Sure. Just think how many lived before this has been composed... :) I have this habit, to wonder if Eminescu (best Romanian poet) could know/see/hear something (music or object, whatever). If yes, that is old. If not, it is too new...

You must realise that there are musical gems you will never find, no matter how hard you look for.

It is sooo beautful. Have you seen the 1946 movie Undercurrent ? They use the 3rd movement as the " theme music " throughout.

Dvořak loved Brahms 3d symphony and said it's better than the first two.... Dvořák to Simrock, October 1883: “I was in Vienna these days, where I spent beautiful days with Dr. Brahms, who has just arrived with Wiesbaden. I have never found him in such a cheerful mood. We were together every day at noon and in the evening, and we talked about a lot of things. (...) He immediately granted my wish to hear something from his new Symphony and played me its first and last movement. I say and do not exaggerate that this work of his first symphonies prevails, although perhaps not in size and powerful concept - certainly in beauty! (...) “Two months later, Dvořák is present at the Viennese premiere of this Brahms Third, and he immediately travels to Berlin for his work. Dvořák to Simrock, January 1, 1884: “I hear here in Prague that the Brahms Symphony, which I am looking forward to as a child, will be played in January. If you write me when it will be, I will come immediately ... ”The Berlin performance took place at the end of January and soon after Dvořák began writing his Seventh Symphony in D minor: he began to write it with a determination to give the world something very special that would surpass its current symphonic creation and what would match Brahms in his eyes.

@@jospenner9503 It's easy to suspect that indeed they were. Johannes was in love with both Robert his mentor and beloved teacher in many respects...and Clara whom he admired and loved in private. But the passing of Robert in 1856...left little room for an eternal platonic love between the two survivors. It is more than certain that Johannes and Clara, after a very respectful period of grief, allowed themselves to find each other's arms. BUT and this is a very strong BUT Clara was constantly touring even as her husband was locked up in the Institution were he willingly commited himself. And she tourred all thru the 60s, 70s and 80s. So if there was a Passion between the two...it was certainly anything but domestic and tranquil...as Johannes' reputation was also travelling across Europe...and so was constantly growing. Therefore...i think we are looking at romantic platonic musical love...that for all i know...she might have also shared with Joseph Joachim. Joseph Joachim was the genius behind Brahms splendid Instrumental Colours. He was akin to Maurice Ravel...a genius with a Palette for Orchestration. Maybe we have ourselves...a part-time Lover's Triangle of touring Stars in the 19th C. Who knows ? I doubt that even after reading the hundreds of letters ALL of them educated Socialites wrote to one another...we would find any indiscrete allusions to this. So, let's leave it to respectful imagination. They were just like us, hungry...but nobody could travel faster than Horse Carriage power. So the Fast Life was very much slower back then. Cheers.

Check out his circle; there's a lot of composers that took inspiration from the same source (wouldn't call them "Brahmsians" necessarily, as that suggests they copied Brahms, which would be unfair). I'm talking of Fuchs, Dietrich, Herzogenberg, Draeseke (to some extent), and perhaps most of all Gernsheim.

A wretched performance by a usually reliable Maestro. (Never liked Solti"s rendering either). Choppy in places, and often too fast, with frustrating elisions.

The third movement is one of my favorites. That horn part gives me the chills every time.

Amen - beautifully done! The whole buildup to that climax is hands down my favorite passage of music in any genre by any composer. Brahms has been under my skin since I was 3 years old, 66 years ago.

This is my favorite work of art by any artist, in any medium. I fell in love with it when I was 3 years old, in 1959.

His walks in nature. Swiss mountains. He said he was inspired by nature and his walks. I think that is also how he communed with God.

Third movement was used as a main theme in an old movie, GOODBYE AGAIN.

The thing about Brahms is, no music rewards repeated listening more than his. There are so many beautiful details woven into his structures that always relate to each other, and he conceals them so subtly that you don't notice the first time you hear them.

@@max_kl Oh I couldn't say. It is very difficult to give any numerical estimate without having any data. But from my own experiences in Germany and in other parts of the world, I do not think it is unreasonable to say that today's youth does not really have the disposition nor the temperament to enjoy classical music. Contemporary popular music, which young men and women really seem to enjoy, strikes me as quite barbarous and crude. This, I believe, is especially true of contemporary rap music, which is loaded with expletives of every kind, and has next to no melody. I had higher hopes from Germany because of its very rich musical tradition, but, alas, I found that globalization is all too real, and I was not able to discern any real difference between the youth of America and the youth of Europe.

Its their national pride For example The german national anthem is a classical piece written by haydn The german EU anthem is Beethoven's 9th. And Also theirs a Beethoven statue in bonn

Same thing happened to me fifty years ago! My father who loved Brahms told me to start listening to number three. I was knocked out, learned to appreciate the other symphonies also but my heart belongs to the third❤️‍🩹

I agree. But after focusing nicely on the woodwind at the start of the movement, the director misses the oboe solo and switches to the conductor. Such a pity to deprive the oboist of his moment of glory.

The sound quality is great as you say. If you go to any of the Warsaw Philharmonic’s broadcasts (an equally fine orchestra) you will hear probably the best engineered sound available on Y.T.
