escape situation and not that someone released her. I've had her for 20 years and she is awesome.
Omg I made a pond in my neighbors backyard and we found 5 of them hanging out eating strawberries. Only 1 of them we knew Franklin the rest just popped up out of nowhere.
I saw an Eastern Box Turtle here in Durham while out walking early one morning! He was beautiful with orange polka dots on his legs and a batik looking carapace. He'd fallen off a curb near a wooded elementary school yard. I was afraid of him, but managed to pick him up and place him in the cool, dewy grass figuring he'd do better minus the concrete on what was forecast to be a scorching day. I didn't know he was a member of an endangered species until looking him up on youtube. Thanks for your video!
Lol ..I’m 61 and love turtles at least 50 years. Never been but until last week. He bit me twice! He would bite me more if I got close to him. He’s flat out scary and I rescued him from this concrete drainage ditch that goes out to the bay. His head /neck was swollen where he couldn’t pull his head in. I removed 8 bot fly maggots. He’s still mad at me or just hates me . I thought this is a rare thing for sure. But he’s like my shitzu, he has that mouth opened and head high and ready to chomp! He’s pretty big,2. Hard to hold him with one hand. He’s good now back to nature…..
Absolutley fantastic episode. The most comprehensive video I have ever seen on box turtles and a pleasure to watch. I have messaged you in instagram but I appreciate you have a lot of followers so it wont be easy to even realise. I would really like a little bit if advice on building and sorting an out door enclosure for eastern box turtles and spotted turtles in the uk if you have a chance. Thanks again! P.s I'd love videos on care/diet and natural history of all the species you keep but especially spotteds!
Your channel inspires me I am starting my own channel under construction, boxturtlecultre. I have 3 three toed box turtles and have been trying to get a juvenile diamondback terrapin since March without having any luck, have any ideas. Keep doing what you're doing it helps.
Just want to say it another time lol :) I love the Floridas, only have seen three in my life here. One time one was bobbing down a river, struggling to swim to shore, on the river we were boating on. The current was too fast for me to grab it and put it back onto land. The surrounding habitat was perfect box turtle habitat, lush, marshy, forest. Still wonder why it went into a river with a current. Hope it managed to return to land safely, and not too far away from its home range.
Very educational I actually love them all . Can you show a proper Chinese box turtle hatchling set up this is what I want to get next . Thanks in advance 👀💚🐢🐢🐢
My dog brought me an Eastern box turtle today from the woods. Thank goodness it was okay and quickly went back to the brush after 20 minutes. I guess she brought it to me as a gift lol.
I grew up in queens ny but when I was a kid I used to love goin to my cousins house in Suffolk county Long Island because we would go in the woods and find box turtles, toads, garter snakes and salamanders sadly where they lived is now developed so I doubt there’s too many left this was in the 80’s
We have a captive bred 3 toed, ornate, and eastern. They are all friends and live together. The eastern (Sparky - F) is the most inquisitive and outgoing, the ornate (Shelly - M) is the most amorous, and the 3 toed (Koopa - F) is by far the most shy but also the most careful and soulful. They are all adorable and very intelligent. Smarter than most people would imagine, I think. They are also beautiful and enjoyable creatures. I really enjoyed your video because it reminded me of our babies
Can i just say thank you i was so confused to why the babies weren't as colorful and i was also not sure of what natural substances to put in there tank and i know to put a nice water place for my turtle and look forward to him getting bigger
Your videos have put me to ease as my eastern box turtle has went underground for winter in her out door pin! I have had her for 12 years now and this is the first! They truly are amazing!!!! Ps I'm in Florida , so I guest this is cake for her 😆
Hello Great channel. Question. Iv always had a found joy for Box and wood titles I have the out door enclosure for them how am I able to own a pair of each?.
A box turtle laid her eggs on the side of a hill here where water flows heavily during rain. I put bricks around the nest so that hopefully they won’t wash away. It hasn’t rained here in over a week so should I pour some water over the nest so they don’t dry out?
I hope someone notices this as I’m not sure where else to find answers, so here it goes: I came across this video going down a box turtle rabbit hole. I had always wanted to find one in the wild, but I’ve had no such luck. It led me to notice something I often see on range maps for box turtles. In the video at the time stamp 12:11 there is an area along the south central edge of Louisiana that seems devoid of box turtles. I have field guides from the 80’s that show there are three box turtles that can be found around that area that overlap one another but shows the same devoid area around Vermilion Bay. Could anyone explain this? Why is it that is the one place where box turtles seemingly refuse to go? It can’t be that it’s too dry, or there would be ornate or three-toed box turtles. It can’t be that it’s too wet or there’d be gulf coast box turtles. So what’s going on?
Kuji Chagulia As I stated at the begin of the video, any subspecies not included was because we did not currently have them in our facility but when and if I have them again we will cover them in future episodes and I only use my own content of animals I have in my possession. I have kept ornate and desert box many times and that’s why there are photos of ornates in the Florida box turtle part of the episode but they were from the past.
My box turtle is really different, we can see 3 turtles in one turtle, what type of species they are, and where they live, and how to feed and take care of them?? Please say
at what rate do 3 toed box turtles generally grow? I have a 2 year old box turtle in seemingly good health she’s very active and her shell is very smooth because I have her outside. She weighs about 90 grams which hasn’t changed much in the last 4 months. I’m wondering if I should feed her more. I feed her twice a week generally either worms or crickets and then the third time she gets fed cantaloupe or strawberry. So 2/3 bugs 1/3 fruit.
Chris my female three toed box turtle is mounting my male... I know I’m not confused because I have had them for years and have seen them in the opposite positions.. Is this common or..... what?
@@GardenStateTortoise Thanks Chris I watched the vid where you said she could be holding and I separated them for awhile. Love the channel. We’ve met at a couple of expos in Pennsylvania and you were always friendly and helpful with the info.
I didn’t know that either but I just saw a male “fan” the other day. First I thought he was having a BM, then he did it again so I thought “prolapse, 911!!!”…I looked it up and he’s just fine😉👍🏻🤦♀️
I got a problem. I bought 4 captive bred Terrapene. c. carolina babies last year in august. I cannot get them to eat properly, they may only some mealworms sometimes. I tried everything, berries, green leafs, liver, cat food, boiled chicken, shrimps...they don't eat anything. They just run and hide. I covered all sides of the terrarium so they don't get scared. Got the right temperature, lighting, humidity. Can anyone get me some tips?
Get some baby food carrots and disslove it in their water dish which I assume is big enough to climb into. Be sure to clean it back to water after a day. Also, get some vitamin dust for their food. Mine love boiled eggs. They need a cool spot and a warm spot and reptile light bulbs.
As babies they are almost strictly carnivores. Try chopping up earthworms and keeping the turtles in very shallow water with high humidity. I explain this in detail in my newest episode that’ll be out this weekend on this channel. Stay tuned.
You’d have to locate a captive bred male and get them on a proper annual cycle. Box turtles if any kind respond to seasonal triggers and often that means giving them at least some period of dormancy.
Can someone please tell me how can I keep a Gulf Coast box turtle inside, and what do I feed him? Am I supposed to put him in water or can I leave him with all the grass, logs etc.,
Sahil Hossain Chris‘s video is only referring to our North American box turtles in the genus Terrapene, the Asian box turtles are a whole different animal, but amazing none the less!
Does any1 know a good captive breeding eastern box turtle seller? I'm looking to get my 5 year old turtle a companion to add some stimulation to her environment
My Female Desert Box Turtle Diego has orange eyes...They're gorgeous! I thought she was a male at first and I named her Diego and I don't want to changer her name now that I found out he's a she. There's no female version of the name Diego but I suppose Diego does come from the same base name as the French female name "Jacques." I like Diego better for her plus as an Autistic Person I don't like things changing too much.
Please leave these turtles in the wild. If you help them cross the road please let them go in the direction they were headed and not turned around. They need to stay in their habitat. They are beautiful turtles! Thanks :)
That’s correct. Captive bred animals must stay in responsible situations and serve their own purpose in preserving the species but wild turtles should always be left wild. 👍🏻
I rescued eastern box 🐢 in NJ for years. Most were injured and able to be rehabilitated back to health and able to be released. Two never were and have been with me for twenty years. They became to dependent before returning to mostly full health. All these turtles were displaced by man. Next time a housing development, shopping center, or even land is cleared for any project please make sure it is the last resort. These guys are all suffering from loss of habitat and populations are dwindling severely. I think we've done enough damage to the environment and nature.
I grew up in NJ and saw so much development and suburban sprawl built. I never got ticks bites when I was a kid. ONE TICK BITE MY WHOLE CHILDHOOD PLAYING OUTSIDE! I think this was because: 1. There were lots of animals that ate ticks, opossum and pheasants and other birds like bobwhites. 2. You were allowed to burn off your lawn which my grandmother did every fall for hygiene reasons. 3. People hunted deer and rabbits and pheasants...... Deer and rabbits are now over populated, covered in ticks and you shouldn't eat them like we used to do. Now you can't go into any tall grass or brush area in NJ without getting instantly covered in ticks of all types. BAD LAND MANAGEMENT.
This is a super large Fl Box he lives in my lot next to the house. I run to him and another one all the time. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yHpt6XYe20I.html
This message is brought to you by the Grant Florida Box Turtle Defense League. If you see a Box Turtle don’t pick it up and bring it home cause you think it would make a nice pet. They aren’t pets and are currently in real peril. Reproduction of Box Turtles is very iffy at best. When you take a Turtle out of the wild you are removing a breeding individual from possibly being able to add to the species. Box turtles don’t have huge ranges and may spend their whole lives within 2 square miles. When you move them it puts real stresses on them. Teach your kids not to pick them up. They will get warts (not really but if I thought that this wouldn’t keep them from picking them up because of this lie I will continue to perpetuate it).
@@GardenStateTortoise Not sure what happened. I shared a link to a video I did with Southern Illinois University where we radio-tracked box turtles; here is the link if you are interested in viewing it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PgfTy_Lz7hw.html
Less than 1 minutes into this video and it started showing adverts...... stopped watching and certainly didn’t click on the advert...... RU-vid killed another video with over advertising..... BS
