Seizing brakes? Here's how to replace a brake caliper on your car.
Using simple, easy to follow instructions and common tools, this video tutorial will demonstrate step by step how to diagnose a sticking brake caliper, remove it from the vehicle, service it and replace it with a rebuilt or new one.
Common symptoms of sticking brake calipers include:
- vibration on the highway
- vibration while braking
- pulsating brake pedal
- car feeling sluggish
- wheel not turning, just dragging
- no brakes on that one wheel
- over heating rotors and wheels after a long drive
- degradation in braking performance
All that's needed for this job is a 14mm socket and ratchet (with an extension pipe) and an 8mm closed end wrench.
This repair was performed on a 2004 Toyota Camry, and should be similar for all front or all wheel drive Toyota's and Lexus models, including the Lexus ES300, ES330, ES350, RX300 RX330 RX350, Toyota Solara, Sienna, Camry, Avalon, Corolla, Matrix, Highlander, Rav4, Corolla iM, Yaris etc with rear disc brakes.
Tips for success:
- soak rusty bolts in penetrating fluid
- use a breaker bar for more leverage
- use clean t-shirts or underwear to wipe up excess brake fluid
- lubricate slider pins and the ends of brake pads
- change the caliper quickly to minimize fluid draining out of the master cylinder
- Anti-seize compound on everything
This job should take 45 min to an hour and can be done at home. Also required is a funnel, some brake fluid (DOT 3) and a helper to pump the brakes.

Great video, many thanks. I was replacing some rear brake pads on my Toyota avensis, when suddenly my bleeder screw got stuck so bad, my spanner took the edges off... bummer. So now purchasing new Caliper. What helped me was seeing you unscrew the bolt to the hose, as I wasn’t sure how that and the small metal tube was assembled and possibly beyond my DIY experience. Now I know what to expect, you’ve made it really easy for me. Once again many thanks. Excellent quality video and narration 👍🏼🙂

shouldn't you replace the rotor to because the heat caused by friction from the seized caliper would have caused warpage on the rotor?
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 6 лет назад
+tawfeeq muhammad yes that would be ideal. However from my diagnostics the rotor only warped when hot, on the highway it vibrates. When cool, the car and brakes drives smooth.

you don't put anti seize on bracket bolt,you put blue loctite to make sure the vibration don't make it to back out!

When i was young i bought cheap cars and changed a few calipers and likely wasted money by replacing them. One can to save money just remove the outer rubber gasket, spray corrosion remover around the brake piston, let it stand a long time to loosen corrosion, then (perhaps start the car for brake servo and) press the brake pedal hard several times until the brake piston falls out by itself. And then one can buy a rebuild rubber set for the caliper and use a drill and a brake honer set to hone up the brake cylinder to get get oxidation and dirt out of there and get smooth cylinder walls again, this can also be done cheap and slow with very fine sandpaper to save money. Clean the brake cylinder and piston from sandpaper dust or perhaps buy a new piston it its that bad.. but just use some fine sandpaper on it and its good to go i bet. Replace the inside piston rubber ring gasket with a new one in the cylinder, and put things together and put on the water preventing rubber ring finally. Here is the way to do this, its shown with a smaller drum brake cylinder but the honer can be adjusted to fit your caliper too. Unless its _really_ stuck this is the way to do it cheap. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qzioBB7KZXU.html You could try to give the brake piston a few whacks if this is not working. And you could use a gas station many ton hydraulic press to move the piston some to loosen it up before you give the caliper up totally. But yeah, if its totally stuck then its time to give up for the ordinary man in the street.. Unless one has a friend and access to a milling machine to grind out the piston carefully without damaging the brake cylinder wall, if one has access to that kind of equipment it might be a cheap way to get that piston out. You could get a milling drillbit set for your hand drill to do it too, but that should be done carefully to not damage the cylinder wall too much. Anyway, if one damage the cylinder wall some it might not be too bad becourse what needs to be good is the part that holds the inner rubber gasket, so a amateur way to do it will actually work if most of the cylinder honing is ok after that kind of grinding the piston out in two halves like a dentist job kind of. Another way that comes to mind is to empty the caliper for brake fluid, heat the brake piston with a blow torch, and cool it down a few times with water, this will also help loose up the corrotion, heat will enlarge any metal and when the piston gets cool it will crack the corrotion so it might be able to be pressed out with the brake pedal. Its 25+ years since i was changing calipers the last time now, but yeah, thats my thoughts on this subject in retrospect thinking of all possibilities i could have done it. Becourse it is many possibilities to do this. For the young ones who wanna save some money on cars and use them on beer instead for parties it might be great knowledge lol :) And dont forget to use caliper piston grease when putting things together.

@speedkar99 4 года назад
Bleeding the brakes have nothing to do with a stuck piston in your caliper.
@kramnull8962
@kramnull8962 4 года назад
I'll say this. Most of the time you won't really know it is a bad caliper until you go through 2 sets of pads very quickly. I noticed the first time that the pads wore quickly, but the piston went back in very easily with a pair of channel locks. Mind you, you don't squeeze the rear pistons into place. You actually turn them and they screw back into place. Mine, did just that, went back into place, but wore another set of pads out within a couple months. This last time though it looked as if the piston was about to totally extend out of the caliper. Looked like the rubber boot was the only thing holding it in. Boot was totally stretched to the max. In other words when the pressure is released from the pedal, the piston is not relaxing to release the brake.

Where did you get your tubing? That's a nice, tight fit unlike the stuff I got at PA.

The only thing I would say is to NEVER use anti-seize on the banjo bolt. It could contaminate the brake fluid
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 6 лет назад
+dm7097 I'd rather flush the fluid knowing my banjo bolt isn't seized to the hose next time I remove...I had to use a breaker to get it off!
@dm7097
@dm7097 6 лет назад
speedkar99 I can see your point but I have lived in the salt belt for my entire life and I have NEVER had to use a breaker bar on any banjo bolt. And I NEVER EVER use anti seize on the threads. I just think the risk is not worth it. As a side note, my newest car is an '05 and the average of my cars is '95. Just my 2 cents worth. 😉
