What I take from this scene is to remember that children remember EVERYTHING. Maybe the father really did say it, but he said it in passing without thinking about it. So the difference was in the perception of what was said.

I can really relate to this scene. He knows his father as the "fun dad" who doesn't have any parental responsibility and has the time/energy to indulge in silly things. Now he finds that his father has grown up, and isn't as much fun anymore. I can't blame Mason for not liking the change, because his father isn't there for him anyway.

Don't underestimate a kid's memory. Parents can say things to young kids to make them happy. Trust me - the kid remembers.

This is a great scene, I think Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) does remember saying that he'd give the GTO to Mason Jr., but he just doesn't want to admit that he changed his mind.

Actually, a small movie called "Girlhood" came out recently. Completely different film, compared to Boyhood.

Fine. Explain to me then! :) the only good part was when the mum was all like, fine go on to college and live your life and leave me behind. But hardly enough to justify the ratings

Tessa from retail Richard Linklater's movies rarely have a clear storyline, like "regular" films. Linklater's big talent is, that the viewer creates a very strong connection with the characters, and therefore indentifies him/herself with the movie a lot. And in Boyhood, he brought that talent to perfection. A real feel good movie
