Over the last 50 years or so, and particularly in the 21st century, boxed wines and wines with screw caps are on the rise. What do you think of these two developments? Are you a fan? Here is my take as a sommelier.

I have had some red wines that were 90+ and not fit to drink, why is that high rated wines?

I can try to offer some potential insights: - taste is highly subjective (whether what's fit to drink or not) - drinking at sub-optimal temperature - did not have sufficient time to breathe & release their aromas (especially if wine is young) - or wine bottle is corked/contaminated

Hey Freddie, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you…… I just got back from France and am only now getting to my responses. As you see below, Leonard had some good insight in his response to you.. And one of the things that I noticed was that you indicated you have had some red wines that were 90+ points…… I hope I'm not reading too much into this but ..... when you said "wines" I took that as plural meaning this has happened on multiple occasions. Accordingly, I'm assuming that not all these wines could've had flaws in them or were "corked". So, there may be other reasons. In my 30+ years of drinking wine I may have had only three or four wines were flawed. Being Rated 90+ is not a final word. However, a season vet/sommelier has found that the wine is excellent and a good representation of the varietal and the region of the world it comes from. Without knowing your consumption habits and frequency, habits or expertise, or the wines you're talking about, I'm going to step not on a limb here. There are basically 3 areas to consider: 1. The wine, 2. Your palate and 3. the setting (including your mental and emotion receptivity at the time you're drinking the wine). 1. Leonard addressed this well. 2. was there a taste that was lingering in your mouth that caused an initial negative reaction that stayed with you. Pairing is a part of this area. Were you eating something that just didn't pair well with the wine and if you tried that wine with something different you may have a different response/reaction. (I have a several videos that address this. Actually, several of my videos have segments that address pairing. Check out my "Noble Grape" videos, especially the varietal that represents the wines you didn't like. They address the best things to pair with your wine.) 3. The setting, the people you're with, your frame of mind all have a bearing on how you taste a wine. One of my videos… "Vineyard bathing" someone addresses one of the possibilities that you're you've experienced. We're just touching the tip of the iceberg here but I trust my response makes some sense. Hopes this helps. Cheers!! Pierre
