Like how you’re using your footwork to slip instead of just upper body movement. Plus that shuffle is a good setup.
@expertboxing
@expertboxing 3 года назад
Yes, you gotta mix it in and it gets so much more creative and tricky for your opponent. They can’t tell when you’re slipping or moving.

Nice concepts, Johnny. This was a nice short and sweet presentation, too. Footwork is the foundation of everything, and thinking about a slip as an opportunity for movement because you're loading that foot is a great way to start thinking about it.

thanks for the content as always! After going through dance classes, stuff like this comes easily. been working drills and sparring with a friend a few times a week for the last 2 months straight and even though he's 241 lbs and 6'4 and I'm 148 and 6'1, I crush him easily every time. Don't worry, we go super light

expertboxing Can you do a video on how to take away the right hand from an opponent. Alot of street fighters and beginners swing haymakers with their dominant hand so I feel like knowing to take that away from them can be useful

Best way to take anything away is to counter it. So I welcome those big right hands ;)

I always seem to not slip in time. Is it a matter of being too close to my opponent or just my reflexes need work?

Same issue.. I feel like it is safer to catch, parry, or lean back . Slipping punches seems like high risk. The others in comparison seem low risk of getting hit..

Slipping is definitely more risky than most defense techniques, you need to KNOW that it’s a straight or uppercut punch coming(because if it’s a hook, you might run your head into it) & also you must know WHICH hand is coming, because if you Slip INSIDE a left straight, you could possibly get hit with a hard RIGHT! That’s the downfall! But on the Upside..... If you Slip perfectly, JUST ENOUGH TO MAKE HIM MISS, it’s almost guaranteed you will hit your opponent BEFORE he even adjust/balances himself into his normal position! Doesn’t really matter who’s faster, it mostly only matters who can TIME the other! So therefore you MUST learn to slip, even if it’s not your best defense. It will definitely help you land a good sneaky shot when needed! I would say practicing your slipping with a partner(someone who won’t try to knock you out, of course!) Start slow, Slip his crosses first!(I know that seems stupid BUT crosses are MUCH easier to see coming because they require SOME TYPE of load up, & they come from the REAR hand,(further away) whereas a JAB snaps out & back in, really quickly from the LEAD hand(closer) to score a quick point, NOT to do damage,) (Not saying jabs don’t hurt! If you get hit with enough “soft” jabs, they tend to really hurt! HELL some boxers have KO power in their jab, making it even more dangerous, Soooooo, why not learn to slip a cross first? Lol But yeah get a partner to throw SLOW & STEADY straights at your face, (assuming you already know the basic Technique behind slipping) Then keep trying! You will eventually get faster, & ask your partner to speed it up little by little, after a while you’ll be able to slip jabs in the ring by noticing certain patterns/indicators!

Any advice on how someone can train to be ambidextrous like Crawford, Hagler, Prince Naseem

Hello sir, I have a question for you. Can you give me a advice on how to train without going to boxing gym? I have a heavy bag, I have friends to spar with, I have mits and a double end bag. The reason for asking you is because there are no boxing gyms near me. I don't want to become a professional boxer. I just want to train boxing for fun and self defense.
@DonTHEhandsome1

Sounds like you got a gym already. Got the equipment, sparring partners and the want to train. What else do you need?

I mean...there's a lot of knowledge about what's correct and incorrect about boxing out there. I would say to make sure you don't go super hard in the sparring right away, and make sure you're always wearing a mouthguard if you do. Also, there are a lot of effective partner drills, and videos about them that are really worth your time, and will help you start to build up skills way more than just hitting the heavy bag, double end bag, and sparring will. You've got mitts, you should probably look up some intelligent ways to use them. At first, a lot of what you should be doing is watching other people, trying to get the form and technique down, and then watching other people again (you should watch your favorite RU-vidrs or pro boxers, and then try to analyze what makes them so good, and then video yourself, and try to critique your own technique.)

@@expertboxing like leaning back safely putting more distance between your opponents put so you have more time too block or defend punches
@Cassius-m5v
@Cassius-m5v 3 года назад
A good tip, from my experience would be try to keep yourself just at the tip of your OPPONENTS reach, So therefore if they try to surprise you with a punch, they will either LEAN FORWARD (giving you a good target!) OR STEP FORWARD(giving you a heads up, & giving YOU more power in your shot if you hit him coming in) If you keep the right distance, they will HAVE to do one of those things! But it also depends whether you’re better at fighting up close or far away. If you like fighting up close , THEN you could keep close contact to your opponent to “feel” the punches coming, because the closer you are, the harder it is to SEE a punch, but the easier it is to FEEL it!
