Hi Steve I suffered a brachial plexus injury while on holiday in Thailand in July this year and have since been treated by the RNOH in London. Your video has really cheered me up and encouraged me as to what you can do after an injury like this. I am able to still move my fingers and my thumb but I'm still learning how to use them properly and grip objects as I cannot feel my thumb at all and have to constantly look at it in order to make it do what I want it to. Other than that I cannot move my arm at all but can kind of shrug my shoulders and flex my tricep. The doctor's said my injury was very strange in that respect and they want to study my surgery and recovery process. I had surgery in October where they remove scar tissue from around my nerve stems but since then not much progress has been made and I will be going for my second surgery which will be an oberlin transfer procedure, from what I understand about the procedure it could be the first of many. My question for you is were you treated at the same hospital? Also in terms of occupational therapy and physiotherapy what were you able to do pre-op? My last question is regarding pain management, how bad is the pain going to be during recovery stage post-op? That's the last question I'm going to ask you and I apologise for bombarding you with so many but watching your video has really inspired me and you seem like you are in a place where I'd like to be as soon as possible so I guess I see you as a type of role model for me. Congratulations again on all the progress that you've made and I really hope I can do the same. Good luck when everything

Hey Steve, you’re a great inspiration to me. I have had a major car accident about 4 months ago. I suffered from a similar brachial plexus injury. I have had a nerve grafting surgery about a month ago, still no progress but I’m positive and working for it. But sometimes it gets emotional & negative i think you know what i mean. It would be great if we can talk/connect. I would appreciate someone to talk who knows what I’m going through. Lots of love & respect to you & all of you who are suffering from this. ❤

Great video Steve, very inspirational stuff! I developed Parsonage Turner Syndrome three years ago which has left me with permanent paralysis of my left infraspinatus and supraspinatus. Although I'm still able to deadlift, having worked my way back up from 60kg to a single rep with 170kg, I have a horrible nagging feeling all the time that my risk of a dislocated shoulder is significantly increased given that these two rotator cuff muscles aren't functioning. Is this something that concerns you at all? I'm struggling to find any other real sources of information on this so would be great to get your thoughts!

Steve your injury wasn't complete right? your t1 preserved right? because if it was preserved, there is a surgery that makes you raise your wrist and open your fingers, I don't know if you know that

Hey Steve, thank you very much for your video... You are an inspiration for me. I would like to know if you have neuropathic pain, and how you deal with it... I had an injury in C6 since October and began the gym this month. Best Regards from Brazil 🇧🇷 - Rio de Janeiro.

Hi Victor, Thank you for the very kind message and I am glad it has helped you with your injury :) With the neuropathic sensations I now experience in my arm I no longer take medication for (6 years down the line at the time of writing this). I began to cut down on the medication and phase them out about 6 months to a year after my operation. The process to do this was tough, and at times uncomfortable, but very much worth it. In answer to your question, I used/still use hot and cold treatment such as hot saunas and cold showers. I also used/use different materials and textures to help retrain and re learn the new levels of sensation I now have in my arm. My arm at times still plays up and feels tight, but keeping it as mobile as possible and keeping the muscles, tissues, tendons, ligaments and skin as healthy as possible really helps. Best wishes, Steve

@@BagasDanur Thanks for the response, I am totally on board with you wanting to do therapy and get fitter. I also understand there are logistical and money issues around surgery and this type of injury. What do you enjoy doing when it comes to fitness and exercise? What motivates you best? It can be as simple a walk in the park or as full on as a around the world swim? Please let me know and I would love to help you with that? I enjoy physical performance. It motivates me and gets me up in the morning. I love pushing myself and seeing what I can do. With these videos I wanted to demonstrate an approach as simple as that. Yes it is definitely possible to deadlift with your injury there is no doubt about that. But what I would recommend is to aim at a target you know you will enjoy and adapt along the way. I will of course give you any information on equipment I have used or pointers on what I have found useful if this is what you need? Great talking with you. Kind regards, Steve

@@BagasDanur Thanks for the message, Sure if you would like to start going to the gym I am more than happy to suggest some decent starting points for yourself. Would it be possible for you to send me a video of yourself and your arm? steve@mettleplexus.com What I was really getting at in the last message is that it important to do what you enjoy. I am not a doctor or a surgeon and I do not know the extent of your injury. It would not be correct for me to diagnose possible outcomes over the internet like this. If you have goals that you want to achieve or passions that you want to pursue then I would love to help you adapt to your circumstances 👍 Kind regards, Steve

I'm feeling like there is hope. I too suffer from brachial plexus injury. There's no neurosurgeon in my country with the expertise to help me in my journey. A plastic surgeon from the USA performed the Oberlin nerve transfer 1 in January this year. I feel lost coz he returned to the USA and I feel wasted. I wanna swim. I think of it day and night. Physio here is just as incompetent as the word gets. I need specialized help ... Where do I begin? I'm told that I am far too out of the window period to advance my chances of full recovery. I'm told that I need to prepare for a muscle transfer and joint fusion in my injured shoulder. I need hope... Something to just hold on to as I work my way out to something better. Is there a volunteer program out there that can give me this opportunity?

how is your recovery? I hope it all worked out for you! I also suffer from this injury and will need to have a second surgery to transfer the suprascapular nerve to the shoulder... in the first one I had oberlin 2 and still waiting for the biceps to react. hugs from Brazil

Hey Steve, You really inspire me . Everytime before I go for electro stimulation (physiotherapy) I watch your video . I just had a quick query. Steve Bloyce Okay, let me explain it so we have a clear picture of what information I want to seek from you . 5 months ago I met with an motor vehicle accident, head on collision with a truck. It left me unconscious for a day and later I was been diagnosed with having an ankle fracture (left ) and right brachial plexus injury . Which severely injured my deltoid nerve and biceps nerve . The NCS/EP/ENMG summary says,” right musculocutaneous , axillary motor study shows absence response. Left musculocutaneous, axillary motor shows normal. Right radial Motor study shows decreased CMAP amp when compared to the left side. Musculocutaneous sensory study shows normal . Median, ulnar motor and sensory study was normal.” And the NCS/EP/ENMG conclusion says, “ Severe right musculocutaneous and axillary motor axonal neuropathy , Right radial Motor axonal neuropathy.” Now as much as it is , I am attending physiotherapy sessions everyday where I am really seeing significant changes but at the deltoid region , the physiotherapist says the deltoid muscle is not strong which is causing the gap . All my bones are intact and I have no bone problem. My question here is ,A, do we share the same injuries and ,B, do you have a gap due to weak deltoid muscle .
