Im almost three years into this injury and this is the first time I searched to see what other people’s recovery looks like. I haven’t searched what recovery looks like for others sooner because I didn’t want to accept the severity of my injury. Mine was due to a motor cycle incident like most of us it seems. I’ve had many serious injuries in my life but nothing like this. This is life changing as we know. The truth is it dose get better but it takes years. For those coming to this video who recently suffered this injury this is a tough pill to swallow, it was for me anyway. You will surprise yourself with how well you’ll adapt. It will never be normal but you’ll find your new normal. I’m to the point now where I think it’s hard for people to notice when I’m just walking around but it requires constant focus. Try to keep a good mindset, eat well, stay active and constantly use what movement you have. Even three years in I feel like I’m still improving. ❤️

I had a motorcycle accident September 2021 Had locked posterior shoulder dislocation an blew out 25 % of socket , brachial plexus damage and fracture humerus .needed surgery an bone graft but was to sore stresed and scared of the operation constant pain and burning and around 50% rang of motion In my arm not quite as bad as guy in the video but not alot better either been so difficult to live with has had devastating impact on mental health but couldn't have been worse .! I was overcome with emotion reading these comments as I can relate with anyone living with this injury and made me feel not alone as much .

So happy to see your recovery over time; my daughter just had a car accident and is pretty discouraged with what this injury seems to imply. I had never heard of it ever before, but we are learning as we go. She has hand motion, although they said her nerves were severed at places... she just started PT today. Thanks for helping to inspire us!

Thank you for the kind message and I am sorry to hear about your daughter's accident. I wish her all the best in her recovery - great to hear she is starting her PT as exercise and movement really helped me early on and still to this day. There are some amazing people in this space and if you have found this video I am sure you will have many positive interactions to help along the way. I check this site periodically but if I can help more and provide info in any other way I will pass all my knowledge as best I can. Steve :)

Thank you so much for those kind words. 👏👍💪 I really appreciate it :) I was looking for similar information to help me at the start and I thought it was important to share my experience to help others in that way when I had the ability to. Of course I will add more content in further videos. I have a video I am currently working on specifically regarding the arm and the exercises I used. I have been getting a lot of messages around the types of sensation experienced and the levels of comfort with the injury and I will definitely address this further. You can contact me directly via email and I have further content on instagram that may be of interest? @mettleplexus Please let me know if you want specific information and I will be more than happy to help you? @@stevebloyce8790 Thank you for getting back to me. I was wondering were you are with your injury today? Also if you ever considered amputation of the hand and just going with a prosthetic hand? I'm at 3 year's and I have gained a lot but the pain of this injury gets to you. I have worked with a company called myomo with a mechanical brace. It took me 6 months to work this with my physical therapist. It's not a easy brace its heavy and hard to use for like all day I'm pushing to use it atleast 2 hours a day. I still can't use my fingers or flip my hand over. I just was thinking about all options and decided that I would give myself 5 more years to work and get back what I can with my doctor but I feel like I hit all I'm going to regain. It's just all disheartening sometimes.

@@csabrina7able Thanks for the message back and the open nature of your response. In answer to your question regarding function of my arm to date - my injury was back in Aug 2015 and I am now 5.5 years down the line since surgery. The movement ranges you saw at the end of the video are where they remained and my strength and control within those ranges has still improved. My wrist extensors still do not work and my deltoid is not functional on the injured side. The rotator cuff muscles power shoulder movement and I have the medial head of the tricep to extend my arm. My arm is functional and I am back at work as a Rehab Fitness Instructor within the NHS. With regards to pain and sensation I no longer take medication for it and manage the different feelings I get within my arm by being alert to what aggravates and soothes. Cold weather and rough surfaces seem to annoy my arm so I use them to help acclimate my arms sensations. I am more than happy to jump on a video call with you and chat if you would like further explanation/demonstration of arm movement as I am fully aware than written text is far less explanatory than a demonstration. I hope this helps? Best wishes and happy new year! Steve

@@stevebloyce8790 thanks for the reply Steve! Yes I very much share the same view and sentiment towards life but I'm also a medical student and think about the responsibilities I will have in the future for my patients and it makes me feel selfish for wanting to make choices for my self. But there's a fine line between self-sacrifice for the benefit of others vs. Enjoyment of your own life. I love the outdoors and take part in high risk activities like hiking in mountains and snowboarding for example. I could have been hurt countless of times but haven't thus far. But I always put myself in a mindset of "what if I was the neurosurgeon that was gonna do your surgery, but hurt myself doing something and could no longer help you recover" - those types of thought patterns. But yes. You could wake up tomorrow and find out you have terminal stage IV metastatic cancer. That's life, you never know. So I constantly end up in this loop of thinking what I want to do in this short life that we have been granted to live and enjoy vs. The potential risk of those choices. Will it be worth it either way? Anyways, Cheers mate, and thanks for considering my statement a valuable addition to this thread. \m/_O_\m/

The surgery technic applied in my case was C7 Contralateral Nerve Transfer. Considering my age as a factor the surgeon did not work for my hand functions (wrist & fingers). I'm gaining at shoulder & elbow only, that too at a very slow pace (may be age factor), have no sensor or motor function below my elbow till date. I get this presistant crushing pain 24/7 from my elbow all the way to my fingers which they call Phantom pain (Brachial Neuralgia). I'm free from any medication. So I wanted to know how have you handled you're Brachial Neuralgia pain? Good luck... Alex India

@@Alex-mr3ns Really good to hear from you and I completely appreciate where you are coming from. It can be incredibly uncomfortable. The nerve sensations that accompany this type of injury can be very overwhelming at times. I am really encouraged to hear that you are free from medication and are looking for solutions to manage the discomfort in this manner. Strategies I have used to help manage the sensations are as follows; For me cold temperatures increased the sensitivity of the nerves in my arm and therefore made the sensations worse. I therefore make sure on colder days I have gloves and extra sleeves available. You can buy extra sports sleeves, the ones used by runners, from sports goods shops to help. These sleeves and gloves also provided extra protection and helped cushion any impact that might have occurred, like knocking into door frames. With the cold I also reverse engineered the problem and took the opportunity to expose myself to cold and hot showers to try and get used to these new sensations I experience in a controlled manner. This now helps if my arm gets colder my body is more used to that experience already. I have also found that increasing the circulation helps drastically. By this I mean keep your arm moving as much as possible. In the early days when I had little to no movement I used gentle massage, Jacuzzis and water jets to help. I also bought an electronic massage device to help manipulate the arm. I still use these today as my arm still gets stiff and the looser I keep it the better it feels. Any type of movement or passive stretch you can do will help improve the neuralgia to a certain extent. As you quite rightly say Alex it is a slow process and my arm is still improving now. The longer time that passes for myself the more I get used to the all aspects of this type of injury and the more capable I feel about dealing with it. Start with trying a few of these things and let me know how you get on? I am more than happy to help you adapt and get the best outcome possible for yourself. Kind regards, Steve

Steve, Inspiring story, the best of luck in further recovery! I had an axonotmesis on the c5/c6 nerves. (so they are partially intact). I am now a year after the happening (a medical mistake putting to much tension on the nerves, bad bad luck. I didn't have any nerve grafts as the nerves where still partially intact. After 12 months i don't feel much recovery anymore. For how long can you expect recovery. After 18-24 months motor endplates die (and there will be no more new nerve connections being made). Can i still expect a bit of improvement after 18 months, maybe the nerves that alreadey connected innervating in a better way? I so much hope for more improvement (doing my excercises every other day and using a massage ball very often), but i dont't notice it anymore compared to 2 months ago. I always have musscle knot and very tight musscles, as all my rotator cuff musscles have difficulty raising my arm. Any tips for me? (for how long can i expect some improvement?)

I crashed my motorcycle from my own foolish act back in July. Avulsed C5, C6 and partial C7 but with continuity to C7. Underwent a triple nerve transfer. FCU ulnar fascicle to biceps branch, medial head triceps branch to full axillary, and distal accessory to suprascapular micro fascicular transfer. I'm really struggling with the mental aspect of my injury, as the accident was essentially my fault. Only me involved. I'm in my early 20s, and like someone else I saw comment, I feel like my life is 'over' before it even began. Especially after being told sensation would not return, and that some muscles will remain denervated, it is an extremely tough pill to swallow. Hardest part was I was told in the hospital that it would all heal naturally and no surgery was needed, come my EMG test a couple months later, I was told I had avulsions and my arm would never be the same as it was. Quite the roller coaster... relief, to grief... I keep reminding myself it could have been a lot worse, but as I'm sure many of you resonate with, even that doesn't really help. My hopes is that technology and medicine will innovate and come up with some sort of treatment (even for those injured a long period prior) to heal and 'reconnect' the nerve roots and restore the original nerves. But as we know the atrophy is another problem, and so I suppose two problems would need to be solved to combat this. Reversing denervation atrophy and reconnecting nerve roots to the spine safely and effectively. I've been going to physio every week for two sessions, and trying to stay on my home exercises consistently. If anyone has any advice, motivation, or even other treatments or information I would love for you to share it, as I think talking about it helps a lot. Hopefully in these next few months, and years I can get back good function.

@stevebloyce8790
@stevebloyce8790 Год назад
Hi Leo, Thank you for your kind words and I really appreciate your compliments on the video. Triceps muscle has 3 heads (long, lateral, medial) and is innervated by 3 nerve roots - C6, C7 & C8. My C8 nerve root was unaffected by the injury and I have function in my medial head of my triceps to extend my arm. If I am completely honest, I can't remember back to the start of the injury other than my whole arm not functioning until after the surgery. I could not tell you how much innervation was there previous to the surgical intervention and what medial head triceps recovery there would have been without. That is definitely a question for my surgeon regarding how much movement in the triceps would have returned without the surgical intervention? It is worth noting that nerve messages require an outgoing component to the message and an incoming part also. This is another factor when it comes to surgeries with Brachial Plexus injuries that I am not qualified enough to talk about. Have you had experience with a Brachial Plexus injury? Best wishes, Steve

@@stevebloyce8790 Steve, Thank you so much for answering me. I confess your video that it motivated me a lot in my recovery. Thanks for sharing your story! Yes my friend, I had a motorcycle accident in November/21. My injury was similar to yours (C5/C6/C7) but in the infraclavicular region, which hurt me at the level of the cords, breaking the musculocutaneous, axillary and part of the radial nerves (triceps). I also injured the suprascapular nerve due to a fracture of the scapula. Today I have 10 months of injury and 5,2 months of the first surgery (Oberlin II, axillary and triceps grafts) and 2 months of the second surgery (spinal accessory to infraspinatus/Thoracodorsal nerve to long head triceps and axillary anterior portion). In this second surgery, the goal was to give me a better chance and not change the first procedure, as nerve grafts do not have as reliable results as nerve transfers. At the moment I can flex my elbow, but I'm not sure if it's because of my reinnervated biceps, as my brachioradialis was already showing signs of recovery before the first surgery. Did you feel the biceps contraction before flexing the elbow or did the movement happen before that perception? How is your hand today? Did you have any additional surgeries? I hope your recovery is better than ever before. Hugs from Brazil!

Hi Shubham Nannaware, Thanks for your message, I really appreciate the contact. It is great to hear that you have a good understanding of the injury and are in the process of making informed decisions regarding which options to take. I am not a doctor or surgeon so it would be highly inappropriate for me to recommend treatment/operations over a platform such as this with the information you have provided, albeit very well formed. There are many factors involved with brachial plexus injuries that make EVERY injury unique to the individual and health care provider administering it. In light of this you are definitely the best person to make these decisions about the surgeries and their application for yourself. With my injury in the health care system I was treated under (NHS) the surgery options, risks and benefits were laid out on the table specific to the professionals administering it and relevant to my situation. This was all done upfront in a very professional manner with all the information they had. The operations were done with my full knowledge and consent. Knowing very little about your situation I can offer the following advice: Ask all of your questions to all of your health care professionals and get as much information about the surgeries/tests conducted and options as possible as these should be specific to your situation. With this in mind when I made my decisions, and continue to make them, I was happy that moving forward my surgeries (outlined in the video) were the best options at the time for me. This may seem like simple advice now and 3 and a half years down the line I am happy that I took this approach. I get contacted by many people saying they didn't have enough information specific to them upfront to help make the best decision. Hence these videos to provide a little more light on a very specific injury. With an injury like this in my experience the more informed your decision is now the more successful your recovery will be and the more you will get from your situation later down the line. I would love to hear more about you and if you need any suggestions for rehabilitation and adaptation ideas then I am definitely more than happy to help that too. I have more information on my Instagram account if this also helps? @mettleplexus Kind regards, Steve

it was in the year 2013 that i underwent a neuro reconstruction in Paras Hospital, Gurgaon by Prof.(Dr.) V. S. Hey Steve I have suffered similar accident n undergo operation 3 months ago. I have a question, according to the your video. The operation will give you elbow flexion only. You were able to extend as well. Was this a miracle? Best regards Quy
@stevebloyce8790
@stevebloyce8790 5 лет назад
Hi Quy Diep, Great question and thanks for asking. Yes the operations carried out were done to restore the ability to bend the elbow and use my shoulder again. The triceps that extends the arm in this manner has three heads and one of the 3 heads, the medial head, gets its nerve activation along one of these restored nerve pathways. Depending on the operation and the recovery will influence the ability to extend the arm. How is your arm and what injury and surgeries have you undergone? Great question, thank you. Kind regards, Steve

@stevebloyce8790 5 лет назад
Hi@@PigZero4 Apologies about the length of time to reply, I have only just seen the notification. I see from your surgeries that they are looking towards reinnervation of damaged muscles. This is great and important that you give these surgeries the best chance to take affect. If you smoke it is vital that you quit immediately as this is proven to reduce the healing capabilities of nerves. This will improve the success of the operations. Get a lot of good quality sleep in these early stages as this will improve the repair process also. As for exercise, I strongly recommend the swimming pool at this early stage. It supports the arm and will allow you to control better any initial muscle activation that you do get. Keep your arm as mobile as possible to encourage blood flow, similarly keep it warm. You refer to pain in your message and this can be very uncomfortable in the early stages. This will dissipate over time so take care to respect your arm as it heals. Don't be afraid to experience slightly uncomfortable feelings as this will help with the proprioceptive connection to the brain. Please feel free to contact me directly on steve@mettleplexus.com as I am more than happy to help more specifically with your rehab when I have a little more information. Great questions and thank you so much for your information as this is really helpful for others experiencing similar. Kind regards, Steve

Hi Nick, Yes, the sensations at the start were most intense. Depending on the nerves you damage will depend on where you feel those sensations.
