I remember going to my son's 8th grade graduation. His best friend had no one in the audience. When they called his best friend's name I cheered loud and proud for him. He is now a marine protecting our nation. This age group needs people to believe in them. They are on the precipice of making hard choices and staying strong or giving up. Bravo for this woman being in his corner.

That is so sweet. When I was in middle school my dad started using heroin and my parents separated. At my 8th grade graduation, the only person there to clap for me was my mom, and I remember seeing my classmates' moms and dads and large families there. I felt very embarrassed and ashamed that I didn't have that kind of family unit. When they called my name, all of my friends' families stood up and cheered for me as I walked across the stage and I immediately broke down in tears. I will never forget that moment and what it felt like to have so many people believe in me.

God Bless that kid and that lady for seeing the potential in him to afford him that opportunity. What a true Blessing!! He’s a determined kid who seems to have goals in mind. Please. In the richest country in the history of humanity, this shouldn't be happening. Americans always look on situations favorably because it shows "grit". Well, I guess in a sense, that's correct. Out of all industrialized nations, this is the "grittiest" for the common person, in this case, the common child.

I had a 17 year old have his mom call and cancel a contact lens appointment because he couldn't get a ride to our doctors office. He lived 7 minutes away....7 MINUTES AND HE COULDN'T WALK. So this child is going places ❤❤❤

He thought a full ride meant a ride to college..... between a car and a 4 year college education paid for, you got the better of the 2, but my guess is that transportation part will also come to you somehow. I am so impressed with his tenacity. I love seeing good things come to kids who truly need them and deserve them.

i had a car accident (small, no injuries) but my insurance company, Progressive, totaled my car.That was 3 months ago. I have not gotten another car yet. Instead i bought a new bicycle, I ride to and from work 5 days a week, to the grocery store, everywhere. People at work look down upon me, but IDGAF. PERSEVERANCE is what it's all about. So glad he got a full ride to college....the college president is right, its not all about your SAT scores or whatever, it's about your character. Half the battle is showing up. Well deserved Xavier!

You know he worked hard in school to want to get to his graduation... Kids who don't give 2 cents in school, wouldn't care about their diploma. The scholarship is such a great motivation for this young man to keep going... Don't stray, you got a great thing coming to you. I hope this university president will stay in his life and mentor him.

I live in Germany. The kids don't walk to school, they take public transport. They ride the U-Bahn or subway along with city buses.Their tickets are subsidised by us taxpayers.

The idea of a scholarship 4 years out is always crazy to me, you see it because of sports a lot. But in this case, I believe in the motivation of it. No judgment, but it's telling this young man realized his only way of getting there was walking. No adult he could call on to give him a short ride? Kind of heartbreaking. So I'm glad she came around and offered him this. Kind of a reason to keep grinding at such a young age, knowing he may not get it from anywhere else. Rise above, Xavier

Exactly. Why weren't any adults attending his graduation ceremony with him to celebrate and support him. Very sad. Even if a vehicle broke down the family could have taken public transportation TOGETHER. This is an example of why so many young people don't succeed.

@jada-roshaybethea5350 If I remember the story correctly when it was first posted last year at Xavier's graduation, he and his siblings are being raised by his grandfather (mom deceased etc). They're from a poor family. It was the grandfather's car (not a new fancy one) that wouldn't start when he was about to take Xavier to his graduation. Instead of missing his graduation, he decided to walk. From what I saw of the grandfather, I don't think he would have made the journey walking. I believe that after the story broke, Xavier was presented with a bicycle and his grandfather, a vehicle.. Go, check out the story. It will warm your heart 😊

His grandfather raised him. I was raised by my grandma and didnt go to my high school graduation as none of my aunts and uncles that always lived off her even had her buying them cars would attend or bring her. My bf at the time was jealous I was 17 and he was 23 and never finished high school until I began being the teachers assistant in his class. Some people really have noone at the time my mom was alive but didnt drive and didnt care.

I encountered that work ethic in a mother and daughter who delivered my groceries this morning. She helped her mother put the groceries on my front porch. The mother said her daughter preferred to be out with her.

He got what he needed, and not what he wanted. He wouldn’t have any use for a car at 8th grade bc of his age, but he needed to know his future educational journey is waiting on him. Thanks Young Man. My car broke down yesterday on my way to work and I got a ride in. Was going to take the day off today, but have decided I am going to walk the 6 miles so I can Show Up! I won't get anything special, not even appreciation. But I will be getting the holiday pay for next week because of it.

From 1st to 4th grade I walked 1.5 miles to my village school, but for middle and highschool I had to walk 6-7 miles to reach the bus and then have a 40 minute ride to the city, and just now when I got my highschool diploma I also got my drivers license ... damn
