I would have at liest wire brushed the rust from the external sealing surface to prevent contamination of the piston.

And that will be seized in week. The seal surface is rusty as hell

I did this for years, but cheaper and more reliable to purchase rebuilt calipers these days.

In the late 80’s and 90’s when Chrysler came out with the plastic pistons I rebuilt 1000’s of calipers with steel pistons

Servicing my own cars, I've replaces a few brake piston seals and boots, and they have lasted over 10 years and I don't even change the brake fluid every year, maybe every 2-3 years. But always use brake compatible grease to lube seal & boot rubber.

Um... This is why I do my own brakes

We used to do this by cleaning the caliper fully then reassemble the caliper piston seal and boot. Then lube the piston and both seal and boot with brake fluid. Feed in just a little compressed air in the line connection. The boot pops up around the piston and then you cut the air and push the piston the rest of the way down. Takes a little practice, but once you've mastered the technique is faster. The technique is listed in early Chrysler service manuals

Remove the rust ring above the seals. Thats what caused it to fail in the first place.

I think you need a bead blaster to clean that caliper and get rid of the corrosion That's the quickest way to reconditioned this part for sure, but it looks like you got some good skills there keep up the good work😊

Grey soft cloth, followed by emery cloth. And a 2 wide soft copper wheel to clean up the rust around the rim. No bueno 😅

USA labor costs make this effort too costly vs Reman. Also shifts assembly Liability

Those are the easiest ones to rebuild do a old GM dual piston corvette that you have to use air to take them out and put them in he did that procedure on point

Así no es werito.. Metes primero la goma en el pistón la bajas y la metes en su ranura y después empujas el pistón y listo.. Con el filo de el desarmador picas la goma.. Mucho ojo.. Pregúntame..!

Calipers,rotors and the few wheel cylinders that are out are just cheaper time wise and more reliable than rebuilding unless they’re on high performance or race cars.

Order of Install 1. o ring 2. Piston 3. Boot 4. Ring seal

They make a hone to hone the cylinder before putting a new piston in. Honking would make for a better seal. 1970s you bought rebuilt kits didn't buy calipers like today.

Biggest problem is getting the bleed screw out.

ja.. das kenn ich.. bremsen waren bei mir runter, in der Werkstatt neue Scheiben und Beläge, 3 Monate später Sattel fest, von Werkstatt gangbar gemacht, wieder neue bremsen und Beläge.. jetzt 2 Jahre später wieder Sattel fest.. nur hab ich diesmal direkt Sattel, halter, Beläge, scheibe ankerblech, und Bremsleitungen neu gemacht.. in der Werkstatt hätte ich dafür 1500 bezahlt, so nur 1/4 und ich weiß das es diesmal hält. Auto war in 4 Jahren 6 Mal in der Werkstatt wegen bremsen weil die irgendwie kein Bock mehr oder keine Zeit mehr haben das richtig zu machen

Hack! Use break clean, 360 grit sandpaper then clean it up with a wire wheel at least.

I learned my lesson the hard way, if your caliper is hard to unbolt get rid of the damn thing, I snapped two nuts off trying to remove it to put a new one so it was one with the truck until I could get a tapper, I felt super defeated putting everything back on😂💀

I think he put piston 180 degrees wrong. The hole should be inside side calipen not outside.

Watching the dude attempt to scrape that rust off that machined surface kinda pisses me off. To think when the customer comes to pick up his vehicle and asks how everything went, they will reply with something short, false, and expected, like, "all set, no problems at all." Followed by: "Here is your invoice and your keys are at the register on the left. Just hand them your invoice and they will take care of you....."

Waste of time and energy. Buy a new caliper. Similar to rebuilding ac compressors, axles, alternators or any other part. Extremely expemsive parts can be rebuilt. But, why would anybody buy a vehicle with extremely expensive replacement parts?

Rust needs balsting clean or use a small wire wheel on a high speed multi tool, then use red rubber grease under seal and on exposed metal within the unit to slow rust returning. New seals not normally required unless damaged. The repair shown is useless as rust will return within 12 months

You didnt show the hard part temoving the piston.

Using clear tap water to do that is a crime. Needs a couple days on the Arizona desert to value the vital resource.

Didn't think rebuild was cost effective any more. I've found reman is cheaper when adding cost of parts AND labor to build.

But why? You can just replace the entire caliper with a new one and at the same time you will get a rebate when you return the core. It might be cheaper to rebuild it but might as well replace it and its the same thing..

Can you still buy rebuild kits for calipers? The only time you need to do this is If it's leaking or sticking. It's a quick hour though.
