I suppose it's a matter of taste, but I would choose the shiny brass over the patina every time. Good job rebuilding that horn. Thanks for sharing it with us.

That was my first thought, but as he worked, I changed my mind. My preference is for it about 1/3 to 2/3 of what he did. It's his taste that counts, however.

Whoever owns this bugle must be thrilled that you were able to straighten that bell out so beautifully 👌

Awesome only begins to descibe the work you've done with this bugle. You have not only restored it to working order, you have preserved a piece of American history. Very well done sir!

I found this on a late night scroll athon and as a eagle scout myself I watched patiently just to hear this thing call revile and I wasnt disappointed that wasn't quite the call I remembered the camp using but it was good enough for me. Good times. 👍

That really came out well. I can understand the patina thing, but I think it looked really great polished.

Some patina yes but a bit too much patina for my liking.

You sir are a magician. I thought there's no way in heck you'd be able to fix the bell without destroying the engraving but you did.

Looks just like the bugle I blew in the Scouts in the '50s. The angle of the lead pipe is just as I remember it!. Great job!

I am amazed at the after results! Seeing you struggle with the bell was quite simply horrifying due to the amount of damage done to it, and the work needed to bring it back to the original curve. I have seen such damage over the years to other instruments, and all I can say is, you are a magician! Thank you for a great series!

I'm not surprised that you do such excellent work, but I am always amazed at how good they look when you're done. There are many different crafts or disciplines that you could be in that would benefit your experience and expertise but I know you're doing what you like. Thanks for the videos.

Great work! I know that patina is wanted but I have to say it looked so beautiful to me. It was like taking a suit to the dry cleaners and then putting it on and rubbing some dirt in spots so people didn’t think your suit was that clean 🧽 🧼 😮😂.

Why didn't you lacquer this? Did the customer not want that? I know from my own vintage bugle I'm not a huge fan of playing it because my hands smell bad after handling it, because of the raw brass. Otherwise I've been following this series from the start, and it's absolutely amazing how you made this look. I love watching you turn junk into like-new!

Great restoration. But in my humble opinion, patinas are for statues and memorials. Patina is just a pretty word for corosion and decay. I like bright shinney new better.

It looks just like the one that I got for Christmas around 1964. It is a Montgomery Wards bugle. Key of G if i recall correctly. Unfortunately i lost it from moving. They weren't plated. The mouthpiece area should be straight and not angled upward. And I think they were around ten dollars 🙂

Dear Wes, thanks again for sharing another great project. In the clip you show just adding flux and soldering on the brace, did you have to prepare the metal at all before soldering it ? Thanks again. Such a joy to watch.

Remove buffing dirt, then ready to solder. Otherwise, clean/degrease/fit part, then flux and solder

I own a BSA Rexcraft bugle in original condition. The solder joints are much longer than yours, but it's probably a quick n dirty factory assembly vs. your careful work. Is there a name/reason for the color ring on the bell (i have another Rexcraft and a US Regulation bugle with this marking)?
@jonpatton8594

Nice work, but I hope the owner has a lot of sentimental value in that bugle. The cost to repair bugles far exceeds their value.

How do these brass instruments get so damaged in the first place? The kinda dents these have would crush my string instruments, do these get thrown in the back of a pickup or something? 😅

Same goes for Cars or Motorcycles, NOT A FAN of Patina, whether original or manufactured Patina, Ugly and old and tarnished will NEVER look as good as repainted, plated and polished - I just dont understand it?
@tissuepaper9962
@tissuepaper9962 7 месяцев назад
If he sent it back polished you would find it *much* uglier after a year of being used by the Scouts. A consistent tarnish is significantly more attractive than the grubby, muddy, Cheeto-dust fingerprints of the 14-year-old boys this instrument is intended to be used by.

Shame to cover up all that hard work with some “patina”. I would prefer that thing to shine with a fresh coat of lacquer and fresh braids. Must be for a secret squirrel battalion of Boy Scouts.
