What. A. Hero. My Santa Fe has had rattling front pads for years. I usually use lots of copper grease but that washes off after a short while. Took the pads off today, bent those tabs in a bit and put everything back together. No rattles. No clonks. No more getting annoyed over rough roads. Thank you very much, from the UK.

Are you sure this is what is causing it? I have a 2023 Pathfinder too and it makes this noise: ru-vid.com5DfVCDicacA?si=HM6ylK44G1Ze3pgb It isn't the brake pads. Dealership can't figure it out. I am preparing the Lemon Law paperwork.

Not a question, but a statement for anyone in a similar situation: I have a 2013 BMW and I just got my rotors turned because my rear brake pads had gone out and my wear sensor had been severed a while ago (without my knowledge). So one of the pads was ruining one of the rotors and I decided to take care of all of them to make sure they were fine. When I was putting my brakes back on it's possible I messed up the clips holding my brakes in place and they're just slightly bent. I was mostly worried about this being a problem for braking but I'm glad it's not too serious and that I can DIY fix this.

I think it's the shims and the lack of grease on the back of the pad. They have a special grease that is included for the back of the pads. If you don't use it (or your installer kept it for himself/herself) then it makes this clunking sound. Also, that grease can dry up and then you get a clunking, too.

I work on Toyota's and most of the brake pads on them come with a little metal clip that goes on the "ears" of the pads that work as a spring and a squealer. It basically pre-loads the pads so they don't move and cause that click, don't know if other manufactures have that but yeah a lot of the time people forget to put them on or lose them by accident during a brake job because they like to fly when you remove them lol

A true backyard mechanic, there must be a dozen or more ways to fix this much better, weld a little to the end of the pad and file it down as needed, add more shim as this is why shims were invented, epoxy behind the existing shim to take up some space, etc.

Not sure this is also an issue, but I purchased new front rotors for my 2003 Lexus ES300. After I installed them, I could hear a click whenever I applied my brakes. Initially, I thought the pads were moving. However, I placed my phone under the car (up on jack stands) and recorded the wheel. It turned out that the stud holes in the rotors were significantly larger than the studs. When the brakes are applied the rotors would stop first and the studs would then click against the rotor stud holes. No amount of lug tightening would get rid of it. Holes were just too big. Parts supplier said rotors are OEM, which I do not believe. Tolerances are not there.

@carquestions 11 месяцев назад
You have a nut torque issue for sure - Mark the hat of the rotor to the rim - if you're right the alignment marks will shift when braking - if not then you have another issue - no way that rim shouldn't clamp the rotor tight - let me know what you find - Cheers from Canada Scott!
@SupramanTRD

That doesn't make much sense. The rotors are clamped tight by the lut nuts when the wheels are installed.

I’m having this same clicking noise issue with my Lexus IS right now. I took the wheel off and the first thing I seen was the wheel studs were not at all centered onto the studs, I took the caliper off and recentered the rotor in the studs, put the caliper and wheel back on and torqued it to spec… still clicks. However, I didn’t check the other side… It is strange that the holes on the rotors don’t center onto the wheel studs .

For starters, I had gone like 3 new rotors and pads and don’t seem to stop the squealing and now every time I break I hear a big click noise by the passenger wheel.
