Hi, I think that was very well done, and heating the ring and parsing the pipe through will help make it round, but with it being so thing it might not be necessary to heat it. I like the idea and this would make a nice handle for a carry-all tool box which you might use every day.

Thanks for a wonderful demonstration! You know, what would be kewl...if you welded the 4 pieces of round-bar together, from the finish of the braid, all the way out to the tips of the bars and then forged it into a knife blade. It would be the perfect knife! It's almost the right shape, now...with the bar ends staggered like they are. Thanks again.

you can do this with one of the cheap oxy/propane or oxy/mapp torches you find at big box stores. Not as fast as oxy/acetylene, but it works. I only run oxy/propane, as I'm too cheap/poor to buy acetylene, but it still works well enough to cut 1"+ thick plate. But my little cheap torch does well on small stuff like this and has a nice small flame that directs heat well.

@henryhamilton9574
@henryhamilton9574 8 лет назад
I've tried it with copper and steel.....a bit trickier cause the copper is such a small heat sink compared to the steel. Looks nifty. I think the pattern welded outcome would look good but the braid would flop at some point unless the hammer was very keen......maybe incorporate a slight twist over the whole length to tighten it up a bit (works for cable much better that way too).

Gary, I like your videos which are very interesting and informative. I do a bit of hobby blacksmithing and know of (and have used) a method for "braiding" 1/4 rod with 6 lengths (instead of 4) that looks very realistic and is more smooth & comfortable in your hand. Once made it looks very complicated but is quite easy to make. To make a braided handle about 6 inches long cut 3 pieces of 1/4 rod 18 inches long. Heat each piece in the middle and bend it tightly back along itself. Weld the end of each piece together (to prevent spreading). Do the following steps to each of the 3 pieces. Heat the entire length in the forge, clamp one end in a vice, and using a turning wrench, twist clockwise until the entire length is tightly twisted. This may take multiple heats but the aim is to have consistency along the entire length. Twist all 3 pieces so they look alike with the same number of twists. Bundle the 3 pieces together and weld the ends so you have one unit. Heat the unit red hot and twist counter-clockwise until the loops line up. You'll know when its right when you see it. One end can then be welded to a short piece of rod for a hook (for hanging) and the other end welded to whatever needs a handle (fireplace poker, coal rake, pot handle, etc). Work the welds until there is a smooth transition from the braid on both ends. Maybe you could try it and make a video. If you like the results post it for us. Thanks, HWP.

My father twisted stainless wire and braided a different size wire, bent the braided wire in to a horse shoe shape wrap the twisted wire around the braided on the inside of the horse shoe and on the out side of it , to make a belt buckle, he made solid tips for each end, he flattened the braided wire just enough to accommodate the thickness of the twisted wire, have to say it made a very nice looking buckle once it was polished.

the 4 peaces sticking up , just forge weld them together and make them into a knife , and boom , a knife with an interesting handle , i mean its not gonna be any good because the metal is not ideal and the braid is a bit slim for it to be a comfortable grip , but as a proof of concept

I tried twisting the single braided bar and it turned out not as expected but still like something someone might like and not like something I'd seen before. It needed to be straightened and evened up after twisting. But it looks like parallel twisted rods that are partially linked together. I've done a few other experiments in the last few days and it's been fun, but there is a bit of a learning curve.
