In C minor, of course. Sometimes these days called the "Werther" quartet because Brahms wrote to his publisher that it should be accompanied by a picture of a figure like Goethe's hero, with a gun pointed at his head. Werther committed suicide over his unrequited love for his friend's wife. (Read Jan Swafford's excellent biography.) The opening allegro's stormy first theme gives way to a lovely second theme (2:07), surely inspired by Clara Schumann, which is immediately followed by four variations. The recapitulation of this is slightly different: the first variation (7:14) might serve as the defining example of the principle that "less is more"; music from another realm. The entire quartet demonstrates the validity of Bulow's "3 B's" judgement.

The first movement was so intense, definitely conveyed Werther's suicidal commitment.
